Very handy book to refer back to. Tons of ideas for flowers and neat step by step explanations with photos for basic stitches.

First, let me say that the kindle version may need reformatting; my kindle wouldn't show any pictures from snapdragons on, a mere 30% in. I did ultimately manage to view most of the pictures on another device, but still not all.
Anyway... this is an accessible embroidery book for a beginner. There are very few stitches required and they are easy ones, with the possible exception of the French knots. Most of the flowers only require a few different thread colours which is great for people starting out. The project suggestions at the end are cute and achievable. I also appreciate just how much the author loves, or at least knows about, flowers.
However. However. While each pattern is probably recognisable as the specific flower which it represents (I.e. realistic, not stylised), most look very two dimensional. There's no depth to them which would have made sense if these were stylised but looks odd and a bit... I don't know - lacking finesse, perhaps? - in a realistic style. I'm not sure I was taken with enough of the designs to use them, or to really recommend them. I think I might have been more impressed as a beginner.

200 Embroidered Flowers is a great resource for any stitcher. Gula's put together an incredibly varied set of patterns that can be used in any context. You have your standard favourites like daffodils and sunflowers and roses, beautiful special flowers like chinese lantern, tropical plants, fruits and vegetables, and even cacti, succulents and mushrooms! There's such a huge range you're sure to find a suitable flower for whatever you're working on.
The book starts out with a brief series of photographic instructions on the stitches used to make the designs. My only criticism of this book is that the number of stitches used is quite limited, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Beginner embroiderers will find it easy to tackle any of the patterns because the stitches aren't complex, and advanced readers will find the flowers quick and easy to construct, which is always nice in such a slow art.
Each flower includes a short piece of text with details about the plant, a labelled pattern telling you what stitch to use on each area, and how many strands, a colour legend, and a photograph of the finished design. Each double page spread has a key to the stitch types at the bottom so you don't end up flipping back and forth through the book, which is a nice touch. With only two flowers to a page, the patterns are a good size and the lines are clear and easy to copy or trace.
I would be perfectly happy with just the individual designs, but the book finishes up with some projects too. These are, in my opinion, a bit old-fashioned (I'm a big old nerd and even I'm not going to embroidered flowers on my collar), but they are really useful as examples on how to combine the patterns into a more complex design. I particularly enjoy the cacti and succulents on a tote.
In short, this is a great resource for anyone wanting to embroider flowers of any kind and I would highly recommend it.

This is a collection of 200 tutorials, taught by hand embroidery expert, Kristen Gula. Through these lessons, Kristen will teach you how to stitch all of your favorite flowers, leaves, and foliage. You’ll learn the art of creating flowers like roses, buttercups, pansies, daisies, and daffodils, in addition to the more exotic blooms, all from a stitch library of less than ten stitches. These tutorials will walk you through the creation of these blossoms step by step, so you’ll never have a doubt as to what you should do next. In addition to the tutorials, there are also ten home decor and accessories projects included do that you can showcase the things you’ve learned, as well written as make beautiful handmade gifts for your family and friends. The pictures in this book are beautiful and really inspire you to want to work on these stitches. And, the step by step instructions are easy to follow. Even beginner embroiderers should find it fairly simple to accomplish these projects because of how straightforwardly they’re laid out. Each flower includes a short text with information about the plant, a carefully labeled pattern telling you which stitch to use in each area and how many strands of thread to use, a color legend, and a picture of the finished blossom so you can make sure that it turned out correctly. As an added convenience, there’s a stitch guide at the bottom of every set of 2 pages. This way you won’t have to flip back and forth between where you are in the instructions and the beginning, thus risking losing your place. I can already see how the skills learned in these tutorials will definitely be useful in my crafting and I’m excited about using these patterns and stitches. I hope you find it as easy to use and as valuable a resource as I have.

200 Embroidered Flowers is a lushly illustrated freehand surface embroidery tutorial book from first time author Kristen Gula, published by F+W Media and due out 5th June, 2018.
Aimed at beginners, she spends a fair bit of time introducing materials and includes a good basic compilation of stitches with photos and descriptions. Roughly 14% of the page content is devoted to thoroughly explaining the basics and techniques as well as material selection.
The majority of the content is devoted to the individual flowers, ~60%. The sections are arranged by seasons and further subdivided into flowers and foliage sections. Each of the individual entries is accompanied by a basic pattern line drawing, suggested colors and stitches, and a picture of the potential finished project.
It's a very systematic and organized book and fun to look at.
The individual flowers and plants are followed by suggested projects, including some surface embroidered clothing (jeans, blouse, hat), a nifty canvas tote, and some really appealing and colorful espadrilles.
The author's style is chatty and encouraging and very informal. I also really liked it that many of the individual flower entries included botanically accurate names for further research and reference photo hunting.
The book ends with a short author bio and artist statement, along with a no-nonsense basic index.
Very good, very basic, very appealing embroidery book. 144 pages, ebook and softbound formats.

What a beautiful book. I haven’t done much embroidery, but it does look so nice when it’s done right. This book is the ideal book for teaching you how to do that. I would say it’s aimed at intermediate level and above, although I’m sure a beginner would be able to pick it up and still be able to follow the instructions. It makes you want to embroider flowers onto everything just by looking through it! Wonderful!

I highly, highly recommend this book if you like embroidering flowers, or are looking to try something new. The flowers depicted are all ones I know or have heard of, and some I even own. The embroidered results look good, and realistic to the flower. I could easily embroider a table cloth to match the plant it's paired with, or add some flowers people will recognize to a project for variety. The designs are relatively simple, and a beginner should be able to attempt a few of them while learning. The layout is easy to follow, and sticks to a simple presentation of pattern, description and picture on one page, keeping the amount of flipping around to find things to a minimum. Definitely give this a look!

This book is all about enabling us to be able to begin embroidery and specifically, flowers of various sorts.
This book gives us a start up guide to stitches to use and how to go about making them as well as project ideas for incorporating our work into day to day life items.
In particular I liked the rainbow rose, Zinnia, Sunflower, Strawberry and Sea Holly embroidery the best and shall be having a go myself at trying to recreate them.
The book reads like a fact file you can dip in and out of at anytime with colourful images of flowers you can take inspiration from.

Absolutely beautiful book. For anyone that is looking to embroider flowers this is the book for you. The book is broken down into seasons, then wildflowers, desert flowers/plants, foliage, tropical flowers, houseplants and plants and foliage in the wild.
The book is well researched with the enormous amount and variety of patterns. The thread suggestions are easily available.
I would definitely recommend this book. Well Done!

When it comes to anything handcraftsy, I always ask for my grandmother's help. Even though in middle school, we learned all kinds of skills, I never felt like I was doing good enough. Since I like embroidery the most, I approached this book with high hopes - and I wasn't disappointed.
This is a good book for a beginner like me. The instructions and descriptions are great and I'm looking forward to trying the patterns out.

This is a wonderful book, beautifully illustrate with step by step instructions. There are many chapters divided by seasons or climatic regions, the flowers are not big but can be enlarged,for bigger projects - and there are a collection of projects that uses the flowers to make gifts, or just lift your favourite article of clothing. with.
I really like this book it easily stitched and there are all sort of flowers, leaves and cacti in the mix. Love it

200 Embroidered FLowers by Kristen Gula is a wonderful reference book for anyone who likes to embroider, likes flowers or both! The flower patterns are clear and easy to follow and the list of projects to embroider are delightful.
I feel that anyone, from a novice to a pro, can benefit from reading this book. I can't wait to use some of the patterns when I next decide to sew!

I came across this book on sewing. I had my Nanny who lover to embroidered. I would sit and watch her. When I got old she taught me to sew too! She liked to sew flowers on pillow cases. This book looked like this is going to have a lot of flowers for you to sew the ones you like. Find your material, needles and threads! I hope you will enjoy sewing! You won't regret it!

What a great resource! Great flowers. Patterns are super simple to draw yourself so it's not really necessary to trace each page.

Very large assortment of flower and plant patterns. Easy for beginners since there is not much shading or stitch variation but that makes for flat 2d finished embroidery pieces. One big issue I had with this book is the finished embroidery pictures. They are small and there is not enough contrast between the embroidery and the fabric background making it hard to see detail.

I took 18 embroidery books out of the library and this book is exactly what I was looking for. I think it would be perfect for beginners too. I loved the info about each flower.

This book offers intricate patterns for the experienced stitcher. The creations are lovely but appear to be time consuming. Great for those wanting some challenging needle work!

Quality is a bit sacrificed in this volume for quantity. Some of the patterns are not at all appealing or representative of their respective plants, but there are a few winners here.

Great book. Too bad it was missing one of my favourite flowers, carnations. Kristen book is a great follow up on her online embroidery course.

If you love stitching you will love this book. I have been incorporating a bit of stitching in my craft projects lately and this book is wonderful for doing a small pattern of paper or fabric. If I continue to do this I will have to purchase my own copy of this book as I got this from my library. A great resource and I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars!

This is such a good book. It is not only a step by step guide for the flowers but also how to embroider in general. Love this so much and will be buying a copy for myself (which is rare for a craft book)

Full of beautiful illustrations and easy to follow tutorials, Kristen Gula's 200 Embroidered Flowers is a very nice instruction book to assist you learning how to create new needlework designs from the basic embroidery stitches. It will help expand your knowledge and creative library.
