The Little Mermaid is one of the most famous fairy tales of Danish Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875). I am still to read the whole collection but I got a copy of this book as I try to buy a few children's books every payday for our outreach program for child literacy on May 25, 2013 to be held at the Museo Pambata. We will spend half a day to read three stories to children aged 4-8 from the financially-challenged families of Manila, we will also feed them and give them loot bags that contain school supplies, candies, biscuits, etc. Then all the donated books will go to the Museo for their mobile library. If you want to donate, please communicate with me. Any amount or second hand children's books will do.

The movie adaptation of this book was the first VHS that I bought in 1995 for my daughter who was then an infant. Like most Filipino parents, I wanted her to appreciate the Disney characters and get acquainted with the English language even at her very tender years. This is the reason why most young Filipino middle or upper class parents speak to their small children in English. They would like their kids to get used to the sound of this international language by teaching them the simple conversational English. However, when their kids become older, it is either the parents feel that they've exhausted naubusan na ng ingles their knowledge of the language and probably they also start to think that their kids' teachers must have already taken over that role and so they revert back to speaking in vernacular (Tagalog or other Philippine dialects). It seems to me to be like a cycle. The kids speak in simple English when they were very young with their parents and teachers, but when they become older, they find out that the "real" world requires them to speak in their national language. Well, there are exceptions because they are really parents who require their kids to speak in English at home and of course, they have the facility and expertise in the language themselves. Most most Filipino parents talk in Tagalog everyday at home, at work or even in the streets but when they have a child, they talk to them in English until the child is in their schooling years. Then when the child becomes a parent he/she does the same.

The reason why I am mentioning this is that in The Little Mermaid story, Ariel the young mermaid, loses her voice in exchange of having a pair of feet. This is like those children who at their young age are taught and encouraged to speak in English. They become confused because they hear people outside their home speaking in Tagalog. It good if they attend an international school where students are mostly foreigners and they are all required to speak in English. But how about if they attend a local school? That's when they realize that they should speak in Tagalog like most of the children in their "normal" neighborhood. It's like Ariel coming into her senses that falling in love can do wonders and she does not need to forge a pact with the devil to have her feet and be human like her Prince Charming.

I like the Disney retelling of the classic fairy tales. They are kid friendly. They contain all the emotions of real life but manage to not be scary like some of the original fairy tales were. Ariel is unhappy living under the sea and wants to walk on land . She is fascinated by humans and then as fate would have it , she falls in love with one. There is plenty of evil in Ursela but there is soooo much love in everyone else.
A Wonderful Story.

I would have my students create an undersea world for Ariel out of existing objects and created ones.

5/16/2024 - This is probably the wordiest book I’ve read to my daughter so far. I didn’t think she’d be interested, but she stayed with me the entire time! A very watered down version of the movie, but hits the major parts and isn’t too scary. Can’t wait to read the original story to my daughter, but that’ll be another ten years or so. 🫧

The Little Mermaid is a Disney classic Fantasy in the form of a children's picture book. This book is intended for children 3-6 years.

I like this picture book because it gets children interested in reading by using one of the most popular Disney princesses that Disney had ever created. This book is a story about a mermaid who never feels like she belongs, then one day she rescues a human (prince) and falls in love with him. She gets to become human but without her voice and things get difficult, but that doesn't stop Ariel. She is determined to get the prince to love her back so she can stay a human in his world. This fantasy story is great for little kids, especially little girls. Mermaids is an exciting fantasy, especially when you mix a princess and a mermaid together. This story teaches determination to young children. This story is of course a classic , but is truly brought to life in book form with this children's book.

One thing I don't like about this book is you shouldn't marry a guy you met three days ago but it's pure love, who am i to judge? Also, that sea monster Ursula terrified me when I was a child but then she got destroyed and turned into bubbles just like that which gave me a little relief.

Still, the love story, characters personalities is beautiful. The story taught me not to give up on my dreams no matter what people say...

This was seriously the cutest movie ever'! I mean Ariel always wants to do something that pleases her father and loves to go on wonderful adventures and find and discover many things. When she meets the Prince she thinks she has made a remarkable discovery. She is a cute girl with many things to go for.

Ariel is a curious young mermaid. She likes to explore sunken ships, swim up to the surface, and learn all she can about the world above the sea. Children ages 2–5 will love finding out what happens when this Disney Princess falls in love with a human in the full-color Little Golden Book retelling of Disney The Little Mermaid

Slight changes bothered me. "Kiss the fair beauty" doesn't have the same sound as "kiss the girl"
