The first essay by Daniel Calder is by far the longest and is immediately reminiscent of Eric G Stanley's Imagining The Anglo Saxon Past. Calder traces and comments on the history of past investigations into the style of Old English Poetry in much the same way that Stanley investigated Anglo Saxon paganism.

The rest of the book is taken up by essays from Eric G Stanley, Stanley B Greenfield and Fred C Robinson. Each essay explores theories of style from a linguistic to editorial perspective.
