Shape of My Heart marries the hautning lyrics of pop icon Sting with the mesmerizing images of Pablo Picasso, perhaps the greatest artist of the twentieth century. The result is a scintillating look at how the forces of love and desire will enrich and complicate life.
Sting's lyrics from his amazing song echo the feelings of an entire generation. Here is a true love song from the 1990s, full of ambiguities, self-doubt, hope, and mysticism. In Sting's vision, we discover that the truth of the heart is often masked by forces beyond our control. These are words that reverberate with feeling, much like the images painted by the ever controversial Picasso.
Both these artists share the ability to make the world see itself in a new light. Picasso painted his subjects--particularly the women he loved--unlike any artist before or after him, and the world was changed because of his vision. In a similar way, the complexity of Sting's words elevate and expand popular music into previously uncharted territory.
Together, these words and images--like all messages from the heart--will make the perfect gift of love.
Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, CBE, universally known by his stage name Sting, is a Grammy Award-winning English musician from Wallsend in Newcastle upon Tyne. Prior to starting his solo career, he was the principal songwriter, lead singer and bass player of the rock band The Police. As a solo musician and member of The Police, Sting has sold over 105 million records, and received over sixteen Grammy Awards for his work.
Possibly the most pretentious book in my collection. It marries the lyrics of one of Sting's songs (not one of his best, but a decent one) to the paintings of Picasso. It has horrendously pretentious, badly written/erroneous sleeve notes and bios of the two protagonists. For example 'Every Breath You Take' was released in 83 not 86. The Police only released 5 not 8 albums, even with live albums it's only 7 and one was released post book. Apparently sting also acted in 'Lock Stock and Two Bells'!!! As you can see, I know a bit about Sting because I was a huge Police fan, however, this makes me doubt the accuracy of Picasso's bio, who I know little of barring the fact he cut his ear off! (JOKE!) Both bios read like a teenage fanboy trying to use clever words to justify their sycophancy. I enjoyed flicking through it whilst listening to the music, but this is one hell of a niche book!
My sister gave me this book for my birthday one year. I had mentioned it to her a couple of years earlier because I saw it at a museum bookshop in London and regretted not picking it up. She remembered! I took the book to my room, put the song on, and read while I listened. It brought tears to my eyes. Picasso's paintings and Sting's music are perfectly matched. This book is greater than the sum of its parts.
