Brazilian Acacia Santos excels at her job as concierge at the prestigious Hotel Victoire in Paris. When her senior colleague is attacked and sent to the hospital, she is tasked with serving one of the hotel’s most mysterious and attractive guests.

Nicholas Cassirer checks into the hotel under an assumed name every three months. Usually, he stays in the penthouse suite with a beautiful female companion but on this occasion, he arrives alone and is displeased in having to deal with someone new. A match of wits ensues as he tests Acacia’s expertise with a series of almost impossible demands. Her intelligence and creativity rise to the challenge, earning his respect.

They strike a tenuous accord until Acacia discovers a famous stolen painting in his suite. Compelled to report her discovery, she contacts a former boyfriend who works for the elite BRB, a unit of French law enforcement that deals with stolen art.

Nicholas is questioned by police and released when it is revealed the painting is a reproduction. Irked with her behavior, Acacia’s supervisor demotes her, threatening dismissal and the cancellation of her work permit.

But Acacia has already attracted Nicholas’s attention. Remorseful that she may lose her job on his account, he offers her a choice—she can wait until her supervisor dismisses her, or she can leave the city of lights behind and become his personal assistant.

Acacia initially refuses his offer, but Nicholas is persistent. He reveals himself as a man who quietly acquires stolen art in order to restore it to its rightful owners. Faced with mounting familial debts and the possibility of dismissal and deportation, she agrees to work for him.

Nicholas opens up a whole new world of beauty and intrigue to Acacia as they travel the globe. Soon the line between employer and assistant is blurred, and the two lonely people embark on a passionate relationship.

Secrets and danger abound as Nicholas and Acacia try to solve the mystery of a piece of stolen art. But Acacia may prove to be the most dangerous mystery of all.

I'm interested in the way literature can help us explore aspects of the human condition - particularly suffering, sex, love, faith, and redemption. My favourite stories are those in which a character takes a journey, either a physical journey to a new and exciting place, or a personal journey in which he or she learns something about himself/herself.

I'm also interested in how aesthetic elements such as art, architecture, food, drink, and music can be used to tell a story or to illuminate the traits of a particular character. In my writing, I combine all of these elements with the themes of redemption, forgiveness, and the transformative power of goodness.

His eyes burned through her, opening her, reading her soul.

I have been a die-hard fan of Sylvain Reynard ever since I read his ”Gabriel’s Inferno” series. I think I lost my mind just a wee bit over that series. It had such a strong impact on me that I was completely obsessed with it. What I know from having read several of Sylvain’s books is that he will always take us on exquisite journeys to some of the most exotic and romantic destinations and he did not disappoint with this one. We will journey to picturesque locales such as France, Greece, Russia, Dubai, and Geneva with the Hero and Heroine and their travels will be perilous, action-packed and there was a healthy dose of passion being generated between Nicholas and Acacia. But not only do we get a story filled with suspense and romance, we also get a bit of culture. It almost feels at times that we’re getting an art history lesson and let me just say that it didn’t bore me in the slightest. Sylvain’s writing is so cerebral and enchanting.

Nicholas and Acacia don’t have the best first introduction to each other but as the story progresses we learn that Nicholas is not who we first assumed him to be and that he is a very complex character. Acacia, too, is not the person she portrays herself to be and as her story developed I couldn’t help but admire her. She has got to be the strongest Heroine that Sylvain has ever created. She held on to her morality and loved with a fierceness that no one could ever extinguish. I did fall for Nicholas but I have to say that Acacia’s character shined just a little bit brighter than his.

Here are my overall ratings on the book:

Hero: 4.5
Heroine: 5
Plot: 5
Action: 5
Steam: 5
Chemistry Between Hero & Heroine: 5

THE MAN IN THE BLACK SUIT releases tomorrow. You will want to read this action-packed story filled with intrigue and delectable steam!

I'm sad to say, in the long run, I wasn't impressed with The Man In The Black Suit.

The blurb says it all. And by that, I mean really—everything interesting about this book lies in the blurb.
The synopsis with its promise of an intrigue set in Paris and revolving around arts piqued my curiosity. I’m equally curious and wary of any book set in my city, and although described accurately, it felt too much like the Paris only tourists want to read about. Personally, I’m over it but I can understand the appeal for readers interested to visit or intrigued by Paris.

I really thought I had a winner within my hands when I started The Man In The Black Suit. I felt charmed and intrigued by the hero and the mystery surrounding him. His presence so dominating and imposing, I was literally subdued by his persona. So much so, I devoured more than a third of this book solely driven by my desire, my need to figure out who was The Man in The Black Suit and how deep his connections ran, as he seems to be… almighty.

I appreciated how fierce and independent the heroine was. Acacia Santos was one hell of a woman and I especially enjoyed seeing her stands her grounds with intelligence against power and wealth in whatever form it appeared. Strong and driven she was honorable and honest through and through.

Veiled suspicions, tension and banter were delivered with gusto and I reveled in it.

I didn’t mind then how contrived things led Acacia to associate with the hero, it seemed everything she needed to hear to be reassured and encouraged in their journey as associates could be arranged by The Man In The Black Suit. Whatever the cost, Nicholas Cassirer could make it happen! I know, work of fiction, I should just suspend all disbelief and go with the flow, but it was really hard for me to keep my skepticism at bay. The man had more power than all European leaders united!
Forget Jason Bourne, James Bond and the likes. Nicholas’s life and tech resources was the stuff of legend. I grew tired—and paranoid— of his team sweeping every place for mics and recording devices.
I don’t believe Tom Clancy himself could have dreamed up a more resourceful and capable hero.

Despite everything happening and against Acacia better judgment—as she had secrets of her own, she took a leap of faith and accepted to follow Nicholas in his quest against art thieves.
Ensues nonsense after nonsense and non-issue after non-issue and I lost any concern I had for the main plot or enthusiasm to crack open The Man In The Black Suit.

Then the romance happened. Instantaneously. Out of nowhere.
And everything took an unexpected turn for me. I had no care at all for the insta-love the author tried to show without taking any care to build around it. It had this unequivocal feel about it.

The lack of connection between Acacia and Nicholas prevented me to believe anything serious was in the work—and yet, the hero started early on dolling out French endearments like he would address a lover of many years. His tone when addressing the heroine sounded so paternalistic it was disturbing.
Maybe for someone who doesn’t understand French, they can be received as cute, sweet and a proof of his affections. To me however, it just reinforced my opinion about a romance for show with very little substance and no meaning at all.
Their lovemaking read as formulaic, the romance was cheesy, which was not helped in any way by the use of saccharinely sweet French endearments. It was too much and not appropriate to their level of trust and intimacy.
I need to point out that I wouldn’t have believed possible for a man as refined as Nicholas to use "ma choute" to refer to his lover. I wouldn’t have the first idea how to translate it to you, it’s such a ridiculous and irritating word in French, but if you can think of the cheesiest, corniest word to address a lover, a word used by unrefined people, then that would be the word.

Details you'll say. Probably. It killed his character for me.

What I early liked about the heroine also started to irritate me.
I like an independent woman but you can accept help and stay true to yourself. She couldn’t make up her mind about what she wanted, help Nicholas, work for him, trust him, accept his money, decline his money, be his lover, accept his friendship, go back to Paris—where she’s well aware bad guys are waiting for her—, stay on the run… The list goes on and on and then turn in circle. She seemed to look for non-existing problems when they already had their fair share of unresolved business to take care of. Aggravating!
But wait, what were they going after in the first place?

Last but not least, as if Nicholas’ enemies all over the world weren’t enough, we’re graced by layers of super secret revelations from the heroine. I won’t disclose them but I’ll just say this : Major eye-roll. Especially since it gave the heroine a reason to create yet another…non-issue about hers and Nicholas different upbringing. Sigh.

My interest already on the decline, somewhere along the 50% mark I lost what little remained of it as it became clear to me that the author’s main intention was to make me travel and make a great show of his erudite skills with words, history and arts.
That is fine I guess, and yes, I enjoy learning new words, discovering new places and acquiring new knowledge about diverse subjects, but the pedantical show of knowledge thrown in this book failed to arouse my curious nature. Quite the opposite actually.

The author's prose was what I would call oddly particular. It felt pleasantly different from what I'm used to—at first— but became more and more tiresome and dare I say… pretentious to read.
I wondered if Sylvain Reynard was French himself, or what was his native tongue. The way he constructs sentences, his phrasing appeared stilted at times, wordy and not something I’m familiar with. It takes a while to acclimate to his writing, and I had to re-read some sentences many times to get their meaning right.

It was also confusing how the third person narrative would refer to Nicholas as "the guest" whenever he was in the hotel’s building. I would have understood it from someone from the staff, say, the heroine… But no, a third person narrative referring to characters in any other way than their names or pronouns is just strange. I don’t believe I’ve ever read something like this before.

A few statements here and there made absolutely no sense to me:
"She inspected the shampoo in the shower. The Arabic and French label declared it had been made in Morocco. Morocco. Of course she had no idea where she was in Morocco."

The heroine seems to deduce she’s in Morocco because… the labels says the product was made in this country. Good thing whomever this bathroom belongs to shops local because according to the label on the shower gel sitting in my shower, I’m currently in Germany. Not France. Interesting logic.

To conclude, I got excited about the premise and enjoyed the set up but too many things happening all at once and my inability to get accustomed to the author’s writing in the long run as well as crumbling characters made me struggle to enjoy the story past the first half.

I received an advance review copy in exchange for my review.

Acacia Santos works as a concierge at a luxury hotel in Paris. Educated at the Sorbonne and able to speak multiple languages fluently, Acacia takes pride in her position yet her past dictates her career choices and the need to remain fairly unnoticed. It isn’t until a high-profile guest at the hotel causes Acacia to act on instinct which leads to unexpected results.

“Our scars don’t define us,” she said simply.”

Nicholas Cassirer is a man of means and is driven by his need to obtain justice for his family. Getting entangled in the underworld has given Nicholas access to dangerous connections and valuable information but his search continues. During his stay in Paris, certain events occur that bring attention to his dealings.

“I think you saw the same spark in me, even when I was hiding who I was.”

Placed in danger, Acacia acts based on her moral judgment but what unfolds is much bigger than she could have expected. Not one to trust blindly, Nicholas exercises caution but goes to noble lengths to protect Acacia despite her independent ways. Leading to what they believed to be an unlikely union at first, Nicholas and Acacia forge a passionate path uniquely their own.

“I’ve been afraid for so many years, I’m not afraid anymore, not while we’re together. I’ve waited a long time for you.”

From the beginning, the established tone is prefaced upon contrasts in that there are good and unselfish acts benefitting many versus the immoral and egocentric acts that disrupt lives and communities. With this overlying concept, the decisions made by Acacia and Nicholas further examine such choices and how one person can make an impact either positively or negatively.

Told in third person, the plot points develop at a steady pace allowing the characters to solidify congruously. With the mask of mystery upon Nicholas, it’s unknown whether Acacia will sacrifice her principles or if Nicholas will achieve his final goal. While there are times when it seems a safety net is firmly in place, the plot pivots leading to another layer of details that deepens the story.

Nicholas is a noble character and shows an extremely gentle side with Acacia, but I also understood his vulnerability and deep need to exact vengeance. Acacia is a character that accepts her responsibilities and doesn’t eschew difficult choices. I liked her spirit from the beginning, and though she could be stubborn at times, her reasoning is justified. Hiding from her past wasn’t easy but when confronted with the reality, she rises to the occasion. The connection between Acacia and Nicholas is one steeped in respect and their romance is incredibly loving and full of chemistry.

The Man in the Black Suit is rich in complex issues ranging from racism, terrorism and stolen art/antiquities. Centered on the romance, these characters must confront serious obstacles to move forward. With a lyrical writing style, Sylvain Reynard successfully takes the reader on a rewarding journey with worthy characters. I recommend!

Acacia is a 35-year-old Brazialian woman working as a concierge in Paris. She's been in the city ever since she studied art at the Sorbonne. But she doesn't work in that field - we don't yet know why. And there's also something that happened to her in Amman years ago, something dangerous, that might come calling again.

Now she works at the Hotel Victoire where THE MAN IN THE BLACK SUIT is a very valued guest.

description

His usual concierge is not available, and now Acacia is responsible for him. Which should be easy - she loves her job and is very good at it. But Monsieur Breckman is a very complicated and interesting guest.

Too bad she kinda, accidentally, sent the police to his room, because she thought she saw a stolen painting there.

Getting guests arrested or questioned by the police is obviously a reason to get fired, or at least reason enough to get a serious warning. But she needs the money from her job - she's saving for her future - she wants to go back to working in art!

Enter Monsieur Breckman. He offers her a job - 'cause he kinda thinks he's responsible for getting her halfway fired....

Sexy Monsieur Breckman is not really who we all thought he is. Is he a criminal? Organzied crime? A detective? A cop? A treasure hunter? An art collector?

It will definitely be verrry interesting ... and dangerous working for him.

Dangerous for Acacia's life ... and her heart.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN WITH ACACIA & HER BLACK SUITED MYSTERY MAN?
WILL THEY GET THEIR HAPPILY EVER AFTER?
READ THE BOOK TO FIND OUT☺☺☺

YES!!!

I was a tiny bit scared that I wouldn't love it - don't ask me why, no idea! I was probably a tiny little bit afraid that there would be some paranormal moments in here - but nope! It's an amazing romantic suspensy kind of story.

And I loved it!!

description

It starts with this verrry exciting and heartbreaking prologue and you're immediately pulled into the story.

Then you meed Acacia and Nicholas and you just can't stop reading. You want to know how they will figure everything out, find the bad guys, without getting killed. And we want them to end up together ... to get their happily ever after.

Hurry the eff up eyes and brain and get me to the end of this book!!!! I need to know!☺

description

I really enjoyed reading it.

I don't want to spoil too much. The blurb is already long enough, so that you know what the whole thing is about.

It's a really beautiful and romantic and moving and artsy suspense story.

We have some very exciting and suspensy moments and some very adorable and sexy moments. We travel to so many beautiful places.

And I can't wait until Netflix or Passionflix will make a movie or series out of it!!! With all those beautiful locations and all the art and ugh. I need to see it.

There were some tiny little moments where I thought the book could've/should've been a little bit shorter. It wasn't boring or anything, but just a tiny little bit too much here and there.

And also, the love part. It kind of happened a bit too fast for my liking. Not fast as in the first pages. No, it took a long while to get there. But more like ... they hadn't seen each other that often before they were suddenly already halfway in love. It was a tiny bit weird. BUT - please don't let me scare you - I don't want to give you a bad feeling about the book. I REALLY loved reading it. It was amazing and beautiful and emotional and so ... real somehow. With lots of current world problems. But it was also a little bit like a James Bond/Jason Bourne fairytale. Ugh. I don't even know what I'm saying right now. ☺ READ IT!!!! ☺
THE MAN IN THE BLACK SUIT was an amazingly beautiful & moving Romantic Suspense story. Full of art & excitement & beauty & mystery & love & hope!

4 More Than Just a Love Story Stars
* * * * Spoiler Free
First, I wish all that are interested in this book to Please Read the Blurb...It sets up this tale better than anything I could ever do....and that is no surprise as it is told in exactly the way Sylvain Reynard writes...With every detail giving all the atmosphere and texture to become immersed in the world presented.

This is a stand alone...so we have a distinct beginning middle and HEA. Yay!
It is full of color, locations, amazing art works...some nods to past books and characters and most of all the sweeping romance between two people who seem at first opposites but actually carry the same burdens.

Reynard took many current world concerns of today and made them equal characters...it was as if it was important to consider all sides to the chaos we are experiencing. It is used not only as part of the story to give understanding for the characters but it also is there to challenge the readers ... to make us aware there is more to All Of Us then the caricatures we may have been fed by so many.

Each person in this story is an equal...Acacia Santos is as strong and capable as the man in the black suit, Nicholas Cassirer. They are perfect for each other because neither of them let the other play games...Oh, there are confrontations, stops and starts to their connections and finally romance...but there is the intense and immediate understanding between them... at first unspoken and then acknowledged... they are destined to be together no matter what.

This story has intrigue, suspense, hidden secrets not revealed and intense want between two grown adults. There is the descriptive beauty of all the countries and locations traveled, the love of art to the level we have come to expect and a romance that happens quickly but with a sure feel it is the real thing.

Nicholas Cassirer is cut from the Reynard cloth... when he loves his woman...he will tell her...He will stop at nothing to protect her and see to her wants and needs. He is appreciative of all she is and has experienced...He may make mistakes but is quick to amend them.

Acacia Santos is a woman who has her own secrets. She is well educated, a Brazilian Beauty and speaks 6 languages. She is not to be taken lightly. A sensual woman who sees the pain in this man and is not frightened by it. Her core beliefs hold her strong and she is a testimony to good over evil.

We are taken on this journey and I think those who are Sylvain Reynard fans will relish the tale.

~~~~~ Before Reading ~~~~~
Sylvain Reynard, we have been waiting...
We knew something was coming, but had no idea...
But now it is here and I can safely say...
I am all in for ....
And the award for the Most revealing blurb or all times goes to ... Luckily, I don't pay much attention to a synopsis. But really, what a terrible blurb, as if romance novels weren't repetitive, predictable enough, not to mention that we already know how they end.
Regardless, this was not bad for a contemporary romance. All the art talk made me shortsighted or longsighted to the cliches, although if I get overly analytical, even the art was cliche as it was mostly about Impressionists. But then, I'm not that original myself as I love the Impressionists, among many other art movements.
Anyway, it worked as a distraction, I gobbled it up in two sittings.
With just the right amount of intrigue, suspense and romance, The Man in the Black Suit reminded me why I fell in love with SR’s writing way back in 2012—he’s a culture lover’s dream taking us to some of the most beautiful places in the world whilst at the same time creating characters who work their way into your affections as the story progresses.
description We create something together we don’t have apart.”
So much about these characters and their story appealed to me, from Acacia’s fierce independent nature to Nicholas’ personal torment and protective side, and I adored how he never stifled her but appreciated her strength, mind and heart. And together they lighten the loads life has placed on them.
description Feel how we fit together. It’s perfect.”
And that, my friends, pretty much sums up how I felt reading this.
Sylvain Reynard is one of my favorite romance authors of all time and it's an automatic read for me whenever he publishes a new book. His romance novels are intricately written and always deliver a passionate, heartfelt and swoon-worthy romance. The Man in the Black Suit was his latest romantic suspense standalone novel and it's one of my highly anticipated releases last year but I didn't have a chance to read it. Once again, he didn't disappoint me but I have little issues with it.
Acacia Santos is a Brazilian concierge at Hotel Victoire in Paris, France. She's beautiful, well-educated, intelligent and hardworking. She's a woman with substance and class who's passionate about art and fluently speaks multiple languages. At work, she gives her best to serve and assist her clients. When her senior concierge was attacked by an unknown assailant and was brought to the hospital, she temporarily filled in his position. One day, she meets a highly valued client in black suit.
Pierre Breckman / Nicholas Cassirer is a rich and mysterious man with multiple connections. He doesn't easily trust people and values his security. He's a man on a mission to avenge his sister's death and retrieve stolen art works owned by his family and others. Supposedly, Marcel is going to assist him. Instead, he meets Acacia and he's intrigued by her beauty and wits. They had misunderstandings and both of them were equally challenged.
Acacia thought Pierre/Nicholas stole art works and tipped her ex-boyfriend who works at a law enforcement about it. Her accusations turned out false and Nicholas was free from charges. As a consequence, her supervisor demoted her. She's walking on a thin line of losing her job but she earned Nicholas's respect. He offers her to become his assistant and explained to her clearly his mission. After a while, she accepted his offer and they worked as a team.
I enjoyed the story and the characters are well developed and likable. Acacia is a strong and respectable heroine. She's headstrong throughout the novel and doesn't take advantage of other people's fortune. She wants to earn through perseverance and she stands with her beliefs and morals. I admire her genuineness and value of humanity. She enlightened Nicholas about obtaining justice in different ways and killing won't solve anything. Nicholas is a selfless, protective and noble man. He promises to bring justice to those who murdered her sister and as long as the suspects are on loose, he's not going to stop until he finds closure and peace. Both characters are complex and impressive on handling their conflicts.
I love Sylvain Reynard took his time building up the plot and romance. The romance between Acacia and Nicholas was passionate, fierce and slow burn. They opened up about their past and work on their differences and slowly earn trust with each other. Acacia's past was a subplot and it made the book more intriguing. I love the setting was incredibly detailed and atmospheric. Simply reading this book, I was taken to places I haven't visited like Paris, Santorini, Dubai, Cologny etc. Hoping one day I'll travel to these beautiful places.
Here are my minor issues with this book: The story was little prolonged and I want more thrill. I don't mind gradual paced books but for a romantic suspense, I was expecting more excitement that will give you the adrenaline rush. If you're going to ask me, this has more romance than suspense. Lackluster ending. Don't get me wrong, I'm okay and satisfied with the closure but it just fell flat. Overall, it's a greatly delivered standalone novel.
Nicholas is on the hunt for the killer of his sister and the people who stole precious art from his family. He is determined to bring them to justice, HIS justice.
Acacia is hiding a secret and is always looking over her shoulder. She is careful and calculating. While working as a hotel concierge, she comes across a wealthy man who is charming and good looking. He is intriguing and appears to be hiding a secret, too.
What was built on lies, turns into mutual admiration and attraction. Can he forgive her for her lies and can she forgive him for his truth?
'The Man in the Black Suit' was intriguing, mysterious and held quite a bit of steam. The issue for me was the length of the book. The storyline dragged. Much of what I read felt like filler. I think the purpose was to develop the relationship between the two main characters, but it ended up boring me instead. Having said that, I was dumbfounded as to why Nicholas wanted a relationship with Acacia, the insta-attraction didn't seem to be based on anything. I found myself skimming because I wanted to get to the story arc, to the grit of the story!
2.5 Stars - it was an okay read.
I knew this book would be awesome, but my expectations were blown away by reality! Is there a comparison term for awesome? If not, I will create it for “The Man in the Black Suit” by Sylvain Reynard. My immense love and devotion for this author began when reading the “Gabriel Inferno” series and after that I was hooked. Then came “The Florentine” series and my obsession became deeper. When Sylvain announced the release of a new book in December, I thought that time wouldn’t go fast enough for this book to be mine, but what do you know? I have it and I am extremely happy to end my bookish year with this type of reading.
Ever since seeing the author’s autograph on the first pages of the book, I knew this would be an adventure, and boy did I was right. I could say without a doubt in mind that this book is one of the best Sylvain wrote and perfection was reached with all its glory.
Acacia is a concierge in The Victoire Hotel in Paris. She is extremely educated and in the first chapters of the book I wondered why she chose this profession with the amazing potential she obviously has. There she meets a mysterious man that manages to catch her attention. Throughout the next chapters of the book, this relationship will change very much, leaving Acacia to rely on Nicholas (this is his name, by the way), and discover feelings she thought were forbidden for her. This is the closest I get to spoilers, because every word that I say would give away the plot. What you need to know is that Acacia will be implicated in a very complex situation that regards art, theft and art black market, and Nicholas will protect her, falling in love in the process.
Acacia and Nicholas stole my heart, both as individuals and as a couple. Acacia is such a strong heroine, independent, smart and trustworthy. She is far from naive and Nicholas had to work hard to gain her trust. She is capable of taking care of herself, but there are times when you need someone by your side, to guide you through bad times. Nicholas changed Acacia’s word and made her open up to her past and reasons why she wanted to keep secrets.
Nicholas is also a tormented man, having lost his sister year ago in a robbery gone sideways. His whole family was devastated by this events and he swore to find the culprits. He dedicated his life to this cause and became involved with different circles and institutions to get back stolen art pieces. When destiny brings him to Acacia, he knew she will help him in more ways than one and throughout the plot they will discover each other.
This is a slow burn love story, which began initially with loathing and misunderstandings, but eventually led to something big, that clicked so well. Their relationship is intense, passionate, because both of them are stubborn people with great personalities. Together they make full circle, completing and showing each other the right path. They will accept each other, bot physically and emotionally and for me nothing could get better than this love story. It is a healing and forgiving lesson which everybody was to understand and why not, apply in real life.
What it is to love in this book? Where to start from? Begin with the penmanship. Sylvain is amazing. This inteligent writing style gave me the chills and I just love it every time he describes or used elevate words, because you could feel the research and attention behind every word. Nothing is put there accidentally, everything is calculated, inserted to create the maximum effect.
The places Sylvain brought the readers were amazing and described so well, you were actually there with the characters. Every detail was crafted to perfection and I couldn’t find a better narrator for Dubai, Paris or Santorini to show me around. Even if the narration was made at the 3rd person, nothing was lost, on the contrary, I believe I understood things better in this perspective.
The amount of details that made the plot were overwhelming and I was blown away by all the information gathered there. From politics, to religion and art, this is a 300 and something lesson that will enrich your vocabulary and mind.
The plot was extremely intelligent, dynamic, romantic and exciting, leaving me to read chapter after chapter with anticipation and curiosity. Sylvain Reynard, if you are reading this, I loved this book and congratulations for your amazing talent and devotion to your readers. Your passion trespasses the written word and I could feel every emotion coming from your lines. Never give up on writing for us
5 stars!!
You know you’ve been well cared for by your favorite author when your first reaction to the announcement of a new book is something like, “What do you mean it’s a stand alone?”
This was my initial dilemma with “The Man in the Black Suit” by Sylvain Reynard. Over the years, I’ve become invested in the literary worlds created by SR. I immerse myself in the settings with wanderlust. I’m challenged to learn more about art, literature, and religion. I fall in love with the most amazing fictional men (both human and supernatural). And I always get to do so over the course of a trilogy. This is how we roll.
So, I’ll admit that I began reading this book with a bit of childish hesitation. There was never a question if this novel would be good. I simply wondered if one book about Nicholas Cassirer and Acacia Santos would be enough to satisfy me.
What became obvious within a few chapters is that SR’s writing has a hit a new level of intensity with “The Man in the Black Suit”. There is a compelling boldness to Nicholas and Acacia. He is noble, but mysterious and seeking justice. She is tough, but compassionate and seeking peace. They are each cunning in their own way, but neither are motivated by vice. Even so, they must each decide what lengths they will go to achieve their deepest desires. And the ultimate question is whether these decisions will bring Nicholas and Acacia closer together, or drive them apart forever.
SR has always been an exceptional storyteller, but as a long-time reader I also recognize that the author has done something new with this novel. Rest assured, all the elements we admire about SR’s books can be found in this story, but various boundaries have also been pushed and it made for a thrilling read.
There is an abundance of everything in this novel – intelligence, culture, humor, political and spiritual intrigue, suspense, romance and, yes, great sex.
Would I love to read more about Acacia and Nicholas? Of course.
Was I ultimately satisfied by The Man in the Black Suit? Oh yes.
Undoubtedly, one of my favorite reads of the year, and one of my favorite Sylvain Reynard books to date.
The Man in the Black Suit is a contemporary romantic suspense novel written by Sylvain Reynard. It's full of intrigue, mistrust, interesting identities, culture, violent art thieves, action/suspense, and a lovely romance. Written as a standalone novel (rare for Reynard), there is enough world building to launch a series of companion novels...but sometimes it's nice to have an open and closed reading experience. Well-done Sylvain Reynard!
My favorite quote:
“Do you think if someone does the right thing for the wrong reason the action is still right?” “That sounds like a question for a prophet.” “What about doing the wrong thing for the right reason?” His eyes focused on hers. “That question is easier to answer. I think it's clear wrong actions are wrong even if you have good intentions.” “Why?” He came a step closer. She took a deep breath. “Because the rhetoric of racists, terrorists, and those that commit genocide always claims good intentions ... Perhaps the real problem with the world is self-deception. People have evil intentions believing them to be good.”
For some they found this book boring, but not I.
I love this book. Sylvain Reynard has a way with words, a way no author has ever made me feel.
He is one of the most talented authors I have had the pleasuring of reading!
His books are simple yet so detailed, real yet so magical. He captures my heart, my soul, my imagination, and my whole being.
I love a book that is filled with information I did not know, that has detail and talks of history, love, religion and art...it makes the book timeless, beautiful and intriguing all while learning something new.
This whole book is the very definition of imperfectly perfect.
“He who saves one soul, it is as if he has saved the whole world.”
When The Man in the Black Suit, the new standalone romantic suspense from Sylvain Reynard, hit our Kindles, we knew immediately, it had to be our next read! We’ve always found this author to be a master storyteller, with a passion for art, landscape and words which is beautifully crafted and conveyed through his stories, as he captivates and immerses us into his world.
Sylvain Reynard states he is “interested in how aesthetic elements such as art, architecture, and music can be used to tell a story or to illuminate the traits of a particular character…” and it shows! His passion is without question, as he draws us into the story with his impressive and visually resplendent world building, creating a setting that feels so real, it’s as though we’re witnessing the majesty of the scenery and the beauty of the surroundings first hand through the eyes of the characters.
“How can you love me?” Nicholas whispered
“How could I not?”
A thrilling and painful quest for revenge, and a need for justice provides the background for Acacia Santos and Nicholas Cassirer’s love story. Both from very different worlds, yet with an underlying thread that would see their worlds collide with action packed, emotional and heart stopping consequences.
Acacia Santos, a strong, intelligent statuesque Brazilian beauty who longed for honesty and intimacy, was a fabulous kick arse heroine and a perfect match for the commanding and mysterious Nicholas. She more than matched wills with him on many levels and it was exceptional to witness!
“You have my heart, Nicholas. I don’t want it back.”
Nicholas Cassirer, oh be still our beating swoony hearts! Nicholas was an imposing, masculine world wise man cloaked in a shroud of mystery and secrecy who kept us guessing right up until the very end. Who was he and how did he wield such power and maintain such influential contacts?
“I like to hear you laugh.” Nicholas tightened his hold and brought her chest again his. “Look at those eyes. A man could get lost in those.”
We couldn’t put this book down, consistently held captive by Acacia Santos and Nicholas Cassirer’s thrilling, passionate, intoxicating, poignant, suspenseful and heart grippingly romantic story. We devoured every word, becoming agitated when real life demanded our attention, eagerly counting the hours until we could once again return to their heart stopping action packed quest.
“This is worth fighting for,” he groaned
“Yes.”
Everything you need to know about The Man in the Black Suit is in the synopsis. All the elements we mentioned above need to be uncovered and experienced by sinking between the pages of this book. Oh, and, Hollywood needs to snap this book up! What a magnificent movie this would make!
‘I love this man. I can see his heart and soul in his eyes, and I don’t ever want to be without them.’
Sylvain Reynard beautifully builds this story, testing us, teasing us, engaging us and taunting us with his poetic words, thrilling and suspenseful storytelling and strong likeable characters, whilst integrating current world affairs into the mix, and in doing so, sending a powerful message and food for thought.
The chemistry sizzles, the mystery fascinates, the story never became over dramatized, maintaining a pace that held us transfixed from start to finish! What a read indeed from an author who never disappoints.
ARC received for an honest review
Sylvain Reynard is one of my must read authors. It has been a while since we have had a new book, however it is worth every second of the wait.
We are again swept away in an epic story of love, mystery and intrigue.
This is the story of Nicholas and Acacia. Their world's couldn't be further apart, but at the same time overlap.
I adored Acacia right from the get go. I love that she is strong and sassy and takes not crap from anybody. I love that she also wants nothing from anyone and stands on her own.
Nicholas, well he is one that it took me a while to warm up to, but once I did... *fans myself*.
It also took a lot of time for me to feel the connection between our lovelies, though I could feel their passion right away. Might have just been my frame of mind when I was reading though.
Their commitment to their secrets has to be admired too - even when it causes more dramas.
Reynard takes us on a whirlwind world tour with The Man In The Black Suit. Mostly set in beautiful Paris, we just never knew where they would end up next.
Reynard writes with such beautiful imagery , that you can't help but get swept away and can feel yourself in each new city. I felt like I travelled to half of Europe without even leaving my couch.
Dark, intense and mysterious, I didn't want The Man In The Black Suit to end.
Can't wait to see what we get next.
I know that I'm going to be in a minority with this review, but personally I'm disappointed with the story.
The story is supossed to be a romantic suspense;but it seemed to me like a criminal story with some sex scenes. So, I did not find chemistry between Nicholas and Acacio, the story turned from stolen painted masterpieces in one chapter, to the the holy war in the next one,(that actually happens in reality and this was the last nail in the coffin).
When I am reading the story IN this genre, I want to forget about the outside world and the reality that is happening around us, and not that I am even more worried after reading so called romance.
~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~
Mr Reynard is a consummate storyteller and this is another wonderful novel from his pen. I cannot admit to how many times I have read the Gabriel trilogy, but I can say that this will also be added to my 'Must re-read' list.
I read it from cover to cover without pause - well I think maybe a comfort break, but it was in the room with me! I was totally captivated by both Acacia and Nicholas, and as the layers upon layers were revealed, they became all the richer.
This is a thriller, wrapped around a love story, inside a tragedy, or two. It is beautifully paced, and skillfully plotted. It is also incredibly passionate and intensely romantic. From the very first scene in the museum, the tension rises, and we are again under Mr Reynard's spell. The revelations, which if handed out in the first chapter would shock and confuse, instead are given at a rate with which we can forgive, understand and even rejoice.
It is only fair to give a mention to Rick, and to Nicholas's mother, who are unexpected heroes in the tale, alongside the couple - and now I feel guilty for not mentioning Kate, Claude (the cat) and Luc...
Highly recommend this lovely story - but make sure you have a free window, as once you start ... you will not want to stop.
This may just be me, i could not read on after the 60%-ish mark..once i found out her secret.. The first 60% was REALLY good! I loved the mystery surrounding the hero and I loved how intensely he felt for the heroine. BUT, the heroine had a pretty odd secret, one i did not care for. It became a religious issue and i just skimmed through till the end.
** ARC provided by the author for an honest review **
Sylvain Reynard latest novel is a foray into romantic suspense titled, The Man in the Black Suit and it is an adventure you do not want to miss.
Nicolas Cassirer has a routine of checking to the Hotel Victoire every three months under an assumed name and with eye candy on his arm. Coincidence or perhaps fate, has him checking in alone and he is left to deal with a new concierge. Acacia Santos matches Nicolas in wit and earns his respect quickly, until she makes a rash judgment. Demoted and in risk of losing her job, Nicolas offers Acacia the job of his personal assistant. It is the opportunity of a lifetime and hard to resist, much like the man himself.
Between my short synopsis and that of the blurb you really don’t need much more to know what this is about. The story line is laid out plainly, but it is the intensity of the characters that make this book. As you expect Nicolas has a mysterious persona and has secrets that Acacia is left to discover, but the same goes for her. She has a past that has made her the strong and passionate woman that grabs Nicolas’s attention.
The characters, the story and the culture in this book are interwoven and wonderfully written in intriguing detail. Paris and other mentioned cities are places that I would love to visit in person one day, but Sylvain’s writing made it seems as if I was there already. After reading I felt that I, along with Acacia, had traveled with Nicolas and experienced these romantic and charming landscapes.
This book is different than the Gabriel series that initially made me a fan, but it contains the same detail and emotion. This romantic suspense will captivate you and have you fully in Nicolas and Acacia’s corner. I highly recommend taking a chance of this novel. Five stars.
Well, the truth is: I was bored out of my mind with this book! I even considered abandoning it and move on to another book..
I'm like highly disappointed, after waiting for this book for over a year, I'm rewarded with this? What the hell did I just read? The book was a mess tbh, it felt like the author gathered every information and history class he's ever learned and splashed them all over this book which is not artistic nor fascinating at all, my mind tried to keep up with all the so confusing informations and all the traveling from Paris to Dubai to Greece to Switzerland to Finland, ITS A ROMANCE BOOK for crying out loud, not some tourist guide..jeez.
Anyway, as if everything I've mentioned isn't enough, the story takes another turn with the heroine's believes.. Just a piece of advice for the author: Stick to romance please and leave religions aside.. Okay? He made a show of explaining the holy Qur'an.. Sorry I'm not being rude but that was really not necessary, and he added salt on the wound by involving terrorism and linking it to an Arabian, like couldn't the terrorists perhaps be Europeans, Americans, Asians or whatever other nationality? That was extremely rude tbh..
And let's not start with the French words ughhh Ma choute??? What the hell were you thinking ? If somebody called me that is be shooting daggers at them.. It's just ew.. So cheesy and just nope. And there were other words the heroine was called of that makes you think they were lovers since forever not some 1 month old relationship, it was dull and there was absolutely no chemistry nor any connections between them.
I think I'll stop here, this books was a mess for me and I was really confused and bored while reading it and it just didn't do it for me! After waiting for such a long time I was expecting something big but then again this happened and well, I think I'll be moving to the next book!
What a wonderful, emotional and geographical journey Sylvain Reynard took me on with this incredible, well written story. From Paris to Geneva, Santorini and the Middle East, the Man in the Black Suit is full of mystery, suspense, intrigue, romance, beauty, art and love. I was totally captivated by this story, from the beginning to the end.
You will fall in love with the two main characters. Acacia Santos is a strong, independent, courageous and beautiful young woman who endured pain and trauma in her past and is now trying to build a new life for herself in the beautiful city of Paris.
Nicholas Cassirer is a man of mystery whom Acacia meets whilst she is working as a concierge at a Paris hotel. Nicholas is tall and dark, with a lean, athletic form. He is nearly always seen dressed in one of his “ubiquitous” black suits. He too knows about pain and loss. He has flaws, but he has a beautiful soul. He has had something stolen from him and he wants justice. Nicholas, in my view, is a genuine hero.
This book is outstanding to say the least. There are numerous messages SR delivers to his readers in this book; about the importance of being charitable, showing kindness and not hatred, and that imperfections can be invisible when you take the time to look inside and see a person’s inner beauty.
I enjoyed this story immensely. I loved the dialogue between Acacia and Nicholas and the love scenes are exquisite!
Another character I grew a fondness for by the end of the book was Rick. A loyal employee and good friend.
What more can I say. Sylvain Reynard has done it again. I have always found his writing to be lyrical and flawless. The Man in the Black Suit is no exception. Sylvain Reynard delivered with this incredible story, as expected, because this book is everything I was hoping for, and more.
5 perfect stars!
