I read this to my precocious five-year-old, who was completely enchanted (would be a great read for older kids as well). She talked about the characters and situations long after we'd put it away, which is the greatest indication she was engaged. The writing is superb, the main character lovable and funny, and I found myself enjoying the book just as much as my daughter. My family moved out of the country when I was around Winicker’s age, and it was an incredibly hard transition. I couldn’t see how beautiful my new home was because I missed my old house and best friend so badly. I related to this story immensely- and I adore the cute grey hair modeled after her grandmother, the chance to overcome a preconceived notion and make friends with her neighbor, and all of the Parisian mentions throughout.
