Death wasn’t the end, it was only the beginning…

While it does feature one of the main characters from the previous books, as well as some of the secondary characters, this is not a continuation of those books as much as a new adventure with some of the same characters. OK, so here goes.
I absolutely loved the His Fair Assassins trilogy. I thought Grave Mercy was good, but not life changing, Dark Triumph was absolutely amazing and Sybella was my total hero. I bawled after this book. And I really loved Mortal Heart just for how unexpected it was. So when I saw Robin LaFevers was returning to this world, I knew I had to get my hands on Courting Darkness.
We've been told that this is a standalone duology in this world and that you don't need to read the previous boo

It's been a good long while since I've read a fantasy novel that is researched so well, the time period (which sits in between the Dark Ages and the Renaissance) comes to life with the gorgeous language LaFevers uses, I feel that I have stepped into history where there absolutely are assassin nuns sired by Death. Having the narrative come back to Sybella is a dream, she had so much story left to tell. When you last saw her and Beast they were off to accompany the duchess Anne to marry the King o ...more

Note to those who HAVE NOT read the first trilogy arc: This was pitches to me as a standalone duology and I have to disagree with that. I did not read the His Fair Assassin books and I was VERY lost for a good chunk of the book. CD picks up right where the previous books ends, so you’re thrown right into the middle of political intrigue and family feuds without any context or background. There are references to people and items that you will not have any clue about, and details on the assassins ...more

LaFevers' brilliant characters always have heart and teeth, and this story of young women in fifteenth century France strikes more true in the #MeToo era than one could imagine. Continuing Sybella's journey from the previous series, the striking assassin struggles to protect her sisters and the Duchess against the intrigue of the French court. Genevieve, another novitiate, has lain in wait for a new mission for over a year, and when she sees the opportunity to "rescue" an important prisoner of w ...more

Not truly a stand-alone, but a fine and deepening continuation of LaFevers first three historical fantasies about the empowered sister-assassins from the convent of St. Mortain in 1489 Brittany and France. (Netgalley)

I was told that I didn't need to read the previous trilogy to understand this one. That is just plainly not true.

There is almost no world building in this book. The religions don't make sense. The characters supposedly have deep relationships even though they never talk to each other and when they do its mostly in reference to thing that happened in the previous trilogy. I kept feeling like this book was punishing me for not reading the precious trilogy. Like "oh you wanted to understand why th

*I received an ARC of this at Yallfest 2018.*

I have never read anything by Robin LaFevers, so I was interested to see what I would think. Unfortunately, this book didn't work for me. The writing was ok, but didn't engage me and I found myself too distant from the characters.

I'm going to move onto something else and hopefully pass this along to someone who will enjoy it more.

I was so excited to read this fourth book in the series (or first in a duology?). It's definitely not a standalone series and focuses on Sybella and a new character Genevieve. I expected to breeze through this book as I did for the other three -- so engrossed I was in the stories. Unfortunately, it took a lot longer to get into the story and I'm not exactly sure why. Perhaps because I felt Genevieve's new character paled to Sybella's? Or maybe because of Mortain's own storyline at the end of the ...more

This book was as perfect as I had hoped it would be. And it also ruined me the way I knew it would. Yet I loved every moment of it. Courting Darkness gave me all that I had hoped for and more. Such a stunning book that I adored very much. Five stars for this one for sure. The writing was, once more, perfection. Loved it so.

And I'm so very happy that this book was half told from Sybella's point of view, as she was my favorite from the trilogy. And getting to read more about her made my heart the
