The Complete Darkest Powers Tales

Rate this book
This full-length anthology of novellas and short fiction complements the Darkest Powers and Darkness Rising trilogies, adding new dimensions to the characters and their stories. Dangerous returns to Derek and Simon’s past and tells how they came to be at Lyle House. Divided continues Derek’s story, filling in his adventures with Simon while separated from Chloe. In Disenchanted, Tori takes center stage as she travels with Simon after Chloe and Derek go missing. In Facing Facts, Chloe helps Tori deal with the truth about her parents. Derek faces family issues of his own in Belonging, when his werewolf clan comes to claim him. The New Guy and The Invitation switch over to the Darkness Rising series, giving a peek into the lives of those characters before their world is upended. All the characters come together for Atoning, set after the two groups of teens have converged and face a new adventure in their lives together.

About the author

Kelley Armstrong

290 books33.5k followers
Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers' dismay. All efforts to make her produce "normal" stories failed.

Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves, while safely locked away in her basement writing dungeon. She's the author of the NYT-bestselling "Women of the Otherworld" paranormal suspense series and "Darkest Powers" young adult urban fantasy trilogy, as well as the Nadia Stafford crime series. Armstrong lives in southwestern Ontario with her husband, kids and far too many pets.

The Complete Darkest Powers Tales ~ Kelley Armstrong
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I loved how we got to see other's P.O.V.
Dangerous was very interesting, showing how Simon and Derek ended up in Lyle House. I loved to see Derek's P.O.V., and what he was thinking.
Divided was pretty good, also in Derek's P.O.V.. What I found sad and adorable at the same time was how he'd seem to get sort of jealous about how Chloe and Simon seemed so close, and he kept telling himself that it's because they liked each other. Funny how things turned out, huh?
Disenchanted was good. It starts off in Simon's P.O.V., but Tori soon takes over. It tells what happened with Simon and Tori while Chloe and Derek are trying to find their way to Andrew's house and back to Simon and Tori.
Facing Facts seemed kind of rushed, but it was okay. It starts off a month after Chloe and Derek get together. Kit decides to tell Tori the truth about him being her father. Told in Chloe's P.O.V.
Belonging was my second favourite. It's in Derek's P.O.V again, two months after Facing Facts. Derek is trying to think of an idea for his and Chloe's three month anniversary, while the Cains are searching for him.
Atoning was my favourite. It takes place eighteen months after everyone escapes the Edison Group, and they now all live in Badger Lake. Someone from their past comes back, trying to lure them out, telling them Badger Lake is dangerous. It gets more into Chloe and Derek's relationship, and how they've grown, making decisions for their futures.
I haven't read The New Guy or The Invitation, and I'm not sure when I'll read them, but I bought this book for The Darkest Powers kids.

I was a big reader in the 2010s, and the DP/RP were one of my favorites, I actually would call it my top2, with the mercy thompson as numb1
these days I decided to make an account here to keep track of my old stuff while also trying to continue those series after I switched to kdramas

so here I am almost 10 years later, I'm not sure if I had read the short stories before, some had severe dejavu vibes, while it was also so hard to remember most details, I did remember Chloe and derek's story more than maya's though now all grown up i kinda vibed with maya more but I keep my adoration of cutie pie Chloe who could more than protect herself and her friends

anyways it felt like a good nostalgic read regardless, and I saw there's another short story for chloe and derek, which I most probably haven't read before, so I'm off to read that~

Dangerous 4.5 stars
Derek's POV. The story about how Derek and Simon ended up at the group home. Set a few months before The Summoning.

Divided 5 stars
Derek's POV of the time at the end of The Summoning and the beginning of The Awakening when the boys get separated from Chloe and Derek is really worried about her, though he keeps telling himself he's only worried for Simon's sake because Simon likes Chloe.

Disenchanted 3.5 stars
Tori's POV about the time during The Awakening when she and Simon get separated from Chloe and Derek.

Facing Facts 2.5 stars
There's nothing really wrong with this story, the character moments are all great. Except for the glaring continuity issue where this story is all about Chloe coming to terms with killing Tori's mom, which she didn't?! So yeah, this left me a bit confused, to say the least.

Belonging 5 stars
Derek gets kidnapped by some of the Cains who want him to join their family. Chloe and Liz go after Derek and get him back. This also has some very cute Chloe/Derek moments, ending with their three-months-anniversary.

The New Guy 5 stars
Maya's POV. It's the first day of school and Maya meets Rafe... and she's not impressed.

The Invitation 4 stars
Rafe's POV of going to Maya's 16th birthday party. This gives away some of his motives, so even so it takes place pretty early during The Gathering, it should not be read until after for first time readers.

Atoning 5 stars
This one is set after the ending of both of the YA trilogies. It's a great glimpse into what the teen's lives look like now, after they've made their "deal with the devil". And it's great to see how much more confident Chloe has grown since we first met her.

I am sooooo sad that this series has finished now :( i have literally fallen in love with every single character in both the darkest powers and the darkest rising trilogies!! I haven't read a book like this before where there are extra short stories for the readers to learn more however, i literally loved it so much. I got to know each character in so much more depth especially ones that didn't get a lot of time in the books (tori, simon etc..) At first i wasn't too sure how i felt about reading The books from the others perspectives but as soon as it started from dereks pov i knew i was going to enjoy it. Speaking about derek... he is my all time favourite character and his and chloe's relationship will forever be my favourite of all time. Im so glad that i got to see more of their relationship because they became "official" at the very end of the reckoning which was amazing because it was slowburn enemies to lovers kind of thing but we didn't get too see much of what they were like after they realised they liked each other. Even though there wasn't LOADS of new chloe and derek content, the cute scenes made me want to cry ahhhh i love them lol. Also, I'm glad the darkest rising characters got more written about them because i loved their story so much (even though i am VERY torn about whether i like her with rafe or daniel... anyway) I'm glad that we got to see maya and chloe become such close friends because they both were in need of a best friend (chloe because she never really had one and maya because of serena.. RIP) but they make the best friendship because they are both badass main characters that can hold their own. Im going to miss these characters so so so so much but I'm so glad that i read about them! (might need a re-read soon LOL)

I really enjoyed the compilation of short stories that was written for both the Darkest Powers Trilogy and the Darkness Rising Trilogy. It really provided background on some of the characters and also tied in a lot of what was missed in the original trilogy stories. It’s a great addition for the trilogies and really brings them together.

Okay okay. It’s more than I thought we were going to get. I really enjoyed Derek and the part about his family. However, I kind of want to know what happens when they really are ready to take on the Nasts. If it’s before or after Chloe goes to college. Also what’s up with Chloe’s pendant? I have a theory thanks to Cassandra Clare, but it would be nice to have it confirmed.

I'm always here for a Kelley Armstrong book. I wasn't crazy about the two series this was based on (liked them, but not as much as Women of the Otherworld), and I was less familiar with the characters. Still enjoyable though!!

I am so glad that I bought this book. I loved the "bonus material". Kelley Armstrong is an amazing writer. I can't wait to read more of her books. I would LOVE to see more about the characters in the future.

This was a nice reintroduction to characters in previous series. Found it a little difficult to follow the disjointed timelines but I probably just need to re-read the original trilogies

I liked that Derek got to take the stage for a few stories. My favorite was Atoning to how everything was going after the books ended and how badger lake life was going.
