When the penitentiary ship she's incarcerated in gets sucked into an anomaly, Lydia barely survives the crash onto an alien planet. Only the sadistic experiments performed on her by the prison's scientist allow her to survive this harsh and dangerous world. The future looks grim until she stumbles upon a magnificent city of ice and its most unusual inhabitant.

Kai is fascinated by the delicate stranger fallen from the stars with the power to bring his hibernating city back to life. She stirs emotions long forgotten by his frozen heartstone. Can she be the salvation of his people or will the trap set by the Creators bring about their collective doom?

This book is standalone.

Creative premise, likable characters, and wonderful world-building. Author Regine Abel really knows how to set the scene. I kept trying to picture this world in my mind. Her characters are strong and vulnerable. If you love SFR, give this one a read.

I really loved the premise of this one - we've got a human with preternatural abilities ship wrecked on a frozen planet trying to save a golem like species from the oppression they've previously faced from invading species. I did feel like the story didn't have a lot of "umph" to it. It was good/fine, but didn't go anywhere I wasn't expecting. Still, I'm excited to try the next one in this series from this author, so I call that a win

I won this book in a goodreads drawing.

A woman suffering medical experiments on a prison ship that crashes on an inhabitable world somehow survives. She makes her way to a city of ice that appears to be inhabited by statues, but somehow, these statues are alive. She and her golem lover restart the city.

Could have been hotter. (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

Okay. So I love sci-fi romance. And I love when we get new takes on my favorite scenarios (a character being marooned on a planet and forced to use their wits and skills to survive is HIIIIGH on my list of faves). And I love romances that step outside the boundaries of a more traditional pairing (Lydia and Kai finding a way to be together despite their differences THRILLED me!).

Basically, I'm saying this book hit all my hot buttons. Romance on a distant world between two beings who are VERY different. LOOOOVE IT!

(To be fair, Regine Abel has quickly become an author whose sci-fi romances I adore, so loving this book isn't so much a surprise as a happy addition to my growing collection of books by her.)

But enough about my fangirl love for distant worlds. Let's talk about Lydia and Kai. The experiments aboard the prison ship has taken Lydia's inborn abilities and added a few extras to them. So she's VERY well equipped to handle the dangers the planet throws at her. As it turns out, only her ability to withstand extremes in heat and cold can help save Kai and his people from complete extinction. So, you know, I guess, IN THIS ONE INSTANCE, those experiments worked out for the best.

Meanwhile, Kai's existence is barren before Lydia arrives. He's going through the motions, but even he's starting to feel the press of time that so many of his brothers have succumbed to.

I REALLY liked this world and the awful things Lydia has to unravel to save Kai and his people. In fact, I want more of them. I want to see what happens next to this strange, powerful tribe and the human who reawakened them.

This is the first book I've read by Regine Abel, and will be reading more. I found this story to be charmingly sweet, even though the characters were altered and subjected to things against their will. I found myself smiling quite a few times whilst reading. The ending, was perfect. A wonderful book in an awesome collaboration with some remarkable authors.

Diversity, yay! I am tired of reading about the same type of women over and over as if they're the only ones that exist. The story may be fiction but the readers are not. It's only fair to your readers buying your books.
So thank you to Regine Abel for making me feel included.

There's not much of this book set in the prison, it's very brief flash of cell and being taken to a medical lab. I have a thing for space prisons, so I was hoping for a little more, but the story doesn't actually need it.
Lydia is running away and winds up in an abandoned city of ice. Only it's not entirely abandoned.
It's a unique situation and world she tumbles into (though why wheelbarrows don't exist is bewildering with everything else they have) and somewhat heartbreaking.
It can definitely be read as a standalone. This is the only one I've read and I had zero issues keeping up. It has a few questions about the wider world that hints more might be out there, but nothing that prevents the plot from progressing or wildly changes things.

The Valos of Sonhadra series is a Sci-Fi alien romance with each of the 9 books in the series being told by a different author. If you have a favourite author of the bunch and don't want to read them all don't worry, each book can be read as a standalone. The background story for each book is the same, the heroine for nefarious and various reasons has been locked away in a prison ship and being experimented on by scientists. The experimentation changes each of the heroines in some way, which becomes massively useful when the prison ship crash lands on an unfamiliar planet. That's when the heroine starts to meet the natives. Sonhadra, the planet they have landed on, is inhabited by different factions of valos. The valos all have unique abilities and appearances...and most of them haven't seen a female in a long long time.

Wins the Award for Most Heroic Heroine in the Series

Unfrozen is the closing chapter in this series and I am sad to see the end of it! It's been a good series full of different types of alien men and women with some interesting abilities. Lydia has one of my favourite abilities, she can change her body temperature so she is either freezing or burning hot. Which comes in handy when she has to save a whole race of valos by racing over a river of lava. That's pretty kick ass. The romance between Lydia and Kai, an ice valos, was cute, not as hot as some of the other books, but I loved seeing their relationship grow.

Overall thoughts: This was a nice note to end the series on and gave me yet another author to check out.

I really enjoyed this book. I thought the world building was good without being to intense for the length of the book. The budding relationship was great and I’m glad that there isn’t an tension in it. The tension lies in trying to get the home world back up and running and that keeps the book interesting. It’s not quite as built up as it could have been, but I felt for the length of the book that it was appropriate. I do wish we had got to meet the little one in the end, but perhaps that might happen in one of the other books?

Edited to add:

So after reading other reviews I am kinda bummed about how things wrapped up. While it does have a complete HEA ending with the couple, it does leave a lot of open ended questions regarding the world that was created. I imagine we find out what happened to all of the other people on her ship reading the other books, but I would love a scene were they all come together and really wrap things up and we didn’t get that in this book. That being said I think that I am going to try and get the others in the series and also read other books by this author.

Stop making me fall in love with hunky sweet aliens!! This book was amazing and the intricate world building combined with an engaging plot was fantastic. I would give it 10 stars if I could. I adored Lydia and Kai, and loved every moment of them exploring his world and getting closer to each other.
Sonhadra is a planet inhabited by the Valos, an elemental race of beings that can manipulate a specific element of their environment. An unknown planet to human exploration; and Lydia aboard a prison space station, has survived the treacherous crash upon the planet. Wrongfully accused and imprisoned, she endured heinous experiments. Now she's got to survive a hostile planet where everything has sharp teeth and claws. She stumbles upon a Valos city, whose inhabitants can only be saved from extinction by her strange and now enhanced abilities.

This book was such a sweet treat of a surprise. I’ve been in the mood for SciFi romance lately and this is one I picked up on a whim and decided to give it a read.

Lydia is our heroine. She’s been unjustly imprisoned and is on a prison ship where she’s been undergoing painful and horrendous experiments. Her chance for escape comes when the ship crashes onto a strange planet. She makes her way to beautiful yet frozen planet. Because the experiments she’s been subjected to alter her body temperature, she is able to withstand the coldness of the place. She is surrounded by frozen inhabitants and wonders what has happened to them. She thinks she’s alone but then discovers there is one left alive.

Kai is the last one left of his kind and he’s been kind of a caretaker of his people. He’s been very lonely with no one to talk to and at first he’s unable to communicate with this strange woman who bears a resemblance to the people who enslaved and then froze all of his people by removing their heartstones. It isn’t long though before he can talk with her and not only that but he discovers she has the power to revive his people.

The love story between Lydia and Kai is so sweet and tender. Kai is very much a beta type hero. He’s of the ‘crafter’ class and his main purpose is to make beautiful things. He’s so gone for Lydia, even though she’s like no one he’s ever encountered before. But she saved him from his loneliness, rescued his people and gave him back his purpose. And Lydia has never met anyone like Kai. She had had a lot of very bad relationships in her previous life but now she has met someone good and kind and giving who is crazy about her.

I really, really like this book. I can see me reading it again and I’m going to look up more books to read by this author.

I absolutely loved “Unfrozen” with its unique characters, creatures and world building.
This book is absolutely hilarious and super cute.
Told in a fast pace, Unfrozen is rich with events, funny dialogues and vivid images, that I couldn’t put it down. From the first pages I got hooked on Lydia, and couldn’t stop wondering what would happen to her next.
There were so many moments where I died laughing, that I can’t even count them all.
This read is totally recommended! Cute, funny, magical and full of bravery and love.

Oh My Gods, what a book! This my first book in the series, but it will not be my last. This Story by Regine Abel is absolutely so well written and thought out. It had a wonderful flow to it so much so that I just could not put the book down.
This is Lydia and Kai’s story. Lydia is so interesting she is amazing. Her body temperature variations are what helped her escape a deadly virus on earth, but it had another effect. The one thing that saved her life could be the thing that kills her too. As it made her highly desirable for experimentation on the prison ship. When the ship crashed she is determined to escape. But there are many dangers during her escape from the crash site. Those now enhanced abilities got her safely to the frozen city of E’lek. This is a fascinating city! Kai is the only still awake in the city, and he is curious about this new creature that has some features similar to the creator. Even thought they are so different I loved how they become more attracted to each other, seeing the great care Kai takes to ensure she has what she needs. Lydia’s is such a caring and compassionate person. Which is even more pronounced when she learns of the fate of the others in the city. She goes to great lengths to make sure they are safe, even if it cost her, her life.
Now before I ruin this for you I will leave off here. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. If you do like this book, please consider leaving a review. The Authors really like it when you do; they value your opinions too.

Kai and Lydia were too cute together. I absolutely adored the romance between them. It was a sweet slow burn. Lydia. . Was sweet but came across as selfless to a fault. I didn’t really enjoy her last “mission” or the pressure placed on her. It definitely felt as if her life was valued less in spite of all the work she did. Nothing is really revealed about the creators or the origin of the valos. But that could be due to this being a very far into the series. I enjoy Regine Abel writing and was pleased that her more repetitive phrases were absent in this book. However, she does have a habit of telling more than showing in some parts, especially when the end of the book is near. It’s as if she ran out of steam. But overall, I enjoyed this book.

Also: the representation of colored characters in these books aren’t my favorite. The hair is also described as cutesy curls that other characters are fascinated by. That gets old when it becomes repetitive in books written by non POC. Only 1 author has come close to me admiring the research they put into how POC take care of their hair and the reality of having something that isn’t cute or manageable at times. Rant over and doesn’t take away from the story but it’s a small peeve of mine that I ran into with this book.

Lydia and Kai warmed my heart!
Lydia is quite an interesting character. Her innate body-temperature variations helped her escape a deadly virus on earth and made her highly desirable for experimentation on the prison ship. She faced many dangers during her escape from the crash site. Those now enhanced abilities got her safely to the frozen city of E’lek. What a fascinating city it is! Kai, the only being still awake in the city, is curious about this new creature who has some features similar to the creator. I love seeing them become more attracted to each other, seeing the great care Kai takes to ensure she has what she needs. Lydia’s depth of caring and compassion is evident when she learns of the fate of the others in the city. She goes to great lengths to ensure their safety, with total disregard for her own fate. The story is packed with adventure, danger, laughter, passion...it’s all here, waiting for you to enjoy!

This is the ninth book in a series called Valos of Sonhadra, which is a collection of 9 books from 9 different authors. I haven’t read the others but I am so glad I have found Unfrozen. This is a paranormal and sci-fi book that starts with a prison for women from Earth that's been sent to space.

Our main character is named Lydia, who is one of the prisons that are being experimented on by scientists. At a random point, the prison enters a wormhole and crashes on an unknown planet. The story really begins at this point.

Kai is a side character that is interested in Lydia, and Lydia likes him also. This is an alien that lives on this planet they have crashed on. The warmth and special powers are used to save the people of this planet.

This book is wonderfully written and incredibly well done. I found this book to be a page-turner and it to be incredibly fascinating.

I had a great time....

Had a great time, not as much fun as the Veredian series but I’m glad I read it...
nothing new to add here really, sorry...
I just want Ms. Able to know she’s appreciated...
Liked the addition of the pet, wish we were going to see other Vados in Lydia’s world find a mate and deep sigh ,that the h wasn’t always soo young ...
I mean when it’s sci-fi or paranormal there’s NO reason for the heroine to almost _always_ be either a teenager or be in her early 20’s, mean come on between the H being centuries old and all the horrible/evil experiments done on her, why can’t she at least be in her 30’a for once ?
Minor niggles but would be a nice change....
Had a great time but Lydia and Kai felt soo mild compared to the MC’s in the Veredian books, don’t know I liked them but they just didn’t move me like the others...
But Thank you

Kai is the only one awake when Lydia, a survivor of a space ship crash, finds his city and explores it. He is almost made of ice and she is human with unique abilities.

Kai and his people have been trapped in a soul-less existence, with many people succumbing to a fatal depression. Enter Lydia, whose arrival is the hope of his people.

As Lydia learns to control herself, she and Kai bond. Their bond will be tested as more of his people are awakened.

The romance was a slow build with Lydia and Kai. It took time for them to get to the point of expressing attraction to each other even though we knew they were interested! I enjoyed Kai's way of showing Lydia that he cared and her way of giving Kai attention.

I'd love to try the riverfruit that Kai makes for Lydia.

How can it be over?! HOW?!!

I got started reading book three, and then I couldn't put them down. I have finished every. Single One. But now I'm wondering how I'm going to cope that I don't Valos of Sonhadra to read and dream about. The one thing I loved about this whole series the most was the selflessness of the main characters. They often pot themselves in harm's way, above and beyond what's reasonable, to help the Valos that helped them. Lydia was no different in this regard. She nearly killed herself to restore the heartstones to Kai's people. I absolutely recommend this series to you. I really think that you will enjoy it as much as I did. I borrowed this book through the Kindle Unlimited program.

I have read the entire series and Unfrozen being the last book in the series did not disappoint. No worries if you haven’t read all of the books or you haven’t read them in order, they can each be read as a standalone.
Unfrozen gives us another mating between just two Lydia and Kai, which is a bit of an anomaly for this series most are a reverse harem. I found the story of Kai and Lydia to be incredibly sweet and one that I thoroughly enjoyed. I loved Lydia’s bravery and courage she was one of the characters in the series which I liked the best.

This is the first book I’ve read by Abel, but I will be looking for more from her. I enjoyed her writing and loved her world and character building. I also enjoyed the HEA at the end of the story.

3.00 Stars. (BW/ Light blue Alien). Kindle Unlimited Edition e-book. The story is well written and the world of the aliens is described well. The story allows the romance to develop through the language differentiations, care and trust and sexual discovery. Sweet love story of overcoming very difficult obstacles. After being falsely accursed and convicted of killing her fellow townspeople using a chemical substance, the heroine, Lydia, a Black human is jailed in a planetary ship and experimented on like a human ginny pig. The ship crashes and Lydia lands on the alien planet of Sonhadra inhabited by a race of light blue ice being called Volas who are about to become extinct because they have had their hearts removed. After meeting and falling for Qaezul/ Kai, Lydia retrieves the removed hearts which allows the race of Volas to continue and for them to praise and accept her as Kai's life mate.

It was a cute read, but I didn't feel like the overall struggle to rescue all the heartstones from a magma pool and the final HEA for the FMC Lydia to be that thrilling or compelling. Frozen toddlers and adorable animal pets were introduced to pull on the heartstrings, but they didn't end up as a significant part of the action or story.

Iced is the sequel standalone to this book, and it follows the valo Duke for his HEA with another prisoner from the Concord.

My Favorite in the Series

I really liked this one. The h was brave but had limits to her gifts. The H is loving and supportive but never outshined h. I was also super touched at how the valos race came back to life. This story wasn’t just the survival of a couple/group but of the entire race. That was something that bothered me in past books. There’s no mystery to how the H/h’s community will grow. This story had me sad, happy, crying, touched, and cheering. Couldn’t have asked for more.
