Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) was an American writer, editor, creator of comic book superheroes, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.
With several artist co-creators, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor as a superhero, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Daredevil, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, The Inhumans, and many other characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. He subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.
Pure, unadulterated nostalgia, only gets the four stars because of the comprehensiveness of what's included here. Everything from the original FF "cow hypnosis" storyline to the beginnings of the reveal on Secret Invasion is here, including the five-issue Captain Marvel limited, some random Silver Surfer and other weird stuff, and the FF/Avengers Annual crossover with elements of "Man in The Iron Mask" and "Casablanca." Good stuff, not all brilliant. The Skrulls are too prevalent a part of the Marvel U to be completely included here, but this does a good job without being a phone book. It's still kind of a phone book, but whatever.
I read this collection of Skrull Marvel comics in anticipation of the Secret Invasion TV show on Disney+. And I’m glad I did! It was a sweeping anthology with stories from the early days of Fantastic Four up to Carol Danvers stint as Ms. Marvel. I’m not a fan of the super oldies, apparently, as they are constantly literally referring to other comics which takes you out of the magic.
