Deboarah Norris comes to the subject of mindfulness from a non-spiritual route, using science to help us understand why mindfulness works.

She then connects it to the work of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, who has studied flow states - and shows how mindfulness can not only help us cope with anxiety and worry, but can also be used to optimise our states of flow - the periods where we are subsumed by what we are doing, and life and time just "flows".

Can be a bit dry and academic in parts, but generally it's an easy and interesting read.

This book is required reading for my Mindfulness Meditation Teacher training program. It offers a solid scientific understanding of meditation. Dr Norris is one of my instructors - she’s amazing to study from, rich was both science and applicable experience!
