Some gifts come with a price. Twenty years before, high school coach Gil Gilbert gave up his dream to play professional baseball so he could marry his pregnant girlfriend, Keri. When he miraculously discovers that he can pitch with deadly accuracy and speed, he must choose between his successful career and comfortable family life or his chance to play with the Colorado Rockies during a player's strike. Gil stuns the pitching staff with 100 mph fastballs and is offered a contract. After joining the Rockies, the world soon learns that Gil is a supernatural phenomenon and the Rockies keep winning. But Gil soon faces stiff opposition, including a frivolous lawsuit, a father who feels his son's calling to pitch is to save souls, and threats from the striking players. As the season progresses, Gil discovers that his unexpected gift is the result of a rare disease, and continuing to pitch may hasten his own death. While Keri supports his decision to keep playing, she is fearful about her husband's bizarre health condition. Gil must decide what price he is willing to pay to live his dream.

Gil is a high school baseball coach and teacher. He’s happily married to Keri and they have two wonderful children. Gil could have played professional baseball when he was younger, but chose a steady job and income to look after his family instead. Now that he’s in his forties he gets another chance to have the career of his dreams. Something is changing inside Gil and he’s getting more muscular every day. All of a sudden he can throw a fastball that goes over 100 mph. The regular players of the Colorado Rockies team are on strike and this is Gil’s chance to prove himself and make his dreams come true.
Gil’s miraculous fastballs get a lot of media attention. Not everyone believes Gil has gained his strong muscles without the aid of drugs. He has a lot of explaining to do. Gil constantly has to deal with the press, with a father who uses his beliefs to make his son go in the direction he’s chosen for him, a lawsuit that has no merit but might cost him everything and plenty of medical tests. Gil is now part of the Rockies and his team keeps winning, mainly because of Gil’s fantastic achievements. However, when the test results come in it becomes clear that his success has a price. There’s something wrong with Gil’s body. It might make him superhumanly strong, but what will it cost him?
Gil is a strong and striking story about family, talent, dreams and hope. I was impressed by Gil’s personality. He’s a kind man with a beautiful soul. He’s loving, caring and good. No matter how people treat him he always stays true to himself and remains polite. Gil needs to be stoic to make it in a baseball team with young guys who don’t understand how he can throw so fast. His character makes it difficult for people to dislike him though. They are trying and each time someone wants to wreck Gil’s reputation my heart was in my mouth. I was rooting for him, I wanted him to make all of his dreams come true and I wished him all the love and luck in the world, because of the kind of man he is. That made Gil really special for me. I cared a lot about this man's presence, his family life and his health.
Darin Gibby has an engaging writing style that captivated me from beginning to end. I loved the way he writes about the baseball game, he’s clearly passionate about it and that shows throughout the entire story. Gil sparkles and shines, it dazzles and amazes, but it also moved me to tears. There’s so much emotion beneath the surface of the show Gil is putting on when he’s pitching and I loved the depth of every single layer Darin Gibby has put into his story. Gil is a magnificent compelling book, it’s a thought-provoking story with a gorgeous ending that greatly impressed me.
Gil by Darin Gibby is such a powerful read. I grew up around baseball thanks to my grandfather who was an umpire at all levels. Baseball gets in your blood and becomes a passion. My family was very involved in watching and participating in the sport, just like Gil’s family.
Where to start with this book. You have a man, Gil, who has a good life as a coach and teacher. He has a wonderful wife, Keri, and two great kids. He is also facing some court trouble involving a local cheerleader. The stress and frustration of the lawsuit against him sends him out throwing baseballs. His best friend and assistant coach, Peck, watches him throw one day and is amazed by his speed and strength.
As fate would have it, professional baseball players are on strike and baseball season is closing in. The powers that be decide to search for some replacement players until the strike is over. Once Peck discovers this opportunity he tricks his best friend into going to tryouts.Gil thinks his friend is crazy. How can a man in his mid 40s, who walked away from his chance at a pro career 20 years prior, make it onto a professional team? The answer, he goes out onto the field and throws pitches that are clocked at over 100 mph.
Once the Colorado Rockies see what Gil can do they want to bring him onto the team. He undergoes multiple tests before he decides to join the team, finally given the chance to live his dream. What could possibly go wrong? Unfortunately for Gil he has to face multiple challenges. He still has to face the lawsuit, he has to face other replacement players that don’t like him, then there are rumors that he is using drugs to pitch as fast and accurately as he is. He also faces issues with his family and the many questions about his health.
Gil is a story about finally having the opportunity to live your dream despite incredibly odds. It’s a story about family, friendship, love, and trust. It’s a story about not giving up even when certain factors tell you it is time to walk away. This book had me feeling so many emotions and yes, I even wept. I laughed, I smiled, and I cheered for Gil. I found myself so wrapped up in this book that I could not put it down until I read until the very end. This is a book that left a permanent mark on my heart and for that I must thank Darin Gibby and encourage others to read this book.

What did I like? Wow, this was the most amazing and emotional book I have read lately. I cried, laughed and jumped for joy for Gil!
What will you like? Excellent writing, with lots of descriptions and details but just right, not too much to overwhelm the reader. Well developed with the most awesome characters that will steal your heart. Gil is unbelievable and so lovable. Join him in his journey to the fame that he missed in his early years, you won’t be sorry, only if you bypass and don’t read it!!!!!! This book will make you believe in miracles! I received this from the author for an honest review with no other compensation.
I was excited to listen to the Audible version of this book because the author, Darin Gibby, is my closest friend from law school.
It really is a terrific novel, even if you're not a baseball fan. The protagonist, Gil Gilbert, is a 40-year-old high school teacher and baseball coach in the suburbs of Denver who suddenly develops the ability to throw fastballs over 100 mph. When the Major League Baseball players go on strike, and open tryouts are held to find replacements, Gil embarks on a whirlwind journey of fame, fortune, and literally overnight success.
However, he soon discovers that he may pay a heavy price for his mysterious talent, and the choices he makes along the way are inspiring, wrenching, and uplifting.
Gibby is a great writer, and has created an entertaining story, with sympathetic and interesting characters, that is a truly enjoyable read.
Received free from goodreads. What a great read as my family has Baseball in our blood. Didn't see the ending coming. If you woke up feeling stronger one morning would you give up the life you have to fulfill a dream? Gil can pitch really fast, like over 105 . He gets signed during a strike year by the Rockies and history is made. I know I will read this book again next year when Baseball Season is just starting.
While reading this book I kept finding myself going back in my own memory bank of younger days with my grandpa.. the choices he made to continue to play baseball.
This book felt so close to home. This book has so much behind the cover. I was really impressed with the way it was written as well as the characters. And surprisingly found myself enjoying a book sports related.
S An unusual attribute to one's walk in faith. A beautiful story of discovering a relationship with God and THE MESSAGES He delivers to us in almost magical ways...the greatest if them...love.
What happens when you love a game but it's killing you? This is the question that Gil had to wrestle with. I enjoyed the book and there were good thinking points in it.
This was one wonderful book and I will read this one again. I cried a little bit but that's the way I am. You have got to read this book. Baseball is in my blood ever since I was a teenager. It kept my interest the entire book.
Gil is a book for anyone to read. Whether you are a baseball fan or not, you should read Gil. I do happen to love the game of baseball, but this story is so much more than a story about baseball.
Darin Gibby has written an exceptional story about a man named Gil. Gil gave up his dream of playing baseball professional when his girlfriend (now his wife) became pregnant. Gil became a high school teacher and baseball coach. He has two wonderful children and life seems to be going along great until a lawsuit occurs and causes Gil to rethink life. During this time, Gil discovers that he has a superb ability to pitch the ball at astonishing speeds. There is a strike occurring throughout baseball and the local team, the Colorado Rockies, happen to be looking for undiscovered talent ("misfits, wannabes, broken down old men"). It has "America has talent in baseball" vibe in a very fun way to read. Gil does join the Rockies team but encounters disapproval, contention from his father, hostility from other players and aversion to his own natural ability to pitch the baseball over 100 mph.
This is where the story truly began for me. It is a story about love, friendship, family, dreams, and the ability to overcome obstacles while holding your head high. I totally enjoyed reading the entire book but I absolutely loved Darin Gibby's ability to write a story about baseball that could be applied to life in general. When the going gets really tough, we let our personality shine and keep on going. We do not turn away or choose to frown. Gil always smiled and always seemed to find the good. Gil's wife gives him good advice early on, "You should follow your dream just because it is your dream." We should not let others determine what our dream is but follow our own heart and encourage others.
I was hesitate when I first received this book from library thing to review but oh I am so thankful that I decided to go ahead and read it. It is a quick read that reads really fast and will consume your heart.
Gil, a baseball book that is bigger than baseball. It’s about life, love and second chances. Darin Gibby’s effortless crisp writing style puts you into the action from page one, weaving a timeless story about a man given a second chance to follow his passion.
But at what price? That is the central question of the novel. Gibby writes an engrossing character study of Gil, a complicated, likeable hero. Gil, a middle-aged family man given a shot to realize his dream of playing professional baseball due to a fluke medical condition, grapples with both the physical and psychological obstacles such an opportunity brings. While the chance to ‘go back’ and make different choices is an enticing idea, Gil understands that life, as he has lived it, has been rewarding in its own way. And, while Gil longs for his lost dream, he is just as cautious about losing his current life should the baseball dream become reality.
Gil, at its heart, is a story about family. To that end, Gil is filled with fully realized characters, from Gil’s immediate family to his friends and larger community. Darin Gibby creates a real family and depicts ordinary life in suburban Colorado so accurately that you feel as if you become a part of the community, as well as the Denver Rockies fan base over the course of the story. Gil believably takes you behind the scenes of professional baseball and Gibby writes riveting and tense descriptions of a pitcher’s mental battles over the course of an inning, a game and a season.
Gil’s a great, fun read that also resonates on a deeper level that leaves you with lasting life lessons long after the story is over.
Here is a story about baseball that woman can enjoy even if you don't know a lot about baseball. Gil is a 44-year-old man that is given a second chance at this age to play professional baseball, he had to give up playing professional baseball when he got his girlfriend Keri pregnant in college to marry her. Gil spent 20 years being a high school science teacher and baseball coach. Then slowly his body starts to change, he is gaining muscle mass and strength, plus losing his middle-age spare tire and starts to acquire a body of a 20-year-old. He feels like he did when he was twenty years old, what is going on with Gil's body, plus he starts throwing baseballs at incredible speeds some way over 100 per hours. No one in professional baseball as ever thrown a baseball that fast and with accuracy. When the Colorado Rockies professional baseball team goes out on a player's strike Gil tries out for the team, he blows away the pitching staff with his 100 mph fastballs and is offered a contract. But life has a way of intruding and Gil has to contend with a lawsuit from a student from the high school he taught at, a father who feels his son's pitching ability is to help save souls and threats from the striking players. Then Gil discovers that this unexpected gift comes with a price, if he continues to pitch he may lose his life to the rare disease that is giving him a second chance at life and at a professional baseball career even if Gil's wife supports him to keep playing but is he willing to lose everything that means the world to him to live his dream.
I this book for free from the author/publisher in response for an honest review of the book. I have not had the opportunity to read this book at this time. I will add my review of this book once I have read the book. Thank k you for allowing me the optometrist review your work. I look forward to reading this book.
A baseball lovers tale. Set during a baseball strike, the author follows an over-aged pitcher with a team of has-beens and wannabes through a season of baseball. With the strike unresolved, it progresses into postseason as the medical condition miracle progresses to it's culmination. The personal growth of the characters drives the story. Great resolution.
I was sent a copy of Gil as part of a blog tour in exchange for my honest review.
Like others have stated, this is a must read for any baseball fan. But, this book is about so much more than baseball. This is about love and family, living your dreams, and saying goodbye. This tore at my heartstrings and I could not put it down.
The moments with Gil and his children killed me. I literally had tears running down my face, and I had to take a moment to compose myself. This may be due to losing my own father about the same age as her oldest child.
I really enjoyed the writing style. It was a very fast and easy read. I honestly did not think I would get past the first chapter, but I finished it in two nights.
