The Green Snake and the Beautiful Lily is one of the most important stories of the Anthroposophic and Rosicrucian streams. It is a timeless, allegorical tale of initiation and had a profound impact on Rudolf Steiner and on the formulation of his teachings. He called the fairy tale a kind of "secret revelation," an "apocalypse." As the authors point out in The Time Is At ...more

Goethe attempts to convey in imagery what he felt couldn't be said in words, or even, I dare-say that which should not even be said. He was trying to convey the feeling and experience of personal spiritual transformation and the journey to enlightenment. This of course is only achieved through death of the materially-enslaved soul and the consummate rebirth into a high consciousness.

I could sense a distrust of words and narrow definitions that Goethe was trying to avoid because the imagery was

It's a simple story, but with a layered and difficult interpretation. but when you get it, you'll marvel at this fairy tale that leaves an indelible lesson on aesthetics and its value.

I usually have a somewhat good idea of what the author is trying to tell the reader with his story, but this?

This is probably the most pointless story I have ever read. It was boring and not even remotely as beautiful to imagine as Goethe's other works are. The only thing about this story that I found very interesting was how, given the symbolism of a snake in religion, you were always expecting the snake to do something horrible. But, on the contrary, the snake actually did something noble,

This tale shows how powerful sacrifice can be. The snake sacrificed herself for others. This is a fascinating tale. However, it is hard to follow and isn't explained well. I would not recommend this book to a friend because of its complexity. The tale was odd, but yet still entertaining.

Ehdottomasti yksi oudoimmista kirjoista, jonka olen lukenut.

I did enjoyed it, I think. It was beautifully written of course, but I’m not sure I’ll remember it in years to come. An okay tale I think...

I think it is a good enough book, just not for me. The fairy tale was pretty neat. I read this book to learn more about the thought of Inkling Owen Barfield. Goethe's tale reminds me a lot of Barfield's "Silver Trumpet". Steiner's lectures were okay, and helped with interpretation of Goethe. But, I am glad to be though this book.

A hard read but a wonderful experience. I have been fortunate enough to see adaptations for the stage.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was a German writer. George Eliot called him "Germany's greatest man of letters... and the last true polymath to walk the earth." Goethe's works span the fields of poetry, drama, literature, theology, humanism, and science. Goethe's magnum opus, lauded as one of the peaks of world literature, is the two-part drama Faust.
