The past one month, it feels like I have lived in the chola period. In the first book, it took me sometime to get into the story but from there it has been a fantastic ride. At various points in the story, I have loved/hated the same characters, laughed with them, walked through deep dark forests, travelled to Srilanka, plotted with them, felt pity for characters I wanted dead from start, loved characters that I thought were inconsequential to the story. And what a story this is! Individual book ...more

One of my friends told me that this book deserves a place in our Pooja shelf... And after reading it I would say that its by no means an exaggeration..

Even translated this whole series of Ponniyan Selvan gets a 4.5 for plot, odd & diverse character development, and a sense of humor throughout! This is a -- in occidental comparison a chivalrous romance novel a la style de Dumas, but is set in the 10-11th century Southern India and has all the components of court/country intrigue, interior heart plots of vengeance and love, and lush scenery -- novel by Kalki a 20th century master of story telling & reformer of identity for Tamil Nadu & Tamils af ...more

Kalki is an amazing author to say the least! The end of the 4th book left a lot of unanswered questions. Since I had a little idea about the major events in Chola history, I was keen to see how Kalki would bring his vivid imagination into the historical events. Hats off to such a brilliant fusion of imagination and historical events! Initially the book felt a bit slow since the storyline wasn't focused on the charming & gallant prince Vandhiyathevan Vallavarayan. But he slowly builds up the sett ...more

The way it is written, we really are transported to the era the story is happening. It really made me feel that all the instances were happening around me.
It took me ten days to complete this "Emotional Ride". I couldn't sleep properly. I am writing this review immediately after finishing the novel. So I will not be able to say still how many days these characters and climax scenes are going to haunt me (in a very positive, painful and pleasura

Excellent book every tamil speaking person should read. If you can read Tamil, then please read it Tamil. From here onward assuming you are reading in Tamil. A captivating novel by Kalki that takes you places from India to Sri Lanka to the south and eastern islands. Extraordinary articulation of ancient times but at the same time using words that you can understand from current age. Everything is there, love, trust, obedience, betrayal, friendship, hate, anger, lust etc. Recommend to anyone if th ...more

On reading this entire 5 parts of this Ponniyin selvan, not a single moment I feel like I am reading. It was like I was watching a Movie. I was in middle of each scene.

Charaterisation, The flow of the story, The Storytelling technique, Creating a Ambience for each and every scenes, Portraying the great culture of Tamilians and so many things are just outstanding.

We can't guess a single story of what next and that is what makes this novel a Great Masterpiece!

Just finished the Ponniyin Selvan series. Phew! what a series! 2000+ pages 😓about the Chola dynasty. Amazing writing and the story is full of intrigue and mystery. If the translation is this good, I wonder how good the Tamil literature would be. The description of the places is literally so good, I am really hoping to travel to Tanjore and Sri Lanka and the complete route. The character building and the world building is excellent literally makes you time travel. My favourite character is the fl ...more

Too good to write a review on this epic! I can't begin to process where to start and where to finish. A book needs to serve a higher purpose beyond interesting characters, storylines, twists, and turns. Ponniyin Selvan finishes on a fantastic solemn note with Vanthiyathevan's character arc completing a full circle.

I had issues with the writing of the hero. He is just too good a person with no chink to point out. He is neither vulnerable except for the time he fell sick. I found other grey chara

The fifth book is where the entire architecture of the plot gets constructed. I would say the first four books where like a strong basement to an enormous plot. The first four books are points of a complex twisted web which gets neatly correlated and connected in the fifth book. I loved the entire series, though there were moments of slowness at some points of the book.
From the beginning of the story, Author Kalki have shown mercy to the main characters, when there were several times these main

It is a great Tamil historic novel. I would say that the author takes us to those days of Chozha Kingdom, which was one among the Greatest /Bravest Kingdoms in the world, in ancient times.
In fact i felt i was among those people in and lived life of them, till I complete all 5 volumes.
Such a great Author, Kalki. Everyone should read to admire this work of kalki.
It makes me feel great for being Tamilian and proud to say that we have such a great history.

I have never read such an engrossing, fast paced and heart ❤️ touching novel series ever. This novel series is an multi genre journey. I don't think any other work can beat this magnum opus by Kalki. He is rightly called AMARAR (Immortal)Kalki since you feel the presence of the author narrating the whole story.

Once engrossed into the story, it's difficult to put down all along the 300 odd chapters as there is always an expectation of what's going to happen next and

This book that this novel definitely deserves the credit of being magnum opus in Tamil literature. I was addicted to this book of series since it was entertaining, engrossing and styled adeptly glamorizing a variety of suspense and mystery. It reflects the history lively with flavored romanticism and portraying the required virtues of the Chozha Emperors that are to be followed by the leaders of our land at present and in future as well.

The Ponniyin selvan comes to an end with the last and final book. It was a magnificent journey. There are lots of twists and turns. The book had everything you need love, trust, betrayal, friendship, hate and revenge.

You feel sympathy for the same characters you hated once. Especially Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar is a misunderstood character. The bond between the brothers Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar and Chinna Pazhuvettaraiyar is full of love and respect. The highlight of the book as Kalki himself says i
