I wish I could give this book a better rating, because the plot itself is compelling, but the writing is poor. Entire words are left out of sentences, warping the meaning, homonyms are confused ( "new" instead of "knew"), and punctuation is absent in places that, again, warps the meaning of the sentence. The author should have proofread better before publishing this.
Still, the errors didn't detract from the overall plot, so I continued in hopes of getting closure for the story before moving on. The actual story stops rather abruptly somewhere in the 70% range, however, with a short epilogue that offers no satisfactory ending--it answers none of the dangling plot questions, and honestly just feels tacked on.
The worst offense, however, is that the remainder of the "book" is nothing more than advertisements for the author's other works. Yes, that's right... approximately 20% of the book is advertisements. Not a chapter preview of another/next work... but page after page of advertisements for other books, complete with ISBN numbers.
Look, other people may not have a problem with that, but it rather rubs me the wrong way. Aside from the fact that I'm hardly going to waste my time reading this author's other stuff when this book was so poorly executed in terms of its prose and satisfactory plot conclusion (or lack thereof), I expect that when I choose to read a book, at least 90% of it is actually going to be the book--not desperate and rather unwarranted advertising of other authorial works! What could have ended up an average review then became a mere 2 star review!
Finally, I read this book for free. And while I'm glad I didn't spend any money on it, please, if you're perusing the reviews to see if this is worth a shot: Just move on. It isn't worth your time, even if you can read it for free, as I did.
Dead on the Water: Abandon Ship is a well crafted Sci-Fi Fantasy Horror. And I would imagine that fans of this genre will love sinking their teeth into this one! I have read this author several times before and must say I’m always very impressed.
The story had every element a good story should have. An exciting plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s an abundance of well illustrated scenes that really make you feel like you are right there in the story, and that's something I really look for in a good book.
Thanks to a sick, twisted scientist in Belize, a terrible thing has found its way about the ship. It is about to take over everyone and everything, and neither the captain, his crew, or any passenger on board will be immune. Welcome to Dead on the Water, a trembling good tale by RWK Clark. I personally was most entertained by the part where the captain, who is now the leader of the zombie movement, addresses all of his troops on the deck of the ship, relating his plan to them. Just picturing the situation and feeling the despair of it was enough to make me say, “I love it! Bring on more!”
This captivating and commendable work had me immersed from the beginning. The story flows from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional skill when it comes to storytelling. There are twists and turns in this page turner that will take the reader on a gripping journey!
It’s one of those stories that come along once in awhile that makes you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader!
I’ll certainly be looking forward to reading more from RWK Clark in the future! I would definitely recommend this book. I’d give this 6 stars if I could. Unfortunately, I can only give it a mere 5!
I don't really know what to think of this book....
I had high hopes for this book when I found it. The description was really interesting and it grabbed my attention right away. But when I started reading this book I was extremely disappointed. The writing style was lacking and it seemed forced and unedited. It would randomly jump from character to character. Some stuff was left open, like what happened to the dog or the rats in the dumpster? None of that was answered. The zombies were odd. Being undead but still able to communicate with the living didn't make a lot of sense. Kudos to the author for creating his own version of zombies but it didn't really seem like they were very well thought out.
First off, I LOVE movies and books that are able to captivate you and do not have a main character or an obvious going to live or win character? I LOVE the synopsis of this story, what I didn't like about this story was that the 'reanimated ' could talk, plan, follow orders, etc. what I disliked about this book is also what I liked because it wasn't your typical slow walking, dull undead. These bastards talked and worked together like a team LOL. This was my first read by RWK Clark but definitely not my last! 👏🏿
This takes zombies to another level was routing for the people on land and on board ship how things can change in such a short time really enjoyed the book Mr Clarke certainly knows how to draw you into the book felt so real and the end was the end !!
I'm not rating this simply because I didn't read the whole thing. I only read the sample given to me for free on Kindle. Often times that's plenty to get me invested in the story. This one didn't even get to the zombies or anything remotely close to the zombies. The characters were also really flat. Maybe they were going to have a revelation and become better people or more dynamic as the story goes on. I guess it's not fair of me to judge at this point. But there was literally nothing about what I read that made me want to keep going.
This book was better than I expected. I really enjoyed it. Good character development, a beginning a middle and an end which unfortunately a lot of books I’ve read lately are missing one of the other of. Definitely would recommend this, it’s a fun read. It’s pretty scary too.
The claustrophobic feeling is so palpable I could hardly breathe on some parts. Interesting take on what caused the zombies, is there another story about Dr Anson and his research. Either out or coming out. Thank you.
