Benhabib provides a compelling contribution to the broad dilemma between the universality of human rights and the contemporary adherence to the norms of Westphalian state sovereignty (however complex such adherence may be). The best outline of her theory for how universal human rights can be in harmony with Westphalian state sovereignty is found midway in the book where she notes that human right's norms are concepts, which through democratic deliberation, are conceptualized and afforded legitim ...more

Really interesing read, but in need of a comprehensive editor! I know the way that academic books can be compiled from a series of previously-published articles and talks, and I'm definitely not opposed to it, but too much of Benhabib's content is obscured by the lack of a clear sense of direction through the book, and some early repetitiveness led me to want to skim past ideas that should have been highlighted.

Seyla Benhabib is a Turkish Jewish professor of political science and philosophy at Yale, and director of the program in Ethics, Politics, and Economics, and a well-known contemporary philosopher.
