'I am not duchess material!'

Macabre premise of a young determined scientifically gifted young woman who loves her guardian and mentor so much that she attempts to bring her back to life makes for a marvellous literary opportunity.
Felicity Fields is somewhere on the autism spectrum. Her passion is chemistry. With the death of her beloved guardian, Aunt Margaret she throws her energies into alchemy and the search for the elixir of life, and the creation of the Philosophers stone. Felicity's desire

I’m a bit stumped where to even start reviewing this book. I’ve read Regency romances with determined heroines before, even ones interested in science, and ones with supernatural themes.

I’ve never read one where the heroine was an alchemist determined to reanimate her dead adoptive mother.

To his credit, the hero reacts very well when he discovers the object of his affection is dabbling in necromancy. But then, he’s known Felicity all her life. I still think I’d have been backing away slowly, loo

Felicity Fields has lost everyone she has ever loved to death, but she plans to change that. She is close to figuring out the formula for the Elixir of Life, an ancient alchemy recipe that promises eternal life, healing powers and possibly the power to raise the dead. Since the death of her adopted mother, Margaret, Countess of Tetbury, Felicity has been consumed with unlocking the secret of the Philosopher's Stone and reviving Margaret. She has gone to great lengths to ensure success, but she i ...more

A Gothic romance in the old style that will keep you wondering what could possibly happen next! Miss Felicity Fields has lost her one constant mother figure, Margaret, the Countess of Tetbury. Using her knowledge of alchemy, she comes up with a scheme to bring Margaret back to life (deja vu Frankenstein but prettier?). Nicholas Harding, Duke of Wycliffe returns to his home after being gone for many years now that he has responsibility for Felicity after his aunt has passed away. Childhood friend ...more

I enjoyed the writing style. There was more internal self-talk than there was actual conversation between Felicity and Nicholas, so I felt like I had a good understanding of each one's motivation.
I didn't feel as though they grew together as a couple or worked to overcome an obstacle in a way that convinced me they earned a happily ever after. To me, it felt like Felicity was unable to accomplish her Plan A and so she accepted Nicholas's attention and affection as a Plan B. (I read Felicity as a

**I was gifted, by the author, an ARC copy of this title in exchange for my fair and honest review.**

"The Determined Duchess" is a dark and chilling story of a young woman who has lost everyone she's ever loved. When her beloved adopted mother dies, Felicity Fields decides to take matters into her own hands using science! For Science! Felicity is determined to discover the secret of the Philosophers Stone and bring back Margret (aforementioned adopted mother) from the grave. This young woman has

I received an advance readers copy in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed this book. This is the first book in this series that I have read. I highly recommend it. Ms. Monroe has done an outstanding job with this story. I'm looking forward to reading the first book and future books in the series.

Erica Monroe never disappoints! Felicity is a scientist and alchemist. This day in age she would most likely be on the autism spectrum. She has always been different, taking everything literally, speaking in a blunt manner, and not fully understanding emotion. Her childhood friend and sometimes tormentor is back in her life and she isn't sure what to make of it. The by play between the two characters is endearing as they find in each other just what has been missing from their lives.

I’m a huge fan of historical romances, but I don’t think (at least I can’t remember) I’ve ever read a Gothic romance before. When I saw this title was on a blog tour, I decided to give it a try. This is the second book in a series, and I haven’t read book one. It was also originally published in the Charmed at Christmas anthology.

I think I figured out WHY I’ve never read a Gothic romance before. In this

The Determined Duchess is the second book in the Gothic Brides series by Erica Monroe. Although part of a series it can be read as a standalone story.

Miss Felicity Fields is grieving the loss of her guardian, who had been more like a mother to her. She has preserved the woman's organs and body for six months while attempting to develop a way to bring her back to life. She doesn't believe in Galvanism and is attempting to produce a Philosopher's Stone. Time is running out, not only because the bo

Reads like a full story, no sex a bit dark in the writings of what Felicity did with the body, it was a bit unsettling for me. HEA, duel povs.
She needs to hurry and figure out the recipe for making the mythological philosopher’s stone to bring her dead guardian/aunt back to life within a 6 months and her time is nearing to crucial point when Nickolas shows up 6 years from the last time he visited. Nick wants to drop Lissie off at his sister for her guidance into getting Lessie ready for the ‘to

Creative! The Determined Duchess by Erica Monroe is book 2 in the Gothic Brides series but can be a standalone as well. This story is both creative and original and I found it to be easy to read. Erica has a talent for making her characters come alive and very descriptive. This story has death, loneliness, paranormal, arguments, misunderstanding, understanding, mourning, friendships, weddings, scientist, Philosopher’s Stone, kindness, vexing, difficult, arguments, hate and love! Felicity is not your typical heroine. Her scientific mind leads her to push the limits of life and death. I felt for her loneliness and loved her smarts. There were times when I had tears because of all the emotions she went through. Nicholas tugged at my heart in a different way. How he handled his duties as a duke and what was expected showed a certain rigidity. His time with Felicity changed his outlook and was a lot of fun to watch. I recommend this book.

This was the first gothic romance book that I have read and it will not be my last. This story is about a young female scientist that is determined to find a way to bring a loved one back to life. Will she succeed? Will she find something more than what she was looking for? Read this book to find out!

The story was very interesting and entertaining, and it moved at a nice pace. The characters were also interesting and likable, and I thoroughly enjoyed the story. I'll be checking out more in this

Felicity Fields was an orphan but had been taken in by Margaret and Randall Grantham, the sixteenth Earl and Countess of Tetbery. Her studies of Alchemy was very important to her. She wanted to play Frankenstein and bring Margaret back. She was so tired of being alone. Nicholas Harding, Duke of Wycliffe, had missed Margaret's funeral. They played when young until she discovered Science. She was a very exacting person, had no use for society and she did not really get along with people.

THE DETERMINED DUCHESS by Erica Monroe is Book Two in The Gothic Brides Series. This is the story of Felicity Fields and Nicholas Harding, the Duke of Wycliffe. This is easily a standalone book.
Felicity has lost the person who had meant to most to her after the lost of her family. Now Felicity feel that she has no one and is lost but with her scientific mind she hopes to do something to get her back. Nicholas never could understand his Aunt's ward and how her mind works but she is left with now

This is the first gothic book I’ve read since childhood. The storyline kept my attention and provided characters that had depth and pluck enough about them, that I kept thinking about them long after I closed the book.

It will be a genre that I take on with more interest, as I plan to read the rest of this very engaging series. Lots of great passages;Four stars. Highly recommend.

This book is very different from what I normally read. It's very dark. Though the story is well written and the characters well described, I just couldn't connect with the heroine. I did, however, admire the hero and his patience. Anyone who likes gothic stories will probably enjoy this book very much. I was gifted a copy of the book without any obligations and voluntarily read and reviewed it.

Felicity is so lost and lonely with out her guardian that she tries to bring her back to life. I do like how Felicity and Nicholas friendship turns into something more, but the whole story about her trying to raise the dead is a little too much for me.

This is a slightly out of the ordinary gothic romance .
Felicity is the sort of woman who nowadays would be signed into a secure unit or at the very least undergoing psychiatric treatment. But she’s such an awesome character.
Nicholas has so much patience and love for her that he deals with it all himself , what a guy.
This was an interesting book and had me thoroughly hooked though I don’t know if I was just waiting to see if there was a zombie or if I wanted to see a HEA , I’d have bee

I thought the story was excellent, different and really interesting. I liked the two characters. And I was really happy to see a strong and unique heroine. I thought the whole ambience was good and well crafted.

I just found some of the historical accuracy was missing eg it would have been a scandal for them to stay together unmarried in what was the aunt’s house and then as the epilogue said in London. They started out with chaperones but they seemed to disappear not sure what happened to th

After the death of her beloved guardian Margaret, Miss Felicity Fields is left alone with an uncertain future. This blunt bluestocking has a secret, she’s determined to resurrect her guardian through the ancient art of alchemy. The last thing she needs is the return of Nicholas Harding, the Duke of Wycliffe and rightful owner of her home on the wild coast of Cornwall. When they were children, Nicholas never understood his aunt's brilliant but unemotional ward, or her many scientific studies. An ...more

A tale unlike the rest!
Erica Monroe has a winner in this amazing tale of unconditional love! Felicity Fields is grief stricken when the woman she’s loved as a mother dies. She’s not like the usual young woman interested in balls and ribbons. Instead she’s trying to figure out a way to bring her guardian back to life, grief has a way of altering our mind sometimes.

Nicholas Harding has always been intrigued by Felicity since they were children, and even more now that they are adults. He finds her

I received an advanced reader’s copy of this book.

Felicity is a interesting heroine who studies alchemy and is using her knowledge to attempt to bring back to life her deceased beloved guardian. She is very logical and is awkward around people. She struggles with her emotions and change but brave enough to face her fears.

Nicholas is kind and supportive even when he doesn’t really understand where Felicity is coming from. Though used to having his way, I liked that he did consider things from di

A very entertaining book.
I seem to have read many new publications lately where the heroine is on the autistic spectrum. Felicity unfortunately is also the proverbial 'mad scientist' and has an obsession with bringing someone back to life. Some of the things she does to create the process is just icky and not something I would normally associate with a Regency Miss. She simply appeared to be batty and I adored her for it as did Nicholas who had the patience of a saint.

This book is more of a 3.5 in my book but it was a nice quick read. I would have enjoyed if the story was longer and little more in-depth. The story was written fairly well I can tell the author did research and even had a nice section to explain certain discrepancies. I will likely read this again. I would also recommend this to others.

The Determined Duchess, the second book in Erica Monroe's Gothic Brides series, has a highly unusual and somewhat bizarre storyline. The heroine, Miss Felicity Fields, is determined to figure out the formula for Elixir of Life so she can bring back to life her dead guardian. Felicity, long a bluestocking, has knowledge of alchemy and has conducted numerous experiments over the years. She thinks differently, more mechanical, with few social skills. Nicholas Harding, Duke of Wycliffe, returns home ...more
