It’s overpriced; the bibliography leans too heavily on CD liner notes; there are no brilliant insights; the text is poorly edited; the author does not appear to have any scholarly credentials. An academic guide to the St Matthew Passion. I am seeing it for the first time soon so needed some way in. I used this book whilst listening to a recorded performance and it has definitely helped in understanding the structures and musical ideas as well as putting it in a historical context.
