Shannon's first job was at the Coronado Public Library in San Diego where she worked during her last two years of high school and over the summers during college. Starting as a lowly Page, she shelved books and dreamed of creating her own books one day. After high school, she took a detour to Japan where she put her natural artistic abilities to work at her first graphic design job for the U.S. Navy's Exchange retail store.

Back in San Diego, Shannon attended San Diego State University, including one semester abroad in Paris, France. After graduating with a major in Graphic Design and a minor in French she moved to Hollywood and then San Francisco, CA to work as a Graphic Designer and Illustrator. Her various full-time positions included stints at S. F. Business Times Newspaper, Health Magazine and San Francisco Magazine.

Meanwhile Shannon was freelancing at her own company Small Dog Workshop and working with clients like American Girl, Coolibar, Tarina Tarantino and Ambiance San Francisco. In 1999 she finally bit the bullet and quit her job to devote herself to her freelance career.

Over the many years, there were many, many book ideas but nothing took off until Shannon created her Going To Guides series published by the independent publisher Orchard Hill Press. These guidebooks are written, designed and illustrated by Shannon with additional art and photos by talented Contributing Artists. After the launch of the Going To Guides books, Shannon opened an Etsy shop where she uses her design and illustration skills to create goodies made with the colorful, whimsical art in the books.
