Parmi ses plaidoyers il en est un qu'il publia jurenali cupiditate glo riac (vii, 2, La cause était vulgaire un certain Nevius Arpinianus était accusé d'avoir tué sa femme, qui était tombée par la fenêtre; il soutenait qu'il y avait accident, et non pas crime. Ce qui donnait de l'intérêt à l'affaire, c'est que sous Ti hère, le prêteur Silvanus avait tué de cette façon sa femme Apronia et que la sagacité de l'empereur avait dejoué sa dé tense Il y avait là un beau sujet de controverse, comme on en traitait journellement dans les écoles l'empressement de Quint. À publier son oeuvre et à la citer plus de vingt ans après, laisse à croire qu'il obtint l'acquittement. Ce fut, du reste, le seul plaidoyer qu'il publia jamais mais il en courait d'autres dans le public. Des sténographes {notarii} les relevaient aux débats avec une exactitude douteuse et en faisaient commerce. Quoique Quint. S'en plaigne, il y a là un hommage flatteur, que des avocats du commun n'eussent pas obtenu, que des esprits frivoles eussent prévenu par une publication volontaire.

Das Buch war in der Leseliste meines (leider mittlerweile abgebrochenen) Lateinstudiums. Damals habe ich es mir besorgt, allerdings nicht gelesen. Hätte ich das mal getan!
Das Instituto oratoria (jedenfalls Buch X) sollte Pflichtlektüre für jeden Studenten (im ersten Semester) sein. Quintilian behandelt hier auf jeden Fall einige Probleme und auch Methoden, die auch den heutigen Schüler bzw. Studenten noch plagen. Sei es der perfektionistische Student, der seine Arbeit nicht abgibt, weil ihm kein perfekter Einleitungssatz einfällt, sei es der Informatiker, der sich nur nachts im Dunkeln so richtig konzentrieren kann, Quintilian kennt das Problem und weiß guten Rat.
