Mark Cilley's most popular Akiko collection is now even fancier! Akiko Flights of Fancy: The High Flying Expanded Edition is the definitive anthology of short stories culled from over 50 issues of the original Akiko comic book series and other obscure venues. This enormous new edition is twice the size of the sold-out original and includes many more rare, clever and outrageous comic innovations from one unique mind.

Cute scattered stories about a girl from earth and her adventures with a collection of creatures from other planets.
Got scared when I first looked at this, thinking it was awfully similar to my most favorite Zita the Spacegirl, and it's true, there are remarkable similarities in the character types and general setting. But Zita is more of a throughline narrative, has a more uniform illustration style, and is generally so much more cohesive (plus, color!). This has its charms - but not enough to pull me through the whole thing once I'd gotten the drift (with a laundry basket full of other books I need to read chomping at the bit behind it). It's also written at a slightly older audience.
Collecting #39 and #48-52, plus ALL of the back-up strips, pin-ups and oddball gags from Mark Crilley's 52-issue run of Akiko, this book is a delightful complement to the seven other Akiko trade paperbacks. To truly understand why Akiko's one of my all-time favorites, this probably isn't the best place to start, but to see how creative Mark Crilley truly is, this book's a great one.
Extremely versatile illustration styles, great humor, and creative use of the comics page, Crilley gets a TON of mileage out of a stuffy bookworm, a well-meaning space pirate, a broken-down robot, a floating warbly-speaking head, and a fourth-grade girl.
Recommended, but not as recommended as the primary Akiko volumes.
An excellent collection of all ages humorous comics. Full of witty jokes, strong characters, unique settings, puns, and its own creative brand of meta humor. Great for fans of Monty Python or Crilley's other works.
