I have a real fascination with working dogs, whether it be search and rescue, cadaver dogs or drug detection. Margaret Mizushima has created a great series dealing with Robo, a German Shepherd assigned to a Colorado town’s police force and his handler, Mattie.

Her books are always fast paced, strong from the get go. This series works best if you start at the beginning, as Mattie’s history, the team dynamics and romantic relationship with Cole play an important part in the story.

The relationship between Mattie and Robo is particularly well done and always rings true.

This story involves the discovery of a partially burned body up on the mountain. And unfortunately, Mattie knows the victim. Additional bodies are found and Mattie becomes a target of the killer.

This is a great series for those that like police procedurals, even more so if you’re a dog nut like I am.

My thanks to netgalley and Crooked Lane Books for an advance copy of this novel.

Sensational, emotional, and riveting!

She followed her dog through the trees for another fifty yards, the odor thickening as she traveled. The air grew heavy with the stink of rotting flesh. Robo picked up speed, dashing down into a hollow and then slowing. He pinned his ears, slinking up to a mound of dirt and debris.
Mattie raced to catch up. By the time she reached him, Robo had sat down and was waiting for her. His mouth opened in a pant, and he wore a smug expression as though quite satisfied with himself.
She squatted beside him and hugged him close, giving him lots of praise and pats for doing such a remarkable job. Since the stench was so bad, she wondered if this had been his destination all along, and he’d shown her the fire ring just for kicks.

“Here’s the big prize,” she said to Brody.
A shallow grave that had been ravaged by predators lay before them, putting on a partial display of its contents. Mattie’s stomach clenched as she took in the sight.

Burning Ridge is the fourth book in the Timber Creek K-9 Mystery with a twisty, emotional, and terrifying storyline that had me glued to the pages!

The characters in this series have become like family. It's rare for me to get emotional when events happen to characters in the novels I frequently read. That said, I discovered that certain events, good or bad, happen to the characters in this series, I'm not entirely immune to the emotional impact taking place.

I'm very sad to have come to the final story of Mattie and Robo, at least for now, but it's my hope that Margaret will be continuing to write more stories in the Timber Creek Mystery series and that the next installment will come out soon!
This is one of my favorite book series!

With Thanks to NetGalley, Crooked Lane Books, and Margaret Mizushima for giving me this advanced copy to read in return for my honest review.

The grim memories of the past seem to weigh heavy and the light rays of the present can't diminish what is served up now in abundance.

Officer Mattie Cobb and her K-9 partner, Robo, just have to deal. It's part of the job. Take it or leave it. No matter the jaw-dropping beauty of Colorado's Redstone Ridge near Timber Creek, Mattie knows full well that the human kind leave their venomous tracks blatantly in life. Crime seeps in even in the lush scenery of nature's finest landscapes.

But someone will no longer be leaving footprints in the dirt ever again. While on horseback with his daughters along the trail ridge, local veterinarian Cole Walker comes upon a gruesome sight.....a foot inside a lone boot laying in the grass....... no longer attached to its former occupant. He hurries the girls down to safety and calls the police.

Mattie and Robo search the area and Robo alerts them to the rest of the body burned beyond recognition. Someone wants to lean heavy on silence from the grave. But as the crime lab initiates their investigation, Mattie will have an unexpected link to this victim of foul play. And, once again, the past will take a seat up close and personal.

Burning Ridge is the fourth edition to this series by Margaret Mizushima. I read Hunting Hour and really enjoyed it. Each of the books reads as a standalone as Mizushima fills the readers in with enough details to fill in any gaps. Don't be fooled by the "doggie" on the cover. Mizushima doesn't deal in "cozy". The crimes reflect the real crimes found in today's world and her characters are reflective of people just trying to stay above the fray.

There is a definite bond between Mattie and Robo in which Mizushima crafts well. Sometimes it's the four-legged variety that picks up on emotions far better than the two-legged counterparts. With all trauma in life, trust is simply at the core. You'll view this fragile thread throughout the book within Mattie as well as lesser characters within these pages. And in the midst of glaring reality, just who is it that provides the soft spot for us to land?

I received a copy of Burning Ridge through Crooked Lane Books. My thanks to them and to Margaret Mizushima for the opportunity.

Mattie Cobb and her partner, K-9 officer Robo, are part of the police force in Timber Creek, CO. When the local vet and his daughters discover partial human remains while horseback riding on a nearby ridge, Mattie responds to the scene with Robo. Finding charred remains of a body in a burn pit, Mattie is soon on the trail of a brutal killer. The case becomes quite complex, revealing secrets about Mattie's own life that she has tried to hide.

Wow! This book totally sucked me right into the story from the very start. Burning Ridge is the 4th book in the Timber Creek K-9 series, but I was easily able to jump right in and enjoy the story, the setting and the characters. I'm definitely back-tracking to the start of this series though. I enjoyed this book so much I need to read them all!

Mattie is a strong character and her bond with Robo is awesome, but realistic. The supporting characters (like the local vet love interest, his daughters, a new teenager in town, her foster mom) are all well-developed and give the story weight and atmosphere. I liked how the author wove the murder case in with Mattie's own horrible childhood experiences. It gave the plot a nice complexity. The story moved along at a fast pace, building suspense throughout with twists and multiple suspects. The ending was well done. I didn't want this story to end -- but, I have three prior books in the series to enjoy now!

I will definitely continue reading this series. Can't wait for the next book!!

Ah that was a satisfying read! It was so good to catch up with Deputy Mattie Cobb and her K-9 partner Robo. We learn a lot more about Mattie’s background in this book. Of course there is murder involved but this time it Mattie’s past that comes back to haunt her and the town of Timber Creek. But it is vet Cole Walker, a friend of Mattie’s who fancies the hell out of her, who finds the first sign of it on a leisurely trail ride with his daughters. Their dog finds a partially burned boot. With a foot in it.

The body is soon found and it turns out to be Mattie’s long lost brother, William, whom she lost touch with as they went into separate foster home in childhood. Mattie is understandably devastated. She hadn’t seen her brother for many years. He had recently contacted her wanting to re-connect but she delayed, needing time to process uncomfortable childhood memories that had just been stirred up.

When the police investigate the crime scene, further shallow depressions with greener grass are found and eventually more bodies, much older, are recovered. But police soon come up against a brick wall in their investigation. Mattie is determined to bring William’s murderer to justice but before she can do that she must fight for her own life after she is targeted by the killer.

The slowish start didn’t feel slow as we got absorbed into Mattie’s world again. She and Robo are such wonderful characters, as is the rest of the cast. Sometimes I look at my own dog and wonder if she would be as protective as Robo is of Mattie. She is certainly as affectionate! In the time of the plague, I am enjoying getting up to date with the series I have been following featuring working dogs. Sammy is more of a sleeping dog but that’s fine. She sometimes warms up my side of the bed 😁.

Burning Ride is the second book I've read in the Timber Creek K-9 Mystery series. And, I just have to face the fact that this series isn't for me. And, it all boils down to the fact that I'm just the wrong reader. It's a bit frustrating when a book has everything I usually like, a small town with a main character with a traumatic past. And, of course, a dog. Who doesn't like dogs? Yet, I feel no connection with the story nor the characters. It's so bland. And, that's just my opinion. I'm sure others love this series and I get it. I wish I did. Instead, I feel during the progress of this book that it just lulls along at a slow pace and that I'm not truly engaged in the story.

Now, this all sounds pretty negative. However, this is just me. If you like crime stories, set in small towns and if you are a dog lover. Then, I don't see why this series won't work for you. It's not all bad, you know. I did want to know the ending of the book and it was an interesting ending.

I want to thank the publisher for providing me with a free copy through NetGalley for an honest review!

Mattie Cobb and her K-9 partner, Robo, are called to work the case of a burned body found in the wilderness. As Mattie and other officers search for evidence, they also discover three additional bodies. To complicate matters, Mattie soon discovers she has a connection to the burned dead man.

The fourth book in the Timber Creek K-9 Mystery series by Margaret Mizushima. I have not read any of the other books in this series, but Burning Ridge is easily read as a standalone.

Mattie works as a police officer in a small town. She is a hard-working officer, and close to the local community. With a good heart, Mattie wants to help those she believes to need a little more in their lives, but she is also cautious and wary of strangers and new developments in town. As a bonus, she is seeing the charming local veterinarian, Cole.

A solid mystery. Realistic characters. Plenty of action, and a little romance. A lighter, less graphic crime fiction read. Engaging and suspenseful.

I received an ARC of this book from Crooked Lane Books in exchange for an honest review.

This series set in Colorado, and the setting is another magnificent character in the series. There's more depth to the characters as we learn more about them, and watching Robo solve crime after crime never gets old. I never read and don't enjoy romance novels, and so the budding relationship between protagonist Mattie Cobb and the veterinarian Cole Walker is a concern to me. I hope this doesn't turn into a romance/relationship series after all. Cole seems to be thinking about marriage.

This series just keeps getting better. Maybe it's because after four books these characters feel like people you know, and when things happen to them it really tugs on the emotions.

Mattie and Robo are just awesome together; both as work partners and as a dog and his human. In this book we learn a little more about Mattie's past, which ends up opening even more questions about her future. I'm not going to spoil any of the story, so that's all I can say.

This book moved at a terrific pace and kept me riveted to the story the entire time. A lot of authors could take note from Ms. Mizushima -- sometimes less is more, and you don't need to drag a book out to 400 pages with unnecessary filler when you have a compelling storyline and interesting characters!

I really enjoy this series and can't wait to see what kind of case Mattie and Robo get themselves involved in in the next book!

I read this book in the Timber Creek K-9 series in 2018, but I had not read all the earlier books in the series. With a new book coming out in November 2019, I decided it was the perfect time to backtrack and read the books in order from the beginning. I'm so glad I did! I loved this book the first time, but enjoyed it even more the second time!

I listened to the audio book version this time. Narrated by Nancy Wu, the audio is just short of 10 hours long. Wu gives a wonderful performance, reading at a nice pace and bringing the characters to life. I have enjoyed Wu's narration in all the books in this series. I'm definitely going to look for other books she has recorded. She always gives a top notch performance.

I love this series! The characters are realistic. I like the setting and the suspenseful plots. Now that I've listened to all the prior books, I can now jump into my review copy of the next book, Tracking Game!

Although a reader could read this series out of order like I did originally, I did enjoy this fourth book in the series even more after learning more about the characters, their established relationships and their past cases.

I’m hooked. I can’t seem to get enough of this mystery series with a police procedural vibe. Once again, someone is playing havoc in the mountains of Colorado but this time it is directly linked to Mattie.

Dr. Cole Walker, the local veterinarian, has deep feelings for her and no where does it show more than Burning Ridge. Up to this point, he has been gently pushing a relationship with Mattie. He knows she is a very private person and is working through some matters. But when someone kidnaps her, Cole and Robo -Mattie’s K-9 partner- are two forces not to be messed with. How they worked together was very interesting.

I just read on the author’s website that each mystery is a standalone but to appreciate the stories with the maximum effect (characters, both new and old, and changing relationships) you should read the series in order.

I couldn’t agree more.

When it comes down to a choice between a cat or a dog - either in a book or for real - gimme the cat every time, yo. But that doesn't mean I don't like canines, and for sure I'm a big fan of stories set in the wild and woolly outdoors (as evidenced by my undying love of books by writers like C.J. Box and Paul Doiron). And, of course, this one.

This book is the fourth in the series, and for sure it won't be my last. I read and enjoyed the third, Hunting Hour, but sadly not the first two. I choose the word sadly not because the books I did read don't stand alone quite well - they do - but simply because they're so entertaining and easy to read that I wish I'd started at the beginning. The heroine, police officer Mattie Cobb, is a strong (not to be confused with headstrong), competent woman with whom I'd be happy to share a beer or two. She's not overly nosy, whiny or self-doubting like many of the cop ladies ladies I've encountered (well, she's got a bit too much of the latter characteristic to suit me perfectly, but her abusive childhood - much of which she can't even remember - means I'll give her a pass on that score for now).

The setting here is scenic and relatively remote Timber Creek, Colorado, where Mattie is apprehensively awaiting a meet-up with her brother Willie. Separated 25 years ago and reared in different foster homes, the two have been in touch only a few times since and Mattie has no idea what to expect. She absolutely loves her K-9 partner Robo, and she's close to acknowledging her love of local veterinarian Cole Walker as well (understandable - I, too, am very fond of them both).

One day, on a horseback ride with his two young daughters, Cole's dog finds a treasure to haul back to his humans. A dead animal it's not; rather, it's what's left of a badly burned human foot and ankle that's still stuck in its charred boot. A subsequent search led by Robo turns up the rest of the body deep in the woods; evidence unearths a surprising connection to Mattie. Still other clues lead to still other searches and the discovery of more charred-beyond-recognition bodies.

Clearly, whatever's going on has been happening for quite a few years, so now it's a search for connections among the victims (and more to the point, to Mattie) and ultimately to the identity of someone who may be a serial killer. The trail leads over the rivers and through the woods, with some tense moments scattered hither and yon. The ending calls into question some of Mattie's family history - bringing, I'm sure, a big surprise to loyal readers of this series (and, no doubt, providing a solid start to the next edition). I'm up for it - and I thank the publisher, via NetGalley, for the opportunity to stay in the series loop. Good job!

A good mystery and I really enjoyed the K-9 officer Mattie Cobb and her K9 Robo as the lead characters in this story. This is the fourth in the series of Timber Creek mysteries, but the first I've read. It seems easily read as a stand-alone to me - I didn't feel like I was really missing anything.

Robo and Mattie uncover a burned body in a fire pit and the investigation turns very interesting. The action gets going and things get really scary for Mattie and Robo. There were some surprising developments.

The plot was interesting and the characters are good. Mattie's backstory is really sad and I felt really bad for her. Loved her boyfriend Cole - he seems like such a great guy and is the town vet.

Thanks to Margaret Mizushima and Crooked Lane Books through Netgalley for an advance copy.

4.5 stars: I am almost caught up with this K-9 series and have enjoyed it very much. This book is a great addition to the series. It starts off with Cole Walker, local vet and Mattie's "boyfriend" is out riding with his daughters. Their dog comes running with a stick, at least that is what they thought it was until he came closer. It was a boot, with a foot inside it. They hurry home and Cole calls the police. Mattie and Robo are called in to see what they can find. What they find is a body that looks like it was burned, but before or after death is the question. As the crime lab and coroner investigate, it ends up that Mattie will have an unexpected link to this victim of foul play.

Mattie and Robo have an amazing bond, as partners, as companions and as family. Robo knows when something is wrong with Mattie and vice versa. Robo has so many skills. He is not a cadaver dog, but can find dead bodies, he can scent an area and recognize the scent later, he is also a search and rescue dog, so is often called on by the police for investigations, which means Mattie also gets involved. Sometimes that involvement puts her in danger. Once again the supporting characters add much to the story. Maddie has taken a local teen under her wing when she finds out that her father is often away and she is alone a lot. Does she and her father have anything to do with the murder? There are a few suspects in this case, but motive is a question that needs to be solved. Mattie and Cole are becoming closer in this story, and when she is in danger, nothing will keep Cole out of the investigation. The story moved along at a fast pace, building suspense throughout with twists and multiple suspects. The plot had enough complexity to keep readers invested until the satisfactory ending. I will definitely continue reading this series and whole heartily recommend it.

In Timber Creek, Colorado, Veterinarian Cole Walker takes his daughters on a horseback ride along the upward trails to show them mountain sheep. Unfortunately, their dog finds a burned boot with a human foot still in it. Deputy Mattie Cobb and her K-9 German Shepherd Robo search for the body and help find more skeletons in an unmarked grave. Mattie is also dealing with personal issues as she has recently been talking to her brother Willie who she was separated from 25 years ago.

As a dog lover, I adore this series. Robo is in most of the scenes and he's always the hero. The series has a gentle romance heating up between Cole and Mattie. There's no rough language, just a great mystery in each book. I like every one of the recurring characters. I've now read all 4 in the series and I'm ready for book #5, Tracking Game, which comes out in November 2019.

Fourth in the Timber Creek K-9 Mystery series, this is the most compelling, even if the most horrifying, to date. The characters are 3D, and we continue to learn more about Mattie, a complex young woman. I enjoy seeing how close the bond is that Mattie has with her K-9 partner, Robo, and how completely they trust each other. The setting, where Mattie is a life-long long resident, can be almost visualized, and the mystery is written well.
Deputy Mattie Cobb has not seen her brother Willie for 25 years, since her father beat her mother badly enough that she was hospitalized. Mattie was 6 years old and had called 911; Willie was 8. Her father went to prison and her mother abandoned both children, who went to separate foster homes. When Willie, an addict in recovery, contacted her 7 months ago, Mattie remembered the repressed years of repeated abuse. They plan to meet in a month, in Las Vegas, about halfway between where each lives.
Cole Walker is the local veterinarian and the man Mattie has been seriously dating. He and his daughters are horseback riding on nearby trails when one of their dogs finds a burned boot holding the grisly charred remains of a human foot. Cole leads men from the Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Sheriff’s Department, including Mattie and Robo, to where his dog was first seen with the boot. What they find there is most chilling, and the resulting case leads to horrible discoveries. The more they investigate, the clearer it is that Mattie and Robo are in the crosshairs of at least one vicious killer who has been operating in the area for decades.
I like Mattie, especially as I learn more about various life events. The woman she has become is amazing and is well-defined through realistic conversations and actions. The way she seeks resources for her teenage friend, Riley, and others, shows her love and concern. Her friends Stella, foster mother Mama T, and boyfriend Cole and his daughters are also described very well as befits their roles. Learning more about the unique partnership between human and K-9 is fascinating.
No. Way. Just…No. That is what I mumbled several times throughout this novel. I like how the author builds the mystery, step by step, including multiple suspects. The author also has put together a great working team and a set of friends who love Mattie more than she understands. While this is 4th in the series, it can be read as a standalone or in order of the series. The author does a fabulous job of giving sufficient information about the characters to appreciate this novel, yet Mattie’s life has not been problem-free, and we learn much about her journey in the earlier mysteries. This mystery is complex, and intensely stunning as the crimes of past and present converge. I like watching Mattie and Robo interact as partners and friends; I also like how some of the commands and workings of the K-9 relationship are explained for the reader to understand. I watched as each suspect is questioned, studied, and released, and was a bit sad when my “pet” suspects were freed. The real bad guys were barely on my radar. That surprise, coupled with the resolution of all open situations, makes for a story that is hard to put down. I highly recommend this cozy mystery to those who enjoy well-written novels with a complex mystery and law enforcement officers with K-9 partners.
From a grateful heart: I received a copy of this e-Arc from the publisher through NetGalley, and this is my honest review.

I declare Burning Ridge: A Timber Creek K-9 Mystery (Timber Creek K-9 Mystery #4)
by Margaret Mizushima
a great read!

This is my 4th book by the author, and although I don’t know how to describe the books I can say

• The books are like a cozy, but not really – enjoyable simplicity
• The books are not extremely descriptive, but the reader gets all they need to form opinions, likes and dislikes about characters, and situations.
• Many returning characters from earlier books
• The books convey an overall positive feeling, even when terrible things are happening within the story, the energy returns to a feel good, everything will work out feeling
• Robo is the type of animal to make an owner or handler proud
• Violence is alluded to vs. descriptively presented
• Friendship and respect seem to be important fundamentals in the background of the stories.
• Mattie is a strong female lead character but is not arrogant. She has no problem also showing her softer, insecure side when necessary.
• There was some excitement, action, tense moments, and feelings woven into the story.
• The books would be good “Hallmark” TV series

Ideas that may resurface in future books:
• The ongoing relationship between Cole and Mattie
• Mattie’s birth parent’s – this is not really important to the series, but the way this book ended it could be a thread that comes back in the future.

For me, this series and the author just leave me feeling good at the end of the books.

The expected publication date is Sept 11, 2018. As with the earlier books in the series, I expect it will be available in all formats.

I wish to thank the publisher Crooked Lane Books, the Author and NetGalley for the advanced reader’s copy for an honest review.

For me, this was a 5 out of 5-star review

What can I say? I'm wildly in love with Robo!! I'm fascinated by his heroic searches. This is absolutely a five star read when it comes to anything and everything Robo. The human interactions? More like a three and a half star read. There were some things that didn't ring true for me.

But then there's Robo. For as long as this series continues on, I will be reading it, and loving it, because of Robo! 💜

Burning Ridge by Margaret Mizushima is the 4th instalment in the Timber Creek K-9 Mystery but can be totally read as a standalone. I'm glad that I got the opportunity to read this book as it was a really good read with a nice plotline and honest characterization. I enjoyed the story on the whole and didn't feel like I was missing out on anything significantly even though I'm new to this series, and now I'm looking forward to exploring the prequels and the sequels to this part.

The two things that I liked best in this book were the plot and the characterization - the plot was intense, yet not over-the-top complex and the characterization was simply but realistic and I was able to feel a connection to both the story as well as all the main characters, especially the leading lady Mattie and her GSD, Robo.

The writing was simple and clean and the book had a moderate pacing which complimented the story well. The tension was also moderate, though it spiked up enough wherever needed to make it a very engaging read. Overall, I felt that this book is a complete package and I think that based on this book I can already see this series becoming a nice thirst quencher for mystery-ravenous readers.

I'd recommend this book to all the readers of mystery, suspense and light thriller genres, especially those who are looking for a new detective series to explore.

I really like this series and am excited to see new books being added, which I hope continues :) I like MC Mattie a lot, especially because she's overcome so much in her life. Her relationship with Robo, the police canine she works with, is amazing, and it goes both ways. Mattie has mostly good people around her, giving her the support network she needs when life occasionally knocks her down.

It didn't take long for a body to turn up, but it did take a while to identify it, and then it became personal. As the investigation proceeds, more bodies are discovered, and it's up to the sheriff's department to figure out if - and how - they're all connected. There are several suspects, some of them more unlikely than others but none with obvious motives. Thanks to red herrings and several twists and turns in the story, I didn't identify the culprit until it became obvious. Even then, I couldn't work out a motive until that was explained as well.

The next book in this series is in my audio library, and I hope to listen to it relatively soon, as this is becoming one of my favorite non-cozy series.

This book has been calling me to read it as I had read the earlier books. I started it last night and finished it. It is the fourth installment of the Timber Creek K-9 series. Robo is brilliant. He has never track a person without a scent article and is able to do it. He finds the charred body in a fire pit. Maggie Cobb and Cole Walker's affair continues. We learned more about Maggie's childhood. This book is full of surprises and suspense. You will more of a K-9 dog works in this book.
Cole is taking his children to see the mountain sheep in the high country of Colorado. His dog, Brunco brings back a charred boot with the remains of a foot in it. Maggie and Robo searched the area looking for the rest of the body. The tale takes a couple of turns that will keep you awake until you finished. The ending left me wanting to read more. If you want to learn how K-9 works this is a good book to read. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK and series.

Mattie and Robo are back. I LOVE these books. Margaret Mizushima is a great author and the narrator for this series is perfect.
Book 4 starts off busy and it doesn’t stop. I love the relationship between Mattie and her K9 Robo. Robo is the perfect search dog and he clearly loves his partner. Dogs always have a hold of my heart so this series was the perfect books to stumble upon.

Deputy Mattie Cobb's fourth case hits close to home. When Cole Walker and his daughters discover a burned boot with foot still inside, Mattie and her K9 partner Robo are called in to see if Robo can find the rest of the body.

Meanwhile, Mattie is considering meeting with her brother who was raised in a separate foster home after their dad was sent to prison for abusing his wife and kids and their mom disappeared. They haven't seen each other since they were children but Willie called recently to try to make amends as part of is treatment for drug addiction. Talking with her brother brought back repressed memories of her childhood that have sent Mattie to therapy and make her feel like she shouldn't connect to other people. This puts her growing relationship with Cole in jeopardy.

Mattie is also developing a relationship with Riley Flynn. She and her father have recently moved to town and, with her father working two jobs, Riley is lonely. Mattie met her when doing a school safety visit. She wants to find a way to help Riley connect with the community and make friends.

When the body turns out to be Mattie's brother Willie, the investigation gets more complicated. She knows he wouldn't have voluntarily returned to Timber Creek from California because of all the bad memories. Mattie and the rest of law enforcement are looking for California connections and trying to figure out how and why Willie got back. There are quite a few suspects. Among them are Tucker York who works for Colorado Parks and Wildlife and was in the area because a plan is in place to move part of the herd of Bighorn Sheep to a new location. Bret Flynn, Riley's dad, is also a suspect because he is behaving suspiciously.

This story was exciting and suspense filled. I really like how Mattie grows and changes in this story and how she has grown over the course of the four books so far. I like her growing relationship with Cole and his daughters. I really like her relationship with her dog Robo who is clearly her best friend.

This is the fourth in the Timber Creek K-9 series featuring Mattie Cobb and her K-9 partner Robo, but you absolutely don’t need to have read the others to dive right in here. While references are made to events which were obviously detailed in past books, there is little which seems to outright affect the plot of this one, apart from Mattie already having a relationship with Cole, the local vet.

It’s Cole who, when out on a trail ride with his daughters, makes a grisly discovery of human remains up in a lonely spot in the mountains, and Mattie and Robo are then called in to assist with investigating the crime. Things very quickly become personal, and when more bodies are found, it appears evident that someone is more than willing to cross unthinkable lines in pursuit of their goals. A personal connection puts Mattie and Robo squarely in the killer’s crosshairs.

I really enjoyed the relationships between the characters in this story; Mattie’s friendship with the lonely teenage girl who latches onto her was a favourite part and I’d enjoy seeing more of Riley in future books. As a romance reader, I’d have wished for a little more than just talk between Mattie and Cole, however.

The author has extensive experience with veterinary medicine and lives in Colorado, and this shines through in the story, a firm bedrock of knowledge. The police investigation felt real and there were plenty of red herrings to keep the reader from figuring out who the culprit was until it was time for the big reveal (though naggingly, a couple of plot points weren’t neatly tied off). The only other thing which bothered me was the apparent speed with which people loaded horses up, transported them around and then had them ready for long mountain rides. I have extensive experience with horses myself, and things never seemed to happen at quite that speed.

Four stars for an engaging, realistic story with well-written characters, but I have to knock one off for those untied loose ends and what was really a romance in name only.

This book #4 in the Timber Creek K-9 Mystery series. I have the same complaints with each of her books. I won't list them here since they're in my other reviews of this series. But I added an extra star for this one.

I liked the creativity in this story line and I was pulled in early on. I had no clue who the perp was. The author also juggled a few different threads in this one. They eventually all came together at the end. So 3 stars.

An excellent K-9 mystery!

Deputy Maddie Cobb and her K-9, Robo work together with local law enforcement and the FBI to determine the killer after a burned body is found in the mountains. This is the 4th in the series and the characters are evolving. I love the scenes between Maddie and Robo.

What I enjoy about this series is that the balance between character development and a really well-built mystery. They are a delight to read!!
