Too Many Crooks Spoil the Plot by Sarah Osborne is the first book in the newA Ditie Brown Mystery series. Now from the cover and title of this book I was going into this one expecting a lighthearted fun cozy read but unfortunately that wasn't the case with this one which is the reason I dropped my rating to 2.5 stars.

The story begins withMabel Aphrodite Brown, orDitie as she's known by her friends, being contacted by an old friend whom she hadn't seen in a couple of years despite them being very

I definitely wouldn't advertise this as a "cozy" mystery. It does not have the feel most cozies have and does have some curse words in there. This mystery has a more serious feel but not too scary or graphic. That being said, I did enjoy it and will try to read more in the series.

I was given an eARC by the publisher through NetGalley.

Pediatrician Mabel Aphrodite Brown – Ditie – who spends her life saving kids. She works at a refugee clinic and sees kids with everything from malnutrition to abusing “uncles”. She comes to care a lot about these children in just the few minutes she spends with them. She has no kids of her own and would make a wonderful mom. She is stunned when her friend, Ellie Winston shows up at her door asking her to watch her kids, Lucie and Jason for a few days while she straightens out

Too Many Crooks Spoil the Plot is the first book in the Ditie Brown Mystery series. As with all cozies, there is a murder, a sleuthing woman hellbent on finding the killer (sometimes a male, but mostly women), and some twists and turns. For the most part, I did enjoy reading this one. I liked the characters and setting. However, this book didn't feel lighthearted like most cozies. There was a ton of emotion wrapped into the

This was such a good start for a brand new series! And it was well-titled too because there were definitely a LOT of crooks in this story, or at least suspects!

Ditie Brown was a pediatrician working at a refugee children's clinic in Atlanta, GA when her childhood friend Ellie asked her to watch her own two kids for a few days. When Ellie ended up murdered, Ditie knew she had to protect these kids. With the help of her best friend Lurleen and her new detective friend, Mason, Ditie had to keep

I really enjoyed this one, it was relatable, realistic and inviting. The characters really made it for me; warm, true to life and charming, from the capable Ditie, stepping up to take in Ellie's kids to the sassy Lurleen to the sweet romance between Ditie and Mason, I found myself roped in from the first page. Lurleen is really the one I want to know more about, her back story was hinted at several times in the book and I'm looking forward to learning more about her. The suspenseful plot kept me ...more

TOO MANY CROOKS SPOIL THE PLOT is an excellent beginning to the new Ditie Brown Mystery series. Author Sarah Osborne has created a a strong protagonist in Mable Aphrodite "Ditie" Brown. I had emotional ups and downs most of the book, and on the edge of my seat during the last several chapters. I wouldn't say it is a cozy so much as a mystery with cozy aspects. It's a lot deeper at times because of a tragedy that effects two children. That being said, I enjoyed the story and I'm looking forward ...more

Sarah Osborne is a new to me author and for the most part I liked this first book in her new Ditie Brown Mystery series. I found Ditie to be a likable character that came across the page as genuine, warm and caring. The secondary cast of characters is diverse in gender, personality and occupation. There is plenty of room for these characters to grow and develop allowing them to remain interesting and engaging. The mystery was solid and the author wove plenty of twists and turns into the plot to ...more

I can’t recommend this book enough! If you are a cozy mystery fan who likes smart, warm and complex characters, I suggest you read, Too Many Crooks Spoil the Plot. It starts off cozy, engaging and delightful. It quickly becomes absorbing and suspenseful. Who was Ellie, really? What was she involved in? Why did she take that risk the day she dropped her children off with Mabel? What did Phil want? You’ll find yourself asking all these questions and more by chapter three! The pacing is perfect and ...more

Too Many Crooks Spoil the Plot by Sarah Osborne is the first A Ditie Brown Mystery. Mabel “Ditie” Brown is a pediatrician who works and lives in Atlanta, Georgia. She is surprised when Ellie Winston, who she has not seen in two years, show up at her house. Ellie only shows up when she is in trouble and this time is no exception. Too Many Crooks Spoil the Plot by Sarah Osborne is the 1st book in A Ditie Brown Mystery series, and my first book by this author. Dr. Mabel, Ditie, Brown is a pediatrician. When Ditie's childhood friend asked her to take care of her two kids for a couple of days, she agrees. Unfortunately the children's mother is murdered, and Ditie vows to find the murderer. I really enjoyed this book, it was unique, and filled with twists and turns. I found this book a little more serious than most cozy, but ...more

Too Many Crooks Spoil the Plot is the first book in Sarah Osborne’s Ditie Brown Mystery series. The characters are three dimensional and likeable and the storyline is well plotted and complex. This book is more absorbing and suspenseful than most cozies. There’s a lot of emotion on the pages of this book, with both tear jerking and laugh aloud moments, and romance in the air. There’s no shortage of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged and guessing. I’m looking forward to reading the next ...more

I am always on the lookout for a new mystery or series. Too Many Crooks Spoil the Plot by Sarah Osbourne is a fast-moving, intriguing mystery that has some very likable characters, a few to dislike, and a few from which to run.

Ditie(short for Aphrodite), Lurlene, and Jason and Lucie are arguably some of the most likable. Ditie is a pediatrician who finds herself suddenly in charge of her friend’s children. Jason and Lucie are adorable, childlike and adult-like by turns, making one’s heart ache

First of all, the title is a misnomer - there are a LOT of crooks here, including a whole school of red herrings, but they don't spoil the plot. Actually, the plot was quite good, and very convoluted with an unexpected climax and resolution. Mable Aphrodite Brown is a wonderful main protagonist for what has the potential to be a great new series.

The one thing that bothered me at first is that children were at risk, which I don't like. The only saving grace to that was a wonderful band of

The first book in the Ditie Brown series and a new author for me. It is character driven and I fill in love with the characters immediately. Pediatrician Mabel Aphrodite Brown aka as Ditie Brown is working at a refugee clinic in Atlanta, Georgia when Ellie Winston asked her to watch her children, Lucie and Jason for the weekend. Ditie agree at once and was looking forward to the weekend. Late the evening Ditie is awoken by a police homicide detective who informs her that they have found Ellie ...more

This random find on NetGalley ended up being a gem of a book! I absolutely loved everything about it, from the charming characters to the twisty mystery. I fell in love with almost every person in the book, which is rare for me. Usually I really like a couple of characters and am neutral about the rest, but everyone in this book was so endearing and likable!

The mystery itself was very well done. It kept me guessing until the main reveal, and left me shocked. So many times I thought I knew what

Too Many Crooks Spoil the Plot is an excellent start to a new series.

I was hooked from the very beginning. Ditie ( short for Aphrodite) is a fun, colorful character and I enjoyed getting to know her and her friends.

When an old friend of Ditie shows up unexpectedly, with a big favor, Ditie has no idea what she is in for.
The story was suspenseful and interesting and found myself wondering just who in the heck Ellie was!

This book will appeal to all cozy mystery fans, young and old and in between.

Too Many Crooks Spoil the Plot begins with “Nothing warned me that my world was about to tilt on its axis and never tilt back again,” a sentence full of promise for a good cozy mystery. Author Sarah Osborne manages to pack a lot of background into her opening chapter. We are introduced to the main character, Dr. Ditie Brown, a pediatrician who works in a refugee clinic, her two pets, and her brother Tommy. There are hints of family troubles. Ditie reunites with her old friend Ellie whose ...more

Princess Fuzzypants here: It took a while for this book to hook me but hook me it did. I would not call it a slow build. Almost off the mark Ditie is confronted with the murder of a long time friend and the guardianship of her two children. The deceased mother was not terribly reliable so the young daughter has had to assume the role of parent to her younger brother and is precociously mature. Ditie, who is accomplished, feels like a square peg in a round hole and perhaps that is why she is ...more

Too Many Crooks Spoil the Plot was a great read! This cozy mystery is full of action and kept me guessing up to the end. The story revolves around Mabel “Aprhrodite” Brown, a pediatrician in Atlanta whose childhood best friend, Ellie Winston, turns up dead after asking Dite to watch her two children, Lucie and Jason for the night.
Dite goes into sleuth mode immediately and enlists the help of her friend Lurleen, an eccentric side-kick with a penchant for all things French, to help her care for

Ok, this doesn't seem like a cozy mystery. It isn't graphic, but the issues are a bit darker.

What I enjoyed:
* Ditie is a great character. She is a doctor who works at a refugee clinic and ends up agreeing to watch her friends kids to keep them safe.
* Lurleen is an interesting character who is full of "stories" from her life.
* Actually all the characters were intriguing. The brother who wants his privacy, the ex-cop mother, the PI, etc
* Looks like there is just one love interest, which makes me

Don't think of this as a cozy- it's got a sad angle to it as the plot turns on Ditie agreeing to watch Ellie's, an old friend, young children and then discovering, when Ellie is murdered, that she will be their guardian. Of course, Ditie and her friend Lurleen, will investigate the murder. There's a lot going on here and perhaps it's a bit much. Ditie is a pediatrician who works at a clinic, she's got family problems of her own, there's corporate espionage and so on. Any two of these plot ...more

This is the first book of the series and my first book to read by the author. I thoroughly enjoyed all the characters. I LOVed Dr. Ditie and her bf Lurlene is an interesting character. She has so many sides to her. I think even Ditie doesn’t know the real woman. Ditie’s bf is murdered and she is entrusted with the friend’s two children. The bad guys, and there seems to be a number of them, want something that possibly Ditie or the kids may have. They try to go in hiding with the detective, his ...more

Book 1 in a new series.

This book was a great start to the series. Ditie is a genuine, loving character, and the kids were a sweet addition that made me actually cry a few times.

Unlike most cozies, where you don't get too into the emotional effects of a murder on the family, this book was a bit emotionally heavy at times, with the young kids mourning their mother and afraid of what was happening to them. It was well written though, and wasn't too solemn, there were the usual lighthearted

I really enjoyed this smart cozy mystery. A protagonist who's a pediatrician? Love it! Although some aspects of the situation fall together a little too easily/seamlessly, there is really an effort to show the grief, adjustment, and resilience of kids. And most important in a mystery, there's a great mystery! The plotting is solid, the wide cast of characters is varied and easily distinguishable, and I felt content at the end of the book. A great escape novel for a few hours, with a terrific ...more
