Illustrates and describes trains from all parts of America, focusing on engines and the changes brought about by the transition from steam locomotives to diesels in the 1940s and 1950s
I really loved this book! It is a sampler of America's railroads from coast to coast, in colour! The photos in this book, which were made from 1941 through 1959, are very valuable. It is unfortunate that the author died of a heart attack in October 1986, during the Reagan Era. Anyone who is an admirer of railroads will enjoy this book.
Don Ball, jr., broke the railfan press with this all-color compendium of trains across the US. Now considered a classic, it is a bold, bright, beautiful look at railroads and the terrain they traverse.
