I like the title and the incorporation of maps.
There are many picture books on theme "child takes a journey through power of imagination" and this was far from being a favorite. I think the main weakness was that Rose doesn't seem to have much personality, or to take any pleasure in her explorations. It's odd to me that someone with the imagination to create this fantasy world would have so little emotional reaction to it.

Determined to discover something new, unknown, or exotic for her class's Show-and-Tell, Rose sets out on a voyage of the imagination, her map-making skills standing her in good stead, as she plots a course through multiple fantastic landscapes. From her home to the beach, from the beach to the exosphere and back down to the ocean, across the ocean to Cat Island, and inland by train, all the way to the Last Stop, every leg of Rose's journey is laid out in a fantastical map. But when she returns home empty-handed, with no new discovery, she feels she has failed. Will she have nothing to share, at Show-and-Tell? Or will the journey itself prove worthy...?
Being completely unfamiliar with author/illustrator Deborah Marcero's name and work, I picked up My Heart Is a Compass with no expectations or preconceptions. How glad I am that we got it into work, as it is a true gem! The artwork itself is beautiful, with a lovely, subtle color palette and so many wonderful details, especially on the pages with Rose's maps. There's so much to look at, in these maps, so many delightful place names! The story is also delightful, emphasizing the idea that the journey is every bit as important as the destination, and that the act of creating, whether a story or a map, is also an act of discovery, resulting in just the sort of new, unknown and exotic thing that Rose longs to find. This is just a charming book, and I suspect that, had I encountered it first as a child, I would have enjoyed poring over the pages. Recommended to anyone looking for new children's stories about creating stories and art. For my part, I will definitely be looking for more of Deborah Marcero's work!

Come travel with Rose to discover something magical!
I read this book in Dutch, but just got to write my review in English so more people can know about this amazing and beautiful book.
In this book our girl Rose wants to discover something special, something wonderful so she has something AMAZING to show in class on Monday. I really loved that she wanted to have something amazing, she didn’t want to settle for something normal. We see her try to find something, try to find anything, and then she starts drawing and from that moment the story becomes a wonderful imaginative story about a girl following a very special compass, namely her heart. I loved all the places she drew/visited. From her hometown to places far far away. In space. On an island. By train.
I loved what she had to show the class, though I could understand the worries she had, would this be a good enough thing for her class? Would people like it? I knew the answer and wanted to just step in the story and whisper to her that everyone would love it. No worries!
The maps, the illustrations, the journey, it was all just so beautifully done and I love that all the art had a blue string holding them all together. It flowed between pages and illustrations and I love that this was done. The maps were just wonderful and I loved seeing all the imaginative names along with the real names for things. Special places got special names and it was just so sweet.
Be sure to also check the end pages both at the beginning and the end!
All in all, a very beautiful picture book that I would recommend to all!

Rose has to decide what she will bring to school for show and tell. She travels to different terrains in order to figure out what is special enough to discuss.
What Rose produces are beautiful maps with insightful names. I loved the illustrations and the message that creativity isn't a lost art. Rose uses her imgination and the classmates are impressed.
I picked this one up on a whim at the library.

A celebration of imagination, I loved how Rose goes on a journey that takes her to every location in her heart and despite not finding what she thinks she is looking for, her friends make her realize the journey was just as important as the search for something special.

A young girl on a quest to bring something interesting to her classroom's Show-and-Tell sets off on a journey of imagination (that is purposefully-mapped out which sets it apart from what might be deemed simple daydreaming) that takes her to different geographical regions that have the inventiveness of a young person's mind without really setting the book in a sense of defined place.

This book was so cute! I used it in our homeschool unit about “me on the map.” We had a hard time finding books about streets but when I found this one, I thought it would be a good pick. No i know it was PERFECT. The pictures, the in details maps, the story, all of it. I loved it.

“Rose longed to be an explorer, a pioneer, a trailblazer.” So when Rose* wants to find something completely new for show-and-tell, she sets off on an adventure by scooter, rocket, boat, train, and hot air balloon. Where she goes isn’t on any map anyone would find, because Rose draws the maps she is going to use: “Her imagination became the blueprint, with her heart a compass.”
Plot out time for this picture book–and have art supplies on hand if you are reading this with a young one. Rose’s maps are double-page spreads with all the whimsical details you’ll want to pore over. She draws a Road Map, then charts the Sky, then Ocean, before finally plotting Train Tracks—4 delectable maps. Notice how when she completes one journey empty-handed, she pulls out her paper and drawing utensil to draw the next leg of her adventure there on the spot, and how she has an object to inspire it (e.g. rocket, boat, train). She finds inspiration in her contexts: in her situation and the world about her. Her hearts draws her onward, and it will eventually draw her back home.
Her maps do not lead her to find anything to bring back to show or to tell—or so Rose thinks. But at the end of her tale, maps rolled up in her arms, her classmates are enthralled and congratulatory. Rose “had found something no one had ever seen or heard before.” And even better, her tale meant her classmates—and the reader—could experience the adventure as well. She becomes the explorer, pioneer, trailblazer she longed to be.
Rose inspires her teacher and classmates in the closing endpapers to draw their own maps…and you have to admire the variety in both the student body and their individual projects. One student is mapping at a micro-level, a cell; and I’m intrigued by where the “black hole” map will take them. I appreciate how this picture book ignores the false boundaries of the arts and sciences and leads with a heart for something new and unrestrained and an imagination to fuel its possibilities. Of course, looking at the opening endpapers, you can imagine where these students’ hearts are finding fuel for their imaginations. Rose’s book choice is clear.
Marcero’s My Heart is a Compass invites the reader into an entertaining and empowering adventure and leaves them with a healthy dose of creative energy.
Recommended for all the libraries (community, school, classroom, personal). I think girls will respond to seeing this heroine on the page; I appreciate, too, Rose’s skin tone and blue hair, as will many a young reader.

Saman kirjailijan Purkissa-teos (2021, Kumma, suom.

Zo mooi dus.

A little girl named Rose with blue hair in pigtails wants to be a trailblazer and explorer, and to find something new- to bring to show and tell at school.
She goes on "adventures" based on maps she drew. Fantasy, ocean, outer space in a space shuttle.
I didn't like all the maps, found them annoying, too busy, and distracting.
She didn't find anything new but instead brought her maps and described her adventures to her classmates and they loved it.
I think the themes are dreams and using your imagination.

Nifty story! When it started off with a Carl Sagan quote on the acknowledgments page, I knew I was in for a good ride.
It sells itself as a book about finding something for show-and-tell, but it's much more about creativity, imagination, and cartography. Rose has a talent for planning and drawing, and it turns out her classmates are way more interested in her storytelling abilities than whatever she didn't find to bring to class!

A little girl sets off to find the perfect thing to take to Show and Tell, but doesn't find anything no matter how far her journeys take her. When she returns to her class and tells the other students about her journey, it turns out that the journey itself was worth sharing. A cute story with cute maps in it. Lots of room for storytime discussion here. Did she actually take a journey, or was it all in her imagination?

This is a fantastic book for children in elementary school who are learning about maps. The main character, Rose, draws beautifully detailed maps of imaginary places, with labels, legends, and a compass. I could see this book being used by teachers to discuss maps, and being paired with a map-drawing activity.
The kids enjoyed reading this book and looking at all the map details. (Illustrator Deborah Marcero really did a fantastic job with the illustrations.)

This is a beautiful story about the power of imagination. Even when Rose thought she didn't find anything in her imaginary maps she created, her journey through different fictional worlds proved to be more than enough for show and tell. I would recommend this to students in grades K-2 when they feel stuck in a rut and have difficulty coming up with ideas for creative projects or difficulty developing confidence in their artistic abilities.

Rose longs for international, undersea, and intergalactic adventure. But what, really, can a child do? Rose uses her imagination to create maps and stories to go along with the maps. Marcero's illustrations feature hues of blues and orange as Rose (with brown skin and bluish hair) creates a Harold and the Purple Crayon type adventure (with maps that are often reminiscent of Peter Sis). Beautiful!

The art is charming, with lots to look at, but the story is a little confusing in that it is based on making maps, which the main character does BEFORE she goes to the places, which doesn't make sense to me. How do you chart a map of somewhere you've never been/seen? I love the imagination part of the story, but I didn't connect to the resolution in that the classmates were delighted by her maps, but the relationship was missing for me. I wish the character had been developed better as well.

Kiehtovasti kuvitettu kirja inspiroinee lapsia piirtämään omia karttojaan. Marcero on kyllä taitava kuvakirjojen tekijä.

Such a nice story. The author has encompassed map making with little girl looking for adventure and excitement. The journey will be far, and may take many maps, but she will search far and wide for something to amaze her classmates. And sometimes, that simple something is a story.

Lovely book about searching for just the right thing for show and tell - and she certainly adventures! Kids that love detailed illustrations will enjoy the maps of the locations explored. Focuses on the idea that maybe it isn't the things that mean something but the story of how you received them or how you adventured to get them.

I waited too long to read this book and it is one to crow about! A young girl searches, creates maps, all over the world (in her imagination) for the best show and tell. It's a "must-see" book for seeing the fabulous maps created by Deborah Marcero (and this little girl). And a "must-read" to discover the ending.
