OHKUBO Atsushi

Atsushi Ōkubo ( 大久保篤), also romanized as Atsushi Ohkubo, is a Japanese manga author and fantasy artist known for his work on the manga series Soul Eater, which has been adapted into an anime. Okubo worked as an assistant under Rando Ayamine, on the manga series Get Backers. He also created artwork for various cards for the Lord of Vermillion game.

Atsushi Ōkubo was not a model student and was more attracted to drawing than to learning. At the age of 20, after finishing studies at a manga school where he met Rando Ayamine, the author of Get Backers, he became Rando Ayamine's assistant for two years. Finally, he won a competition at Square Enix's Gangan magazine with his first manga series B.Ichi and it was published for four volumes. After the end of his last manga, he created Soul Eater, still for Square Enix's Gangan magazine, which brought him worldwide success.

I read this book via Kindle Unlimited.

In this volume, we meet a host of new characters as Company 8 begins to expand its members by introducing a science team. We meet the eccentric Viktor, a teenage genius who seems to be a bit of a double agent, potentially spying for The Joker on Shinra. We then follow Shinra, Arthur and Iris as they go and attempt to recruit an engineer named Vulcan. Vulcan hates the Fire Force and has turned down the efforts of a number of their leaders, based on a family grudge against Haijima. While the Company 8 soldiers are there attempting to convince him, Company 3's captain, Dr Giovanni arrives in a further attempt to get Vulcan on his side and when he's rejected, Shinra's Adolla Link tells him that Giovanni wants Vulcan dead. They then obvious have an epic battle that is made even more dramatic by the appearance of the Evangelist's soldiers, apparently working with Giovanni, and we are left on a cliffhanger when Shinra sees Sho for the first time since their childhood.

I flew through this volume, it was fast paced, interesting and I'm excited to see the implications this volume is going to have on the next ones in the series. I really liked Vulcan's character and how all he wanted was to help reintroduce animal life to the world, going as far as feeding stray cats and birds when he was struggling to put food on his own table. I was a bit upset he got double crossed by his "unbreakable family" after losing his father and grandfather to becoming infernal. I hope he joins Company 8 full time.

Company 8 needs a person who can create their gadgets but when they go to Vulcan (the engineer) home they are met with...resistance.

This is fun to watch Arthur, Shinra, and Iris go on a trip together. Seeming them gives a lot of good comedy bits to make this volume a ton of fun. On top of that Vulcan is a interesting character with a reason why he hates the fire force that makes sense. When the fighting begins it is Arthur who gets to show off why he's one of the best. With some of the coolest fight scenes so far. Shinra also gets time to shine.

This volume is action packed and really funny at points. I'm a bit confused on why people seem to not like this anime much. I think besides some silly fan service bra and panty shots, this is a really fun, well put together, character driven series. Helps the fights kickass too.

A 4 out of 5.

This volume contains chapters 43 - 60. The artwork is wonderful and easily conveys emotions and movement. Since I previously watched the anime, there have been no surprises so far.

The mysteries and secrets are still hiding the source of the evil and greed. The 8th, and now individuals from other groups, are starting to gather to figure out the truth behind Flame People.

Arthur continues to make me laugh! He is truly delusional about being a knight, but also says some of the most sincere dialog in the manga. A new character, Vulcan, is introduced. In the last chapter, Shinra's little brother shows up to confront Shinra. Volume 8 promises to have lots of drama and action.

(Read as part of Omnibus volume 3).

Vulcan is a great character. But this is such an annoying volume. I was hoping it would be better than the Anime but the only thing going good here is there is less pain reading instead of listening to Arthur going on and on. I don't get the whole Sister Iris causing such chaos when they first arrive at the forge. I mean after so many chapter there should be character development, but it feels like all the characters are back to Vol 1 chapter 1 personality (like this chapter was meant to happen earlier) all rude and illmanarard. It is just a side quest to fetch a new character and should have been a chapter or two and not a full volume. Oh well.

Got introduced to new character - Vulcan. Hopefully he becomes one of the 8th brigade. Apparently, more people work for the White Clad and Evangelist. Long awaited reunion awaits us in next volume. Can't wait!

The episodes of the anime adapted from this volume really cemented my love for Arthur. That boy is so deeply bizarre and I adore him.

This volume was very entertaining. I always enjoy seeing Arthur and Shinra together. They are both so funny. But I also love their fighting style.

The addition of the creepy scientist should make this story move a little quicker. I am a huge fan of Vulcan and can't wait to see what role he will play in this series.

4/5 Stars (%76/100)

Not as good as the 6th and 5th volume but it was still enjoyable. This volume is the start of the 6th arc which is related to a blacksmith named Vulcan. As a mythology geek, I can't help but mention that Vulcan is the Roman counterpart of Hephaestus, the famous Greek God who made all the weapons of the Olympians. It is not surprising that this Vulcan is also extremely skilled. Vulcan's ancestors are the ones who built the Amaterasu, the huge engine-like thing that powers everything. The 8th wants to recruit Vulcan but they meet resistance. Overall, it was a good volume and we learned more about the world thanks to Vulcan's appearance. There is also the case of "the key" which is a mystery right now.

Company 8 has a new member: the scientist assigned to them by Haijima. He's very suspicious and seems to know more than he lets on. Now we need one more person to make a complete team: the engineer. Captain Obi has his sights set on one in particular but Vulcan doesn't want anything to do with the Fire Force.

Not to mention, the white robes are back with a Fire Force team in tow. You also get a little surprise at the end to keep you in suspense.

This series has 34 volumes.

Summary:

Fire has always been a thing of nightmares for many. In this world, people are at risk of spontaneously combusting and turning into Infernals. An Infernal wants only one thing - to destroy. They are no longer considered human. That is where the Fire Force comes into play. It's their duty to protect the people.

While Company 8 isn't the only fire force trying to get to the truth, they are certainly the least corrupted. Yet, they will need allies to get to the bottom of this. Thus, they're about to reach out to an expert they desperately need to join the team. Naturally, things will go wrong.

Review:

Ohhh! Time for more characters to get introduced, thanks to Fire Force Vol. 7. I know there's already a really full cast at this point, but I instantly felt compelled to learn more about Vulcan – everything I could get.

Plus, this adventure split the team into a smaller group. This gave us a chance to get to know three of them (Arthur, Shinra, and Iris) a bit more – while seeing how they handle danger when isolated. It was a fun fight, to put it lightly.

I really like Vulcan's character. He's part of what the team has been missing, both in an archetype sense and in a role sense (they really do need an engineer!). I can't wait to see where the story goes, especially following that cliffhanger ending.

I liked this volume because it largely focused on the cast of Special Company 8 that I like the most, Arthur, Shinra, and Sister. Each character played a key role in the volume and showed that they still had the potential to be involved in future developments in the story. Additionally, interplay and displays of companionship seemed to have developed between this arc and the last. Friendship and trust moments were displayed further showing how well the characters have gotten along in their time at the company.

Vulcan, who Shinra and Arthur are tasked to recruit, is a compelling character. His mannerisms, youthfulness, proclivity to get in trouble, and positive never give up attitude are well in line with the personalities of our lead characters. Further his ability to cater to the Arthur’s specific needs during the major fight are terrific and something I didn’t expect. Hopefully joins the Special Company 8.

I also praise this volume for giving Arthur a fight of his own. I’m curious to see where it goes as it continues. One of the highlights was how he said he was fighting for his king, where king in this case seemed to be Shinra. Amazing.

There are twists in this volume which made my jaw drop.

Story 4,6/5
Emotionen 4,0/5

3.5 out of 4

This time Arthur, Shinra, and Iris go to try to recruit Vulcan as Company 8’s engineer. Unfortunately, Vulcan hates all of the fire force! Lots of backbiting and action happen!

Stuff I liked: the action was great! Great art! Some of the humor was funny! More intrigue!

Stuff I disliked: some of the humor was dumb and overdone! A few niggling matters... occasionally it’s hard for me to buy into certain plot points. But I’m still enjoying.

The villains are a little too powerful and knowledgeable for my taste, particularly this early on in the series. Shinra and Arthur unfortunately are too impulsive and lack strategic fighting skills, so they are outclassed against more experienced fighters that rely on something other than brute force.

This volume had a slow pace in the beginning but it picks up towards the middle. There are still plenty of silly and ridiculous hijinks throughout that made me laugh. (more specifically the drawings in certain scenarios). The battle in this volume hasn't quite finished yet so I am looking forward to the next volume for the continuance!
