Kitty Crowther developed a love for books in early childhood, due in part to the fact that she was born with a hearing defect that delayed her speaking until the age of four. Her dossier provides this comment on her work: "Kitty's style speaks for itself. A simple, pure line, a light stroke that creates movement, that traces emotion, that touches the heart. Characters are drawn with a few, clear pen strokes and are revealed subtly. 'I'm fascinated by movement, the line that trembles, that is agitated, hard, soft.' This young woman is not interested in reproducing reality. She is concerned much more with reinventing experience. As she searches for meaning and for accuracy, she does not allow herself to be distracted by the gaze of others. 'I am not a fan of drawing only after painstaking sketching. I prefer to draw a gesture or an attitude that I recall from memory. I trust my visual memory. I try to be true to myself. Everything that I put in my books comes from experiences that have touched me profoundly. I try to recreate this special energy as closely as possible because it is beautiful. Restoring things because they are pretty does not have meaning for me. I live what I draw."

Ein tolles und mal etwas anderes Buch zum Thema Tod!

Possibly the most French picture book of all time, in which Death befriends a little girl who, after a long illness, is the only one who has ever been happy to see her arrive. The little girl teaches Death all sorts of fun games, but after some time must move on to her next life. When she comes back as an angel, the two friends make their rounds together, and because there is now an angel in their midst, the people are no longer afraid to die. SO GOOD, right? This would be the perfect read for the right kid (or grownup) who may have questions/fears about death/the afterlife.

Döden är ett ämne som under en period knappt fanns i barnlitteratur. Där ämnet tidigare varit vanligt, och döden ibland setts som en befrielse, så försvann det under efterkrigstiden och återkom först senare (läs gärna stycket om döden i Barnbokens byggklossar om du vill gå djupare i detta).
Jag har tidigare recenserat Den långa resan som jag tycker är en utmärkt bok för ett första samtal med barnet om döden. Eftersom det handlar om djur så blir det inte lika otäckt. Men, när barnet är redo tycker jag det här är en utmärkt bok, där döden framställs som en snäll person som blir nedstämd över att alla blir rädda vid mötet.
Tills döden en dag möter en person som inte alls är rädd, som är glad att döden äntligen kommer. Det går givetvis att diskutera skildringen här: ska döden ses som något positivt? Får man längta efter döden? Det kan vara värt att poängtera här att det är sjukdom som är dödsorsaken och att texten inte på något sätt förhärligar att dö. Snarare framställs döden som en naturlig del av livet.
Bildspråket passar texten utmärkt, och hur det är illustrerat (exempelvis ramar på vissa illustrationer, och inte på andra) speglar hela tiden dödens sinnesstämning.
Jag ser det som en utmärkt bok att läsa för ett barn som en fortsättning på "Den långa resan" och som ett sätt att kunna närma sig ett ämne som vi har svårt att prata om. Dessutom är illustrationerna underbara. Inte så detaljrika, men tillräckligt för att barnet ska kunna styra tempot genom att peka på olika detaljer i bilderna.

Wow. At first I don't know what to say but I feel I have to say something about this book. Death is something nobody wants to talk about but it touches us. This book introduces us to death. She has a hard job and feels unappreciated until she meets someone who is happy to see her and welcomes her with open arms. I don't know if a book like this would help someone who is suffering from losing a loved one. I don't know if books about death should be on children's book shelves along with all the happy stories or how one introduces children to such books. But this book is beautiful. I asked my 14 year old daughter what she thought of this and "Papas Arme Sind Ein Boot". She said this one made her feel hopeful. When she read "Papas Arme Sind ein Boot" she got upset and cried. Maybe that is okay. I really like them both but I would like to know how to ( and if I should) introduce them to children.
