This text provides students with a comprehensive review of the field of abnormal psychology. In the 8th edition, the authors systematically employ an interactional framework that incorporates personal variables and situational variables to examine how vulnerability and resilience influence the likelihood of mental disorders and recovery from them. The text explains and contrasts a variety of theoretical perspectives on each type of disorder.
Abnormal psychology concerns conditions known as mental disorders. In the first chapter, Sarason and Sarason review some historical background in diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders from ancient Greece to the modern era. In the following 2 chapters the authors discuss 7 different perspective in abnormal psychology, and the rest of the book is devoted to classification, epidemiology and treatment of mental disorders as defined by "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders" (DSM-IV-TR).
A well-written and very informative book, but unfortunately it has some irritating mistakes especially at parts the authors discuss about biological perspective.
