I loved this Victorian romance by Alec Stark. It has a dom/submissive theme to it that I really enjoyed. I loved the characters. Lord Hatton is such a manly man and into all things outdoors like riding and hunting with his friends. He also has a very dominant personality and being a lord he has the added duty of producing an heir. Percy is an invert. He prefers the arts and spending time alone. Three and a half stars.
This isn't quite a book about the two main characters, Hatton and Percy, falling in love. If that's what you're looking for, then it's best to ignore this book. These two are already quite in love with each other, and we don't get to read about just how they fall in love. Rather, His Lord and Master is about Hatton and Percy coming to terms with their feelings for each other, and about the progress of their sexual relationship.

I received an ARC edition of this book from the author.
Did I enjoy this book? Yes, but it wasn't quite the story I was expecting from the blurb. I was expecting a bit more to the "threat" toward Percy than the short scene that actually happened. There was really more of a concern over the expectations of society (along with the potential legal issues of two men together in that time period) that caused the tensions between Hatton and Percy.

Titillating with plenty of steam, I was torn between four stars and a lower rating because I really did not like the way Hatton, the dominant partner, treated sub Percy in company. Yes, he defended him from a visiting, privileged bully, but he also forced him to go against his own nature when it came to sharing his art. Dominate behind closed doors -- fine. Take away Percy's free will in everyday life -- that's not something I am comfortable with.

In my defense this book was for Book Riot's Read Harder. It covered the read in one setting and the cover you hate category. These covers make me cringe every time. I love romance books, no shame, but these covers give the genre a bad name:P Overal a fun read for my sick day (Saturdays are usually a wash for me thanks to meds). There were some annoying historical things that made me grit my teeth. But hey the sex was hot and the story was sweet. Nothing tax but nothing painfuly awful either.

Sexy characters, a hot, forbidden romance, a bit of BDSM, and Victorian England - what's not to like? Percy and Hatton have such good chemistry, even when they're in denial of what they want. It's a fast-paced, quick read, and even though some liberties were taken with the time period, it's an interesting and sexy tale with some great characters that a reader can't help but root for.
