Offering the timeless message of God's love, this joyous collection shows that whatever adversity life brings, the heavenly Father understands it all. The tender, reverent verse of Helen Steiner Rice combines with the vibrant watercolors of Stan Myers.
This edition isn't the one I have but as mine doesn't have an ISBN I'll use it. My edition looks like some sort of special release. It's a padded hardback and in a gold and clear case. It's obviously a keepsake. I found it while going through my paternal Grandmother's belongings after her death and I tucked it away then. It's been in my bedroom closet for the past few years and something made me pull it out last night. I'm not a big poetry fan and I'm especially not a fan of religion based poetry - or religion based anything for that matter. But the first poem grabbed me somehow so I'm going to try to read them through.
I'm finished with this and I'm not sure I know what to say. I liked the poems, in fact, this is the kind of poetry I like. So I'm not trying to be mean when I say that it reminds me of a child's poetry. I distinctly recall myself writing this sort of poem as a child. (Much like any kid does or would I'm sure.) I think the publishers tried to lump certain poems together, poems about love, or daily giving, etc. but IMO all the managed to do was make the poems redundant. Very redundant. I did find one that I really liked and that's here:
"This is My Prayer
Bless me, heavenly Father, forgive my erring ways, Grant me strength to serve Thee, put purpose in my days... Give me understanding enough to make me kind So I may judge all people with my heart and not my mind... And teach me to be patient in everything I do, Content to trust Your Wisdom and to follow after You... And help me when I falter and hear me when I pray And receive me in Thy Kingdom to dwell with Thee some day."
And this reminds me although it's not shown in this poem so much. (It might be the only one of it's kind in this way.) Lots of words were in all caps. And I don't mean 'God' or 'He' when referring to God. I mean like 'DAILY WISDOM' and 'LOVE FOR YOU'. It was soooo much that it just really took away from the poems for me. It stopped the flow of the words countless times in each and every poem. That's sad because the poems are good. If you like the subject and you like this sort of poem - and can get past what I've mentioned here - I'd say give it a shot. I'm going to keep it to look at every know and then and maybe share with Julia at some point.
I really enjoyed this book of poetry and learning about Helen Steiner Rice. This isn't the edition I read; the edition I read was published in 1998 and was 80 pages, but it isn't listed on Goodreads. This edition was illustrated by Stan Myers and the artwork was crisp and beautiful watercolors. 🎨 Reading some of the websites and past reviews, Helen Steiner Rice was apparently one of America's best loved modern poets. After she died, the Helen Steiner Rice Foundation was established and that's who released the special edition book of Helen's poetry that I read. Proceeds from her books now benefit the Helen Steiner Rice Foundation, serving Greater Cincinnati and Lorain, OH. ✝️ Helen's poetry is beautifully written and it makes sense. She writes about God's love, finding strength in God, and coming to Him in prayer. She must have had many rough days; most religious poetry doesn't discuss grief and sorrow or troubled times, but hers does. 📖
Some of my favorites: -The Joy of Unselfish Giving -Take Time To Be Kind -Somebody Loves You -God's Love -Wonderous Evidence -Mystery & Miracle -Seek First His Kingdom -The Reflections of God -Live By Faith -Daily Prayers Dissolve Your Cross -A Firm Foundation of Faith -We Never Walk Alone -Put Your Problems in God's Hands -This Is Just A Resting Place -My Garden of Prayer -God's Peace & Calm -Anxious Prayers -Learn To Rest
A very good collection of Helen Steiner Rice's poetry. I gifted my sister two of her poetry volumes. 🖊
I've always loved the poetry of Helen Steiner Rice and this 1976 book, SOMEBODY LOVES YOU, is no exception. I purchased it through Better World Books.com (which is a great book site to purchase from as they donate books when you make purchases) and have had it for a couple of years; so, decided it was time to read it. It has some beautiful poems and I would recommend it as a gift or just to have as your own to read when you are feeling "down" or "troubled". The whole book is only 160 pages so it can be read slowly or read all at once. I started it on a Saturday evening and finished it the following day. I plan on sending it to a friend of mine as I feel that she would enjoy it.
