Max Brand, one of America's most popular and prolific novelists and author of such enduring works as Destry Rides Again and the Doctor Kildare stories, died on the Italian front in 1944.
"The Cross Brand" is a competent pulp western with some interesting features including an unusual plot element which sets it apart from other works in the genre. The characters are the usual types with the exception of the apparent villain who does gain depth. The social commentary also has somewhat more seriousness than is usual in this type of short action novel.
I read a much-used library copy and this book seems difficult to get in e-format but ABE books does offer many cheap paperback versions--often combined with other works by the author.
