It is no easy joke to write a story chapter by chapter, week on week for 3.5 years to have a book that keeps you transfixed. When it is a historical fiction with real characters and fixed points recorded in history, it becomes a fascinating journey between 2 points! This book is a masterpiece by any standard you choose!

The last part in the series is full of action at each and every thread of the story. And how! The action starts with ponniyin selvan who we left in book 3 and sets the context for

Wow! Some jaw dropping stuff happens... Although I was expecting something to happen, the way it played out caught me off guard. So much drama and action has peaked to a thrilling, heart-rending climax. Can't believe there's still another volume yet to read.

Even translated this whole series of Ponniyan Selvan gets a 4.5 for plot, odd & diverse character development, and a sense of humor throughout! This is a -- in occidental comparison a chivalrous romance novel a la style de Dumas, but is set in the 10-11th century Southern India and has all the components of court/country intrigue, interior heart plots of vengeance and love, and lush scenery -- novel by Kalki a 20th century master of story telling & reformer of identity for Tamil Nadu &am ...more

Kalki is an amazing author to say the least! The end of the 4th book left a lot of unanswered questions. Since I had a little idea about the major events in Chola history, I was keen to see how Kalki would bring his vivid imagination into the historical events. Hats off to such a brilliant fusion of imagination and historical events! Initially the book felt a bit slow since the storyline wasn't focused on the charming & gallant prince Vandhiyathevan Vallavarayan. But he slowly builds up the ...more

A captivating novel by Kalki that takes you places from India to Sri Lanka to the south and eastern islands. Extraordinary articulation of ancient times but at the same time using words that you can understand from current age. I picked up Ponniyin Selvan on a whim. Following my interest in historical fiction, Kindle showed Ponniyin Selvan on my recommendation list. I knew it was a 5 volume set and a significant investment of time. The fact that the first two books were available on Kindle Unlimited pushed me towards it - and Pavitra Srinivasan's translation, a few pages in, ignited my interest immensely. Only later after reading other translations did I realize how wonderfully she has preserved what I perceive as the ...more

Ponniyin Selvan !! Chozha Empire's Game of Thrones !!
The Chozha throne is under a threat like never before. The reigning king is sick and bedridden( and probably house-arrested). A fallen Pandya king's close associates vow to avenge him by destroying the Chozhas; while some Chozha conspirators try to bring their own favorite to the throne. How Arulmozhi Varman (later known as Raja Raja Chozhan) beats these odds and sits on the throne, is narrated brillianly with a number of interesting reel and

Wow! Simply brilliant climax to a Magnum Opus

Landing a plot with such wide scope of characters and events built up over four previous volumes, and that with the additonal burden of handling historically well known figures is no mean task. Kalki the legendary writer does all this, all the while also keeping in sight the need to feed the readers' nail biting anticipation. What someone would call an apparently abrupt ending is also a mark of a great writer, imho. The grace with which he had acknow

Ponniyin Selvan is clearly a Masterpiece. The book tells the story of Arulmozhivarman, who later became the Chola king RajaRaja Cholan (Literally means King of Kings). The story starts with the King Sundara Cholan being Ill and bed-ridden. This news causes conflicts within the Chola dynasty in choosing the next king and led to Conspiracies to overthrow the King. Who became the king after Sundara Chola and what made RajaRaja one of the greatest king, is the end of the story.

Kalki has written the

A grand end to a modern epic. All the characters' arcs are (mostly) completed. The titular Ponniyin Selvan (Arulmozhi Varman) gets to play a big part in this volume. The badly misunderstood Pazhuvettarayar gets redeemed as a character and earns the readers' sympathy too. There are 2 places in the novel where my heart feels heavy during every reading. Both of them involve death and both of them occur in this book.
The part of history that the novel is based on, is mentioned in the afterword by Ka

I know that already thousands of people had reviewed this book. I cannot simply go without reviewing this. I have finished it but still I could not come out of the book. I am wondering about each and every line and characters. We cannot hate any of the characters. All the characters are described very well. Like everyone, I also liked 'Poniyin Selvan' who is the son of Ponni and others like Alvarkadiyan, Aditha Karikalan, Paluvettaraiyar, Nandhini, Vanathi, Poongulali and Senthan Amuthan. I love ...more

This is an excellent narration by Kalki. The plot is very gripping and unstoppable. One of the best stories I have ever read. His language skills are mind-blowing. He creates a virtual world in the reader's mind where we readers can live through. The characters live right in front of you, provides you with a better experience than watching a movie. You can not find not even single loopholes and logical gaps throughout the story. The very satisfying the historical fiction.

A historical romance set in the heyday of a South Indian Chola empire, it's a saga of intrigue and plotting, valour and ardour, love and heroism. With an extensive cast of characters that'll make your head spin, Kalki has woven an intricate but lovely tale that spans all of seven volumes. It took me almost a month to read - and it was extended pleasure.

A must read for all Tamils. It is a behemoth both in sheer volume of pages and reading experience it offers. Historical facts of chola dynasty blended with a fictional story. Just spare time for tamil extravaganza.
