This book is a refreshing and brave story of survival of the human spirits in adversity; and a bold attempt to portray controversial and sensitive issues on religion, sexuality and perseverance of the human spirit in a fictional community that mirrors much of the current global tension and struggles individuals face at the interface of religious fanaticism, violence and attempts to create normality in a turbulent world. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and the memorable characters , a refreshing voice in the African contemporary literature! Recommend it!

The only books I have read before that, took place in Africa, are written by Alexander McCall Smith. Those stories are placed in Botswana and the leading character is a female detective. This book also has a leading female protagonist, but the scene is set in a darker setting in Africa, Nigeria. The question raised in this novel is how can men and women live together, even though we are different, believing in different Gods, and come from different backgrounds? And when we have problems, how much are we willing to sacrifice for our dreams?
I especially liked the description of the local village life, the flavours, the food, the noise… you felt part of the community.
I look forward to the next book by the author.

Highly recommended!

This short novel was so powerful and action packed. Written with such raw emotion you get a glimpse of the lives of several different characters; what they are willing to fight for and sacrifice in order to regain their freedom. Their struggles will stay with me for a long time. I highly recommend.

This was a truly engaging book that I simply could not put down. Read it from cover to cover in 2 days. From a pure entertainment value viewpoint, it is hard to beat. The characters are engaging, the plot sophisticated and the storytelling mesmerising.

Its an opening into a world that I know nothing of, horrendous experiences are described in enough details to make you realise the news doesn't say much at all. A journey into the sacrifices made to protect family, friends and lovers. It is a book of people's survival and the boundaries of morality that are crossed as people look to preserve their own lives. Eye opening.
