ok ok oko okokoko. BEFORE you kill me for giving this anything less than 5 stars. hear. me. out. (then go ahead and run me over, I'll give you the gas money ;) __________ A Brief Summary of why Alex is being a little shit
I find it really hard to rate comic series that come out in installments. Furthermore, it becomes even harder when each installment contains 20-30 pages. It's hard because I rate them according to each comic.
So please don't get me wrong. I fucking love Fence, and I will honestly sell my left kidney for these boys.
But that goes without saying, that I did find this issue to be falling a bit further back than the previous. I felt like this was fundamentally a filler issue, and in all reality - the readers (well, me...) needed this issue to clear things up.
We got the basics of fencing, and the school life that encompasses the story. Usually, in written novels, authors usually embed that into the storyline, but because it's a graphic novel - you need to visually represent that somehow. It becomes a conundrum, because I really don't think that both the writer and the artist could have started by telling the background elements of the story - because, personally I got hooked on to the characters from issue #1.
Overall, I know I'm being harsh - but all I felt was that I wanted more...that it was lacking something
One thing that will never. ever. ever change is my love for every single character that C.S Pacat writes up. That beautiful, gorgeous brain of hers is capable of world domination. And in all honesty... how bad would the world really be if we had her as our leader?
We got a little bit about Harvard and Aiden and even Bobby and Dante. Most of all, we saw the brief moments shared between Seiji and Nicholas. My heart always ends up full when I finish a Fence comic, and I think that if I was being completely honest with everyone and myself. That feeling in itself deserves all the stars in the universe. (and multi-universes)
I’ve said it before but I feel like it’s pertinent for me to say it again: my rainbow heart is singing—bless you, woman! Lessons to take away from this issue ⤵
➊ Boarding School 101: Forget Privacy!
➋ Also forget: sneaking out, staying up, skipping class, vandalism, and depending on any partner in crime for that matter.
➌ Under no circumstances should you utter any sentence in the gym without first fully reading the wall—oh you sinful, lost soul, fear the coach’s wrath (and the captain’s lying smilessss).
➍ M’dear when you can’t your eyes off the guy there’s a high chance you’re crushing and crushing hard, oh yes.
➎ You bet the untouchable, brooding, high-and-mighty guy everyone is chasing will always find an unassuming underdog to become obsessed with.
➏ Most importantly: EVERYBODY’S GAY YAY.
Now that that’s established, I just need to ask something: how no how is it possible for this series to keep getting funnier??? I was dying from the humourous goodness plus the delicious dive into characters and their relationships—bewilderingly hilarious Tanner and adorably put-together Kelly, the loud energy-ball that is Boby and the quiet cuteness that is Dante, Aiden the playboy who should definitely come with a warning and who’s got my attention with Harvard the true leader...I am on board with all these ships thank you.
Pacat spends this issue introducing characters and their bonds while also teaching us a little about fencing (which I really appreciated), and with the chemistry that is revealing itself and the tension that is building up and up to a breaking point, I can confidently say this is my favourite of the first volume.
The stage is set. The players are here. We are ready to begin!
I loved that we got to know so many details in this one! Finally fencing was explained a little more and the relationships between the characters were broached and clarified more clearly.
For instance who rooms with whom and which ships to expect! And I gotta tell you, I’m on board with ALL of those awesome ships!!! <333
I love the friendship between Bobby and Nick and HA! Is it just me or did I finally glimpse some of the chemistry between Seji and Nick?! XD It’s obvious they admire each other, even though they’d never admit it! ;-P
Also: Aiden, that heartbreaker!!! Haha! Loved that we got to see one of his scorned lovers! But hmm is there something going on between him and Harvard?!
One of my favourite moments: “You want me to tell coach that we kissed and made up?”
As it seems this is developing into a “Tuesday Guilty Pleasure” of mine. *lol* Can’t wait to read the next volume!
P.S: I think I'd prefer the épée technique! No risk, no fun! ;-P
In many ways this was my favorite out of the three issues already out (but I feel like that's gonna be the case for every new issue).
I can't really make a coherent review this time but one thing I will say is that, if it wasn't already clear from issue #2, this is really fucking queer and what else do you need to know really?

¡Pobre Nicholas!
cries these graphic novels are TOO SHORT im so sad. I need more asap as possible.
QUICK SUMMARY if you don't know these graphic novels are about these boys who go to this boarding school for Fencing and only three can make the team this year and one of the boys Seiji is like, a prodigy Fencer and this other boy Nicholas got totally beaten by him once and now he's determined to beat Seiji but also I hear it's gonna be a m/m romance and ITS JUST SO GOOD AND CUTE AND FUN AND I LOVE THE CHARACTERS
Oh god! One thing is for sure and things are heating up real quick. The national tournament is coming and only 3 people are making the team. The question is who?
Undoubtedly, Seiji is going to make the team since he’s the second best fencer under 16 in the country. But I feel like he had some issues previous year and he seems to be battling some inner demons or a trauma. We don’t know. We will have to wait and see. Meanwhile Seiji is fascinated with determined and headstrong Nicholas. It’s definitely a frenemy situation.
And while Nicholas has strength and agility to become a top fencer, he lacks the technique and he only has 3 weeks to make up for his weak spot. And worse, he has to room with his archenemy (at least in his mind .. lol 😂) Seiji. He wants nothing more than to beat Seiji and make it to the national tournament but he has a long way to go.
And what a diverse team KingsRow has! I’m especially fascinated by Aiden, the playboy, and Robby, the crossdresser. Hopefully we will see more of those characters. Now I’m running off to read the fourth issue ASAP. 😁
"He's [Seiji] so good. He's so good it hurts. I'm so far ahead of you that I'm surprised you can see me at all." That's not it. It's more like... When he fences... You can't look at anyone else."
Ah, so satisfying.
Tryouts have begun and that means that we're getting closer to actually knowing makes the team and who goes home. Initially, I was pretty sure who was gonna be the ones in the team, now? I'm no quite so sure. Especially since we're introduced to all these hilarious and expansive characters.
Even though I laugh a lot reading these ones it always manages to break my heart a little bit, somehow, in each issue.
Was I supposed to be surprised that Nicholas' technique is not that good, or that he needs to improve if he wants to make the team? Well, I honestly don't think so. In either case, I'm always ready to see the underdog rise and become one of the best there is.
In other news, I think I have a little inkling of what are gonna be the ships and I'm pretty onboard with them. I mean, they would be so cute. _________________________
Annddd we're back. The chaos, romantic tension and drama continue. This time, everyone is training to be the best fencer they can be.
I don't have much to say because I basically feel the same as I did for the last issue. I cannot wait to say where these characters go and OMG, I am so excited for there to be more gay-ness.
Every issue gets better! The cliffhangers also get worse. I do have to admit though even if the wait kills me I look forward to this comic every month and it's nice.
In this issue the competition heats up and we get to know the ins and outs of Kings Row school. We finally meet Dante and more characters. The art was amazing as always and honestly this whole issue was hilarious. Bobby is so precious and Nicholas is still my favorite. Bobby & Nicholas BROTP is what I live for!!
Tanner & Kally are also becoming faves. Aiden is an asshole and I love him so much.
Overall amazing as always and I can't wait for issue 4.
oh my god REALLY????? that’s it???? this comic keeps getting better and better with each new issue, I need the next one right now 😩 P.S. let the gay begin! 🌈🙌🏽🎉😌
** I always had a weakness for stories that revolves around an underdog and his journey to prove his worth, something about them satisfy my whole being and that's why I'm so drawn to this graphic novel series.
** I love Nicholas and Bobby's interactions, their relationship has the potential to develop into a meaningful friendship.
** Finally we're getting some fencing, I've been waiting to see the characters compete between each other, I don't know why but I'm extremely fascinated by this sport and their dedication to it.
** And can I just say, their coach is such a cool character, I love the way she handles her team. she knows them, strengths and weaknesses and she understands what motivate them.
** The ending of Fence #3 left me so excited for the next issue, I'm going to be picking it up ASAP.
¡¡Nooooo!!
The competition is heating up as the boys of Kings Row School begin to battle it out for the top three spots on the fencing team.
We get to know a few more of the characters as the early stages of the in-school competition unfolds, and we get to witness a few more relationship dynamics between the boys, which will surely be fun to explore further as the series progresses.
I’ll mostly remember this third story as Fencing: 101 because this mostly served as a mini lesson in all the basics you’d need to know about the sport going forward. Where (some) other readers have been disappointed in this aspect of the story, I found it to be interesting and informative, particularly considering my utter lack of understanding before this point regarding the intricacies of fencing as a competitive sport.
Overall, another fun installment to what I’m sure will be quite an epic series.
It's interesting to get even more insight into why Nicholas wants to be great at fencing. I really feel for him having to basically relearn all of his techniques. There are quite a few lgbt+ characters in this series and that's lovely to see! I love Seiji! I'm so interested to see what happens in Nicholas' first bout!
Okay, this one was slightly better than issues #1 and #2- I'm still not crazy about it, but it seems the story is starting to rely on its potential and discovering how to use it.
I just wish for this Bobby kid to be less annoying- the character doesn't really add anything of importance to the story, it's just there to appear to be all cutesy and shit but it's just not happening. I'm startting to get invested in some of the other characters, at least: they are starting to appear a bit more interesting.
Overall it's sad cause I wanted to love this, but I can't see myself getting there, unless the progress is stable until, say, issue #10 or something. So far, it's all much less exciting than I had anticipated.
How can you end this issue like THAT?! And Seiji watching Nicholas' first match ~dies~ I seriously should have waited till at least 5 of them were already out before reading them, because I CANNOT HANDLE THE WAIT IN BETWEEN ISSUES!
