I read this book as a teenager. It is a very moving account of a young upper class woman’s struggles with mental illness. She was the first cousin to Major Ronald Ferguson the Duchess of York’s father .

I was the same, tried to read it a couple of times, but just couldn't get into it. I think because there was no background to start with, no real introduction to the book.
