December i Kymlinge.

The Darkest Day – Another Classic from the Swedish Master

The Darkest Day, is the latest twisted thriller from the Swedish Noir Master, Håkan Nesser and once again he proves to at the top of his genre. This is a multi-layered thriller that touches subjects of mental health and close family relationships and things are not often what they seem.

Karl-Erik and his wife Rosemarie Hermansson have recently retired from teaching and Karl-Erik, a dominant and overbearing husband has decided that in the sp

(I read this book in Danish, but I'm reviewing in English. The book is available in English, but not listed on Goodreads yet. See nesser.se for the names of the English version of the Barbarotti series.)

I did not expect to start a 458-page book on a Friday evening and finish it on a Sunday morning. By the time I was about 25% of the way through the book, I was hooked and just wanted to sit and read it straight to the end. I credit Nesser's style of writing for all that. I look forward to the nex

Wow - What happened here? After finishing several other thriller series, I was so looking forward to being able to start with the Barbarotti series. On top - a scandinavian author.. Wasn't he a bestseller? Could it become any better? Probably not - but I hadn't taken into account it could become a whole lot worse than my expectations and hopes aswell.

Briefly: the first 50 pages are that boring that I wanted to give up. Literally nothing happens, only a stereotypical description of a whole set o

Dlaczego 5 gwiazdek?
- bo Barbarotti rozmawia z Bogiem i prowadzi z nim grę, w której czasami Bóg jest pod kreską;
- bo Bóg ma wybitne poczucie humoru;
- bo rodzina, która pada ofiarą podwójnego zaginięcia jest zdrowo popieprzona i nie lubimy nikogo;

Ganz fürchterlich, was Handlung, Erzählweise und Sprache betrifft.

Som vanli ...more

Vahva suositus!

To fans of Nordic noir, Hakan Nesser needs no introduction. As a crime author he is right up there with the very best. The Darkest Day scored as well as the top books that I finished in 2017, and was the last one, taking my total to 130 on the last day of an excellent year for reading.

The story is based in the small Swediah town of Kymlinge where the Hermansson family have gathered to celebrate father Karl-Erik and daughter Ebba's 65th and 40th birthdays respectively. The family is overshadowed

A family anniversery ends with the disappearance of Robert and Hendrik, uncle and nephew, but they disappear at different times. Is it related, where are they, why isn't there any signal or sign where they are? By coincidence they find Robert, in a freezer with another body, but not Hendrik. What is wrong in this family? The investigation isn't advancing and it takes a year before there is a new lead.
This is a very slow book with hardly any action. Not Hakan Nesser's best book.

I first came upon Nesser a couple of years ago. I read the first seven books in the Van Veeteren series, which are all that are in print from his US publisher. During a Welsh vacation I found the three remaining books in the series, plus two additional stand alone books.

One a recent business trip to London I found The Darkest Day, the first book in the Barbarotti series.

There is one thing the UK has over the US.

The Darkest Day (The Barbarotti Series Book 1) by Håkan Nesser and Sarah Death...
The Darkest Day is the first novel in the five part Inspector Barbarotti series from renowned Swedish crime author Håkan Nesser.
Waited for years for a translation of this series to finally pop up!

After the Van Veteran series, books and tv series, this first of five is a very, very peculiar and different read! Takes ages to get going as the reader is introduced to a rather dysfunctional family and their children and

My first book by Hakan Nesser and thoroughly enjoyed it. It does not have the standard structure of crime fiction, which makes it interesting. You usually get a few pages intro, there’s a death, the agent of investigation (not always a police officer) arrives, the investigation, possibly more murders, then the resolution. Not so here. I won’t say what there is as it’s half the enjoyment - finding out for ones self. Recommended, and I will read more of Nesser.

For my take on the growth of crime f

I like the setup with a case involving two missing people from the same family, with interesting dynamics and where nothing is what it appears to be. However, the plot is slow going and the same content could easily have been covered in half the number of pages. The main character, Barbarotti, is interesting but I much prefer Inspector Van Veeteren from Nesser's other series. Overall an ok read but far from the best by the author.

This is quite an interesting detective novel as it isn't so much a 'who done it' as it is about the question of how it actually unfolds. I really liked many of the characters. Barbarotti is a very promising lead character, Kristofer is interesting and the two sisters, although not likeable, create an interesting story. How do you actually react when two people of your family disappear? How strong can we be?
