A compendium of Tynan's theatre reviews from 1944-63 (including his influential review of the epoch-making LOOK BACK IN ANGER). Required reading for anyone seriously interested in top-flight theatre criticism and/or the state of the English theatre in the mid-20th century. Tynan's prose is scintillating, his sensiblity acute, his passion for his subject peerless. A great read.

Whatever you think of Tynan's politics or cultural views (and I don't think much of either) you can't deny he was probably the best Theater critic in the English Speaking world from 1950-1963. Whether its discussing Danny Kaye's one man performance in 1950, or Beckett in 1963, the writing is always intelligent, interesting, and often witty. Another plus, is that Tynan's reviews cover a lot of classics (both modern or not), so even if you can't relate to the remarks on specific productions, you can enjoy the comments on the play itself. The only minus is the book only over his reviews in England. His reviews of Broadway are collected in other books (as yet unread).
