Hiding in Plain Sight: A Glimpse Into the Reality of Domestic Violence
Hiding in Plain Sight by Sarah Gallardo depicts a real and chilling portrayal of how domestic violence does not discriminate and manifests itself in the most unexpected ways and places. This true story provides an authentic depiction of one woman’s journey through DV and its devastating emotional, physical, mental and spiritual effects on an individual. Beyond the negative experience that this woman endures through this disgusting act of human cruelty, through the tears, anger, cuts and bruises, this woman demonstrates the power of hope through her heroic courage and strength to come out on the other side. Instead of succumbing to a life of anger, defeat and lack of self-confidence, Ms. Gallardo demonstrates her leadership, her dedication to combatting the DV epidemic and the ability to empower other victims of this horrible crime to speak up- loud and proud. Beyond the wonderful non-profit organization Sarah has created called “Sarah Speaks Up”, she has created a following- a tribe- of others who gravitate to her bravery through telling this story of hiding in plain sight. This story will serve as a guiding light to many – whether they are able and willing to share their story or suffering in silence. It is a story of hope, survival and true human bravery with extraordinary leadership and resilience at its core. ~ Morgan Ferrarotti

A powerful and moving story that sheds truth and light on a hidden reality. I am thankful for the knowledge it provides and hope others can find strength and support from it.

We all get those suggested pages to follow on social media. Sarah’s organization, SarahSpeaksUp, showed on my feed. I clicked on it, and then I reached out to her because she’s a survivor and advocate. I wanted to share my novel with her.
She asked me to read her book, and I agreed. I had many reasons to, but one was that we’re the same age, having graduated High School the same year. Something intrigued me about that. Our life experiences would be so similar in some aspects, but painfully different in others. I don’t know her, but it’s a connection that makes her story seem more relevant to me.
The book is written well, and it gives insight into domestic violence as promised, but what I appreciated most was how Sarah explains the difficulties of escape. I’ve read about narcissistic behavior, gaslighting, and other aspects of these relationships, but understanding the concepts isn’t the same as reading a longer account from someone who lived it.
There’s a powerful statement in the foreword: “Women need others who can speak up to speak up…not only for themselves, but for those that must remain silent.”
I’m thankful that Sarah survived and is able to share her story. The rest of us need to listen to people like her, because so many more are suffering all around us, and they desperately need us to see. This book has opened my eyes—and my heart—a little wider.

Once I picked this book up I couldn’t put it down. I had to read Sarah’s story through to completion. In fact I read it in one sitting. This is a harrowing, moving tale of triumph against horrifying circumstances. This is also so much more.
This book is also a valuable resource for anyone and everyone. The latter half is dedicated to education. How to recognize different forms of abuse and where people can go to receive help. Sarah took her personal experience and chose to create something that could help others.
Highly recommend. Read it and then pass it along to someone else. Who knows who you might help.

Willing to make a relationship work at all costs, victims overlook red flags until it's too late. As people pleasers, they try to fix their abuser. But in reality, they can only fix themselves by leaving or escaping. A network of support is critical transitioning a victim to survivor.

Intense. Quick read. Does a nice job of defining lots of types of abuse at the end which is valuable.
