वरदान' - प्रेमचंद द्वारा लिखी एक प्रेम कथा है। प्रेमचंद जी ने अपने इस उपन्यास में दो प्रेमियों की दुखांत कथा है और उन दो प्रेमियों के माध्यम से प्रेम की सही परिभाषा को जाहिर किया है। साथ ही प्रेम के हर पहलू को अपने इस कथा के पात्रों के माध्यम से समझाने का प्रयत्न किया है। 'वरदान' में प्रताप नायक है, जो दीन दुखियों रोगियों दलितों का बिना किसी स्वार्थ के मदद करते है और विरजन के साथ प्रेम के मोहपाश में बंध कर अपनी भावी जिंदगी की कोमल और खुशियों से भरी हुई कल्पनाएं करते है। लेकिन उनकी यह कल्पना सच्चाई नहीं बन पाती है और विरजन का कमलाचरण से अनमेल विवाह हो जाता है। प्रेमचंद जी ने अपने इस उपन्यास में प्रेम जीवन में आई हर स्थितियों की कहानी को बहुत बारीकी से निरीक्षण कर उसे अपने इस उपन्यास में व्यक्त किया है।

About the author

Munshi Premchand (Hindi: मुंशी प्रेमचंद) was an Indian writer famous for his modern Hindustani literature. He is one of the most celebrated writers of the Indian subcontinent,and is regarded as one of the foremost Hindustani writers of the early twentieth century.

Born Dhanpat Rai, he began writing under the pen name "Nawab Rai", but subsequently switched to "Premchand", while he is also known as "Munshi Premchand", Munshi being an honorary prefix. A novel writer, story writer and dramatist, he has been referred to as the "Upanyas Samrat" ("Emperor among Novelists") by some Hindi writers. His works include more than a dozen novels, around 250 short stories, several essays and translations of a number of foreign literary works into Hindi.

Premchand is considered the first Hindi author whose writings prominently featured realism. His novels describe the problems of the poor and the urban middle-class. His works depict a rationalistic outlook, which views religious values as something that allows the powerful hypocrites to exploit the weak. He used literature for the purpose of arousing public awareness about national and social issues and often wrote about topics related to corruption, child widowhood, prostitution, feudal system, poverty, colonialism and on the India's freedom movement.

Several of his early works, such as A Little Trick and A Moral Victory, satirised the Indians who cooperated with the British colonial government.

In the 1920s, he was influenced by Mahatma Gandhi's non-cooperation movement and the accompanying struggle for social reform. During this period, his works dealt with the social issues such as poverty, zamindari exploitation (Premashram, 1922), dowry system (Nirmala, 1925), educational reform and political oppression (Karmabhumi, 1931).

In his last days, he focused on village life as a stage for complex drama, as seen in his most famous work Godan as well as the short-story collection Kafan (1936).Premchand believed that social realism was the way for Hindi literature, as opposed to the "feminine quality", tenderness and emotion of the contemporary Bengali literature.

The myth of Premchand as a simple and sweet story teller was broken by this.
The plot has many things - patriotism, revolution, devotion... and it kept changing turns rapidly.
But none of it, not even a Devdas kind of love triangle, was engrossing enough compared to any of his other works.
While the beginning was okayish, struggled and slogged through the latter part to somehow not drop it abandoned.
A disappointing read.

'Vardan' is the story of one of the most beautiful feelings of the world- love. Throughout, Premchand through his characters tries to draw a framework of unconditional love. Each and every individual is a specimen of the feeling and is enwrapped with the warmth and the patience that love brings along.
It all begins from the unconditional love of a mother who desires a son who would do anything but above all serve the country. Imbibed in two children's childhood, binding them throughout life it takes another turn where it is hidden behind the complexities of relations. Who were like sister and brother for the whole world had deep feelings entrusted within them that never came out and remained lurking inside and transformed them into creators and world changers. Vardan is a comparison of love that comes with the duty and the love that seeks the happiness of the beloved. Love which comes with its atrocities and jealousies but is powerful enough to end them too. It is the love which does not comes with fantasies and love which reaches much beyond human desires and urges. A story which does not ends within the usual happy ending frameworks but leaves you with a beautiful sigh and peace.
And amidst all this Premchand in his usual charm has described the rural life, the duties of a Hindu wife and how she sacrifices herself for her husband, the growing up of a boy and a girl, the sacredness of marriage and all the social lives sketched around a usual Banaras household with its Indian essence.
Love, as Premchand asserts is stronger than patience. It is in nature and in fellow beings. A relationship of two hearts, he says, is stronger than the worldly rituals. And then without completing itself Vardan ends with questions and unending answers. I admit that the second part of the story has taken tragic turns and has reduced the igniting beauty but it is equally true that the story of sacrifice and of love has been beautifully woven in the few words that Premchand chose.

I had high expectations from Premchand, who is considered one of the greatest writers of Hindi and Urdu literature. But after reading his novel Vardan, I was left feeling dissatisfied and bored. The novel is supposed to be a love story between Pratap, a noble and generous young man who helps the poor and the sick, and Virjan, a beautiful and innocent girl who falls in love with him. But the novel fails to create any emotional impact or suspense, as the plot is predictable and clichéd.

The novel is full of stereotypes and melodrama. Pratap's mother is a selfish and greedy woman who opposes his love for Virjan and forces him to marry Kamla, a rich and spoiled girl. Virjan's father is a weak and cowardly man who sells her off to Kamalcharan, a cruel and corrupt landlord. Pratap and Virjan suffer in their respective marriages and pine for each other. They meet again after many years, but their reunion is short-lived as they are separated by fate and society.

The novel does not explore the complexities of human relationships or the social issues of the time. Premchand seems to have a simplistic and idealistic view of love, which he portrays as pure, selfless and eternal. He does not show the flaws or struggles of his characters, who are either too good or too bad.

The novel is also poorly written and edited. The language is dull and repetitive. The dialogues are unnatural and unrealistic. The descriptions are vague and boring. The narration is inconsistent and confusing. The novel lacks coherence and structure.

In conclusion, I would not recommend Vardan to anyone who is looking for a good love story or a meaningful literary work. It is a disappointing novel that does not do justice to Premchand's reputation or talent.

I have read 3 books of Premchand, and these three books have become my favorite book, but I did not like this fourth book at all, I liked half part, but you can understand the rest part,

This is the first book of Premchand that l have read and can't wait to read more of his work.


It has been more than 8 years since I have read more than 2 pages of anything in Hindi and more importantly Hindi literature, but I prepared myself before taking this old lane of reading Hindi stories.


Vardan is a story of love, sacrifice, human values, spirituality, poverty, superstition, the lifestyle of India in the early 20th century and much more.


Set in Varanasi, the story revolves around its two main characters Pratap and Vrajrani, who become neighbours due to Pratap's mother's financial condition. They are friends from childhood and spends all their time together, either playing or reading. Pratap has a really big impact on Vrajrani's habit of reading. Pratap and Vrajrani fall in Love with each other, but their love has a very different meaning than today's love, as I think it is from a different era. Even the people around them see their love as' brother-sister's love, but nobody sees the love growing and transforming into something beautiful, something different from all kinds of love present around them. As the story progress, we see both of them sacrificing themselves for their country and beliefs. Other than this beautiful love story, the narrator also takes us on those old houses of villages of ancient India, where it was a ritual to talk abusively on the occasion of Holi, where one's words held more value than one's money, where pride and respect were considered as most expensive ornaments. 


The book is for those people who want to live in that old India and wants to experience its values through Premchand's writing.

मैंने अपने जीवन में जो सबसे पहला उपन्यास पढ़ा था...और पूरा पढ़ा था...वह था ग़बन। और कहीं न कहीं उसको पढ़ने के बाद से ही मैं एक किताबी कीड़ा बन गई। वहीं से मुझमें पढ़ने और कुछ रचने का शौक पनपा।

हम सब बचपन से ही अपनी कक्षाओं में मुंशी प्रेमचंद की कहानियाँ पढ़ते आ रहे हैं। और कहीं न कहीं हम सबका साहित्य से पहली बार परिचय वहीं पर हुआ था। जाने-अनजाने वहीं से हमारे अंदर साहित्य पढ़ने का शौक पनपा।

'हिंदी मीडियम' से पढ़ा शायद ही कोई ऐसा व्यक्ति होगा जो 'हामिद' को न जानता हो। और कोई कहानी याद हो न हो, बचपन में पढ़ी 'ईदगाह' हमें आज भी याद है।

मेरे लिए मुंशी प्रेमचंद की जगह कोई और नहीं ले सकता। वही थे जिन्हें मैंने पहली बार पढ़ा...पढ़ा ही नहीं बल्कि समझा। और अवधेश सर कहते थे कि समझा हुआ जीवन भर नहीं भूलता।

आज सिर्फ़ "नई वाली हिंदी" पढ़ने के चक्कर में कहीं न कहीं हम अपनी पुरानी धरोहर को भूल रहे हैं। हमें नहीं भूलना चाहिए कि "नई वाली हिंदी" के लेखक भी पुरानी वाली हिंदी को पढ़कर ही इस मुकाम तक पहुँचे हैं। और हिंदी तो हिंदी है... तो फिर ये नई-पुरानी वाली बात कहाँ से आ गई? हमें तो सिर्फ़ हिंदी पढ़ना है, फिर चाहे वो नई हो या पुरानी। दोनों को समान रूप से पढ़ना है।

आदर्शों का बेहतरीन नमूना पेश करती हुई किताब ! हर रिश्ते की पवित्रता इतनी कि हर एक पात्र को नमन करने को जी चाहता है । विरजन और प्रतापचंद्र के एक दूसरे के प्रति भाव, माधवी का प्रेम और समाज की सच्चाई का बहुत अच्छे तरीके से विवरण किया गया है। इन सब को बाँधता हुआ एक ये एहसास भी कि ये सत्य है कि मानव का मन परिस्थितियों से उसे कई बार विचलित हो जाता है परंतु मानव उससे किस तरह निपटता है यही उसका चरित्र निर्माण करता है।

✓Vardaan is the love story between Virjan and Pratap, lovers who dreamt of a happy life together since they were kids. However, expectations and responsibilities ended up separating them forever. The story begins with Suvama praying for a son. Goddess appears and grants her with a Vardaan (boon) of a wise son, Pratap.
✓The plot has various themes such as, patriotism, love, friendship, responsibilities etc. Remember the kind of separation that the Devdas characters had? Its similiar to that.
✓I liked the beginning of the story but gradually it dropped it's pace. I struggled to read the second half but being an admirer of Munshi Premchand's work, I didn't want to DNF this one. I don't regret reading this though.
✓The portrayal of innocent and unconditional love is remarkable. The story does not have a happy ending but it will leave you with a peaceful smile. In my opinion, this read was not as promising as the other works of Munshi Premchand, but reading this story about love and sacrifice is something that I don't regret.

This is my first premchand book. The story is simple and reminds you of simpler times when humans, emotions and community were very simple and so were the times.

The characters are real and myth at the same time. The character, the perseverance, sense of honor, integrity, right and wrong and total submission to just the idea of love is not just unbelievable but envious and admirable.

I was taken back to my days at school learning Hindi in its purest form. It made me smile and was also a stark reminder of how much of the pronunciation, synonyms and meanings of words have become lost to me for lack of not using Hindi in its purest version over the years.

This book for me was a walk down the memory lane of my school days.

The story begins nicely by describing the simple life of simple, ordinary people (men, women, and children). They experience happiness, attachments, grief, and compromises of simple life. Very realistic and charming. Then there is a description of some rituals in a village. It gives a picture of rural India during the British rule. An interesting read. In the last quarter of the book, the guilt-and-grief-stricken protagonist then leaves his home to serve society. It is stated that he becomes great. Suddenly another character takes center stage and, under the influence of feelings towards him, renounces family life forever. Glorification of the feeling of sacrifice. Seems artificial.

पुराने समय की डेटिंग बड़ी जटिल होती थी, भाई. वरदान प्रेमचंद की एक पेचीदा कृति है. इसे एक लघु-उपन्यास कह सकते हैं. एक से दो दिन में इसे पढ़कर ख़त्म किया जा सकता है. कहानी है बचपन के प्रेम की. लड़का लड़की एक साथ भाई बहन की तरह बड़े हुए. दोनों के घर आपस में सटे हुए थे, रोज़ का आना जाना था. बचपन का बचपने वाला प्यार हो गया और फिर लड़की का विवाह अन्यत्र हो गया. इसी के आगे की कहानी है जिसमें किंकर्तव्यविमूढ़ता है और मार्मिक दुःख है. दुखांत कथा है पहले से ही बताए देते हैं. आर के नारायण की गाइड और धर्मवीर भारती के गुनाहों का देवता की याद आती है.
प्रेमचन्द ने इससे बेहतर लिख रखा है.

In today's India, it is impossible to find this kind of literature. It carries social, philosophical andd emotional themes. This book revolves around faith vs. rationality, social injustice and caste, Human suffering and hope, and the illusion of divine intervention. Premchand emphasized on the critical thinking and warned against the blind faith. Through this book he told us the real change comes through action, compassion and justice not through prayer or wishful thinking.

If you are a reader then you can finish this in some hours. It took me whole day to finish this book.

Good read. Though at this time it seems somewhat old fashioned but keeping in view that this was written way back in 1912 it seems well in sync with that times.
Can be completed in 1/2 sittings. We will not be able to enjoy it if we compare it with todays world where women liberation is a fact of life.

Magnificent book by Premchand. A story of sacrifice, love, sadness, pain, culture, etc. This book will not give you what will you be wanting in between the story. But whatever it gives you is right and it has done in the way should have been done.

Aimless story

प्रेमचंद जी के उपन्यासों में ये खास बात होती है कि वे पाठक को अंत तक बाँधे रखते हैं। वरदान भी उसी प्रकार का उपन्यास है। इसके कई कारणों में से एक कारण ये भी होता है कि कहानियों में मोड़ कई जगह विद्यमान होते हैं। जैसे अचानक मुंशी शालिग्राम के संन्यास ग्रहण से उपजी विपत्ति, सुशीला की मृत्यु, प्रताप और विरजन के भ्रम अथवा कमलाचरण का कायापलट होना। ये कहानी में आये तीव्र मोड़ प्रायः पाठकों को पुनर्जागृत करने का काम करते हैं। इतना ही नहीं प्रेमचंद जी की एक विशेषता ये भी है कि उनके हर उपन्यास में हर घटना, उसके प्रतिफल और बीच-बीच में दर्शन की हरेक बातों को स्पष्ट रूप से न्यायसंगत सिद्ध किया जाता है। इसके साथ ही लेखन कुशलता ऐसी की सम्पूर्णता का संचार अवश्यम्भावी है।

वरदान के स्तम्भ इसके पात्र हैं। कहानी दो भागों में कुल तीन विशेष पात्रों के इर्द-गिर्द घुमती है। पहले भाग ���ें जो समूचे उपन्यास का लगभग दो-तिहाई हिस्सा है उसमें मुख्य किरदार प्रताप और वृजरानी (विरजन) होते हैं। जबकि अंत के कुछ हिस्सों में माधवी का किरदार इन दोनों पर हावी हो जाता है। उपन्यास की समाप्ति प्रताप , विरजन और माधवी को अलग-अलग स्थितियों में छोड़ कर हो जाती है। पर ऐसा नहीं है कि कहानी पूर्ण नहीं हुई। सभी पात्रों के राहों में उचित मोड़ देकर ही कहानी ख़त्म हुई है। कहानी कई बार नाटकीय ढंग से ���िचकोले खाती है और फिर कुछ समय तक यथावत संतुलित बनी रहती है। वरदान के पात्र भी लगभग स्थायी ही रहे हैं। पात्रों की संख्या में कोई ज्यादा बढ़ोत्तरी नहीं हुई है जिससे कहानी सुदृढ़ बनी रहती है। राधा और तुलसी नाम के दो पात्रों की चर्चा निस्संदेह अति आवश्यक नहीं लगती। पर थोड़े समय के लिए विरजन को मझगाँव भेज कर संभवतः गाँव की स्थितियों का बोध कराने हेतु प्रेमचंद जी ने स्थान परिवर्तन किया होगा और इसीलिए गाँव के कुछ किरदारों की आवश्यकता महसूस हुई होगी। हर उपन्यास की तरह इसमें भी पात्र-प्रस्तावना में काफी बल है। प्रताप को बचपन से ही प्रतापी और होनहार दिखाने में प्रेमचंद जी ने कोई कसर नहीं छोड़ा। वहीं दूसरी ओर कमलाचरण का उद्दंड होना अथवा विरजन की सूझबूझ को सहजतापूर्वक दिखाया गया है। उपन्यास की भाषा साधारण किन्तु शालीन है जो कि काशी नगरी के लिए उपयुक्त है। शब्दों का चयन भी प्रासंगिक ही है। हालाँकि पूरे उपन्यास में कुछ दो-तीन बार पंक्तियों का दुहराव भी देखा गया है।

अगर वरदान की तुलना गोदान से की जाये तो निश्चय ही वरदान पाठकों के मन-मस्तिष्क में ज्यादा पैठ बनाता है। गोदान में दो कहानियाँ अलग-अलग स्थान पर एक ही समय में चलती हैं जिससे थोड़ी जटिलता की अनुभूति होती है जबकि यहाँ कहानी स्पष्ट और संक्षिप्त है। अगर शीर्षक के बारे में बात की जाये तो शीर्षक न सिर्फ उपयुक्त है बल्कि दो भावों का प्रतिनिधित्व भी करता है। कहानी की शुरुआत वरदान से ही होती है। प्रताप सुवामा की गोद में देवी के वरदान स्वरुप ही आता है। और फिर पूरे उपन्यास में देवी का वरदान फलीभूत होते दिखता है। इसके अलावा कहानी के अंत में माधवी को योगिनी होने का वरदान मिलता है। पर दूसरे अर्थ में वरदान माधवी के द्वारा किये गये वर अर्थात् पति का त्याग यानि दान भी सिद्ध होता है। इस तरह से शीर्षक हर तरह से उचित और स्पष्ट है, यद्यपि केवल शीर्षक पढ़ कर कहानी का अनुमान लगाना दुष्कर है।

वरदान व्यक्ति विशेष की मनोभावों में आये परिवर्तन और वैचारिक द्वन्द्वता को प्रदर्शित करती है। गाँव में फैले अंधविश्वास को भी दुत्कारता है। पर जो विषय सबसे ज्यादा महत्वपूर्ण है और जिसपर सबसे ज्यादा बल दिया गया है वह है निःस्वार्थ प्रेम। पाठक विरजन और प्रताप के द्वारा पवित्र प्रेम की अनुभूति सहजता से कर सकते हैं। वहीं माधवी के द्वारा प्रेम के युग्मक त्याग को भी शीर्ष स्थान दिया गया है। इस तरह से प्रेमचंद जी ने वरदान के सहारे मानव मात्र के शाश्वत धर्म प्रेम, सेवा और त्याग को बड़ी कुशलता से कहानी के रूप में परोसने का प्रशंसनीय काम किया है।

मुंशी जी की किसी भी किताब की समीक्षा करना अपने आप में ही बहुत बड़ी बात है और ये पुस्तक तो मेरे जीवन की पहली पुस्तक है।
यदि आप इस किताब की तुलना मुंशी जी की बाकी किताबों से करते है तो ये उनकी पहचान सहज और सरल लेखन से बिलकुल अलग है और काफी पेचीदा दृश्यों से भरा हुआ है, वरदान कहानी की ओर कम और अपने पात्रों के इर्द गिर्द ज्यादा घूमती इसके पात्र ही इस कहानी की जान है
सुवामा की मातृ भावना और प्रेम, प्रतापचंद्र का प्रतापी और होनहार किरदार, विरजन का सरल हृदय और सहजता तथा कमलाचारण का चंचल और उद्दंड स्वभाव सभी किरदारों को एक उचित स्थान पर छोड़ दिया गया है


सुवामा एक सुपुत्र की कामना किए हुए मां अष्टभुजा की पूजा करती है अंततः मां अष्टभुजा ने प्रसन्न हो कर उसे एक सुपुत्र का वरदान दिया प्रतापचंद्र,
प्रतापचंद्र का जीवन अत्यंत ही मार्मिक घटनाओं से भरा हुआ है, इस कहानी में बचपन में ही प्रतापचंद्र के पिता का चले जाना, विरजन और प्रतापचंद्र की दुखांत मार्मिक प्रेम कथा, प्रतापचंद्र की असाधारण प्रतिभा, विरजन और कमलाचरण के बेमेल विवाह, विरजन और प्रतापचंद्र के जीवन की अनेक कठिनाइयों और अंततः उनके त्याग का चित्रण मुंशी जी ने बड़े ही मार्मिक ढंग से किया है।
एक पाठक के तौर पर आप कही कही कहानी और पात्रों के निर्णय से बहुत निराश हो सकते है लेकिन लेखक से बिलकुल नही

While reading Vardan, I kept on feeling as if I was in a village of some old Black & White Bollywood movie. Must be because of the sweetness and innocence of the characters, and the graceful diction that was also used in those movies.

Unfortunately, I could not relate to the characters. They felt further away from me than even the characters of English novels of the Victorian period. Maybe because their spirit of total sacrifice, of surrender to misery, surrender of love, depiction of leaders that get worshiped as God etc. the book felt too unreal to a heart and mind habitual of bitter realities and all pervasive impurities of the modern India.

Another thing I did not like was the fragmented nature of the story. It starts as a story of a mother, than becomes a story of the daughter of her neighbour, and finally ends as the story of quite another girl. Of course, the hero is the link between all three, but he himself is just moving further and further away and breaking all links.

गोदान के बाद अगर मुझे मुंशी प्रेमचंद की कोई रचना सबसे ज़्यादा पसंद आई है, तो वो यही है। इस उपन्यास में उन्होंने प्रताप और विरजन जैसे पात्रों को जिस भावनात्मक गहराई और मानवीय संवेदनाओं के साथ प्रस्तुत किया है, वह सचमुच बेमिसाल है। शायद प्रेमचंद जी के अलावा कोई और लेखक इतनी सहजता से इंसानी दिल की मासूम भावनाओं, लगाव और मन के उलझे हुए विचारों को इस तरह शब्दों में नहीं ढाल सकता। उनकी लेखनी इतनी सच्ची और आत्मीय लगती है कि आप हर भाव को खुद महसूस करने लगते हैं। इस उपन्यास की कथा-वस्तु, संवाद और बिंब सभी बेहद प्रभावशाली हैं। सबसे खास बात यह है कि पाठक खुद को कहानी से जोड़ लेता है, कई बार ऐसा लगता है जैसे ये पात्र हमारे अपने जीवन से उठकर सामने आ गए हों।

वरदान एक छोटा उपन्यास है जिसे आप एक या दो दिन में आराम से पढ़ सकते हैं। लेकिन इसकी संवेदनशीलता और गहराई आपको लंबे समय तक सोचने पर मजबूर करती है। यह एक ‘soft’ लेकिन बेहद ‘intense’ अनुभव देता है।

अगर आप हिंदी साहित्य के प्रेमी हैं, या प्रेमचंद की लेखनी को महसूस करना चाहते हैं, तो वरदान आपके लिए एक “must read” है। मैंने इसे पूरे दिल से 5 में से 5 सितारे दिए हैं, और यक़ीन मानिए, यह कहानी आपके दिल को ज़रूर छू जाएगी।

Seriously great

This was my first Hindi novel which I read just because I wanted to read something written by Munshi Premchand ji and trust me guys nothing could be better than this.
If a person really want to read something especially in Hindi classic please read it you won't regret.

But Amazon did some very terrible job here by not making this great piece of writing error free and not providing any Hindi to English translation dictionary. If they wanted to launch something for Indians and Hindi literature then why not something extraordinary like the other products.

एक अच्छे लेखक से जोउम्मीद की जाती है , उसे 'मुंशी जी ' ने पूरा किया है . दुर्भाग्यवश ये पुस्तक केवल कुछएक समय के लिये ही मेरे हाथ लगी और मैं इसके तीसरे अध्याय तक ही पढ सका , परंतु इसके इन तीन अध्याय ने ही अपना परिचय दे दिया . 'सपूत ' की परिभाषा जो प्रस्तुत की गयी है वह उल्लेखनीय है .
एक श्रेष्ठ लेखक की श्रेष्ठ कृति !
