Seventeen-year-old Anouk envies the human world, where people known as Pretties lavish themselves in fast cars, high fashion, and have the freedom to fall in love. But Anouk can never have those things, because she is not really human. Enchanted from animal to human girl and forbidden to venture beyond her familiar Parisian prison, Anouk is a Beastie: destined for a life s ...more

This was actually the most deliciously lovely thing.
This is the kind of book where the gorgeous cover thoroughly promises what you’re going to find inside. It was so good, OK?! I completely fell in love with the characters, the vivid world building, thE PASTRY APPRECIATION, and all the characters’ snark (despite them being about to die). Quality content right here thank you I will take 7 more of these books.

The setting! The world! The exquisite descriptions!
I freaking love Paris. I have I been?

LMAOOOOOOOOOOOO I LOVE BEING SO ANGRY ABOUT THE BURY YOUR GAYS TROPE IN THIS BOOK THAT I DROP THE RATING TO ONE STAR!!!!!!!

Hi, this is my second one-star book of the year and I couldn’t be more excited to rant about it!!

(I’m kidding. I don’t want to have this discussion. Why do books like these—books with tragic dead gays—still exist. In 2018. 20GAYTEEN.)

I’m sad that this book didn’t turn out to be better than I expected, but unfortunately, this book just makes me extremely angry. Though I recei

I thought this was a pretty good start to the series and had an original feel to it. Anouk and four other "beasties" live together with a witch who gave them human form. After finding the witch murdered, Anouk and the other beasties leave their home. Anouk has never been out of the house, and I found her quite adorable in certain parts as she learned her way. There was also mystery: who killed the witch, where was one of the missing beasties, and will they be able to stop from turning back into ...more

I think this one will be very appealing to those on the younger end of the YA spectrum. I'm not sure where my expectations came from, but I was certain this would be darker and more mature than it was, and the failing of those expectations were solely on my end. While the idea was superb, it seems that the story fell a bit short for me, mainly due to the fact that I found this entire book to be mostly a setting up for the following stories that may take place. I think, if this part had been cond ...more

Grim Lovelies by Megan Shepherd is the first book in the young adult fantasy Grim Lovelies series. While this is primarily fantasy readers will also come across a bit of romance and mystery mixed into the action.

Seventeen year old Anouk is a Beastie. She spends her days peering out and envying the human world from her place in the captivity of Mada Vittora. Mada Vittora is the evil witch who captured and spelled Anouk and the other Beastie's in her command.

One day however Anouk comes across Ma

A perfect read if you're looking for a fast-paced urban fantasy. There was a literal ticking clock that kept you at the edge of your seat. I loved the concept of the characters, too, turning the Cinderella tale on its head and letting us see things from the perspective of animals-turned-people. And what could be a more magical setting than Paris? Personal side note: the covers for this series are pure eye candy! I'll definitely be reading book 2.

I… don’t remember much about this novel, and that’s honestly the first problem with Grim Lovelies. While the idea of the book is so cool, the end result leaves a lot to be desired.

I will say this though—I’m excited about where it could go. The ending left me with ideas of where Anouk’s story could go next, who she could be. Most of the novel, I experienced her grow from this innocent little beastie. If I have one weakness, it’s watching those sw

This was a very enjoyable read, but it didn't manage to intrigue me as much as I had initially hoped. It might also be that I just wasn't in the mood for reading, but I'm not sure.

The characters are quite lovely but I feel like some of them lacked depth. The story itself is cute, but I recommend it more for younger YA readers.

There we have it, folks. My first one-star rating of 2018. I am so sorry and hope I don't offend anyone with this post, but Grim Lovelies was the biggest disappointment of the year for me.

Grim Lovelies is an urban fantasy set in a Paris where there are different classes of people/supernaturals:

1) The Pretties: humans like us who live in the world, existing with their flashy technology and cars.
2) The Haute: The magical elite such

Can you remember the mice changed into footmen to conduct Cinderella’s coach? The animals-turned-into-humans have left no names in the many fairy tales where they appear. They remain faceless silhouettes, sentenced to serve the wizards and witches who gave them birth.
In her captivating novel, which I had the opportunity to read pre-publication, Megan Shepherd rights this wrong and finally gives a voice to those who never had one. She invites us to join a small group of runaway metamorphs in thei

Grim Lovelies is one of the loveliest fantasies I've read in a while! Shepherd's world of witches and beasties, goblins and magic is one of the most fully realized and immersive constructs I've had the pleasure of diving into. Anouk is a worthy and admirable heroine, full of fiery resolve and quiet strength. I cannot recommend this book enough!!!! DYING FOR THE SEQUEL.

The premise of this book is supposedly built on fairytales, but I really didn’t get that in the story. It’s its own beast.

This book struggled with trying too hard - I felt like I could see the mechanisms behind the scenes - how the plot would go, etc. There wasn’t enough to truly pull me through the story.

This was kind of okay but I expected more. The characters weren’t anything special, the plot was just okay, and nothing really happened. I was really excited about the concept, but it was just a small let down.

I wouldn’t say that I went into reading this with overly high expectations but this book did have considerable hype prior to release. Enough hype that I thought it would be a fairly good read at least. Well. I can honestly say that this book and I were not an adequate match.

With that being said, this isn’t necessairily a “bad” novel as a whole, it just was not something that fit my reading taste. I know a lot of people felt that this novel was action packed and a quick read but for me it was so

Imagine a book written by the mice from Cinderella, while they were human… and then add Paris, magic, witches, royals, goblins, and some darkness.

Grim Lovelies is about 5 beasties -animals that have been whispered into humans, told from the view of a shy, quiet girl named Anouk. Beasties’ lives are tied to the witch that created them. When they lose their witch, the beasties are in a race against time to find another spellcaster to keep them from returning to their animal forms at midnight, in t

3.5 ... almost 4 stars?

It was different, at times intriguing, it was good and then it became meh. Certain paths were set up in this (Prince Rennar’s character being at the forefront in my mind) and I was so excited for the story to follow that path but then it didn’t and I became so tired with the cat and mouse. The premise is absolutely fantastic, but it fell a bit flat for me. To the point I hoped this was a

Megan Shepherd is one of my favorite authors and I knew I had to read this novel. Fantasy is not one of my favorite genres but I really enjoyed this novel, once I got into it. With beasties, witches, pretty’s, royals and goblins, I really got myself in deep with the magic in this novel.

Anouk watched the world from the windows of the townhouse she was imprisoned in. Anouk was a beastie, enchanted by witch Mada Vittora, preventing her to leave, making her a servant, along with many other beasties

Alright, I have been trying to write my review for Grim Lovelies for a while and it’s a STRUGGLE. Mostly because I am very torn about this book. On the one hand, I really enjoyed Grim Lovelies and I think it was fun to read about the witches, goblins, royals, and the beasties (who used to be animals but were turned into humans by witches); but on the other hand, I

I really loved this book!  But it's another one that is going to be tough to review without giving anything away.  I apologize now if this is a mess.

I enjoyed the writing and it the pacing was great.  It was easy to like a lot of the characters, but there were some that I didn't like.  That was kind of the point though.  There were some very questionable characters in the book.  I also really loved the magic system.

Grim Lovelies takes place in Paris, but it's not the Paris we know.  This Paris

How to kill a great premise: YA fantasy edition.

First, let your main character have a very obscure name and quirky personality. Then, throughout the course of the book, make her into the most powerful creature of her kind.

Second, have a weird and rather pointless romance that only adds unnecessary drama to the story.

Third, never really develop the magic system and the world building except to further separate the unique main character.

Next, make the whole plot a trip from one place to another th
