Such a great book of memories from my childhood. I remember, or think I remember, my mom collecting these for me...from the grocery store, I think. I also remember reading it with my mom and enjoying the pictures and stories. It's a long read (it took us 2 nights to get through) but totally worth it and fun to share with my daughters now. It is such a treasure that I have all the volumes of this collection, I believe them to be completely irreplaceable...and since they were published BEFORE ISBN numbers, they are pretty much antiques! :) I also love that I have the sticker which matches the cover picture in each one... "This book belongs to Pam G" (my name is carefully handwritten on the sticker). Love it, and can't wait to start on the second volume!
I have only read parts of some of these Sesame Street Library books. They are almost more like magazines. Each one features several letters and has multiple short stories and poems. So when S occasionally asks me to read one of these I usually end up reading just part of it because they are long to read in one sitting. He'd sit through the whole thing happily I think, but I find it a heavy lift to read the entire thing in one go. Anyway, I have noticed recently that when he goes to his room to relax in the afternoons he has been "reading" these (or perhaps I should stop putting "reading" in quotation marks because I think sometimes now he is legitimately reading at least some of the words). He hasn't talked to me much about these, but I think one of his personal summer projects has been reading through them. They have been in his room for quite some time, so I'm glad he's finally getting use out of them!
Nostalgia and the love of just having a child be a child. Not sure why we became a society forcing small children to grow up so quickly. With curriculum that demands our students as young as 8 to know about the civil war. I am pretty sure we are doing more harm than good. This is a gentle reminder of better times. Innocent, silly and funny. A lost art and I presume a lost innocence.
To be honest, this is pretty bad. The stories are so harried and strange, and there are bad cultural things throughout. But there's such sweet nostalgia.
