To Every Age Its Art
When traditional craft met blossoming modernism

Discover turn-of-the-century Vienna in this exploration of its most important protagonists, complete with sumptuous double-page reproductions across painting, sculpture, architecture and design, as well as an essay by Rainer Metzger. Marking the centenary of the deaths of masters Klimt, Schiele, Wagner, and Moser, this collection joins the Austrian capital in its 2018 celebration of modernism.

"In most cities, the streets are paved in asphalt--in Vienna, they're made of culture."

Beautiful art and great context but written in such a needlessly confusing way. If you read this book you will be faced with sentences such as:

‘Mahler is one of the figureheads of the cult of art as it was expressed in the ardour of totality and the intimations of eternity’

And

‘The demands for tastefulness and individual quality in the furnishing of sentences as well as spaces had to be set out from the individual case. The generalised examples of purism and the fighting spirit could then be derived from this unique appearance’.

It’s a shame because the art seems to be well selected - see for example Madame D’Ora’s ‘Emperor Charles I of Austria with His Family, 1917’, a lesser known but impressive photograph which immediately follows Klimts’ masterpiece ‘Death and Life’ in the book - and the context is very interesting. But be prepared to be frustrated and have to re-read, maybe several times, in order to understand it.

I want to give this 5 stars. It deserves it. But readers and buyers - and the publication house - needs to be very aware of the fact that this stunningly-designed tome's spine fails simply by opening the book. No matter how many times it's replaced, the same problem. And what a huge error that should've been considered before publishing, because this is every lover of this era and this country's history dream.

3.5 stars, either poorly translated or deliberately filled with weirdly articulated, obfuscating prose.

Un libro con un potenziale molto interessante, purtroppo scritto male e organizzato logicamente anche peggio.

Alta qualità di stampa e delle opere proposte.
