If you want to write news, I'd suggest this as a good primer. Ruehlmann provides a step-by-step guide that will introduce the novice to the craft and provide ideas for the professional.

Despite its '70s vintage, this guide to feature writing remains useful, if less so than it probably was at the time. One plus is that it's practical rather than theoretical or professorial.
