I have been fortunate enough to hear some of Long John Nebel’s radio broadcasts from the 1950’s. Among his many guests, some of my favorites include the controversial (Otis T. Carr), the contentious (Lester Del Rey), the erudite (Ivan T. Sanderson) and the eccentric (Andy Sinatra, AKA The Mystic Barber). Great Listening, one and all! As Long John writes in the book’s Introduction, he loves talking to people, all kinds of people... and he certainly did. Of course, Long John’s guests came from all backgrounds and professions, but they are not the focus of this book.
Drawn from Long John’s 10,000 hours of radio interviews, this book is an informal overview of the strange and mysterious, the unexplained and the just-plain weird.
Long John has divided the book into several chapters, each chapter discussing one or more related topics, such as UFO’s, alien abductions, astral projection, “monsters”, psychics, healers and, in some cases, swindlers. Regarding the various events and individuals, LJ sprinkles the book with his favorite expression – which he used often on his radio show - “I don’t buy it”. (But I’m glad I did). I like the way the book is divided into the various chapters and topics, but I think what I like most about Long John (both in the book and on his show) was that he let everyone have their say, no matter how crazy they might seem. Long John was perhaps the “Ed Sullivan of the Supernatural”, giving everyone their 15 minutes of fame (or shame, some might say) and even inviting them back for more.
This book a friendly guide to all things not-of-this-earth or just plain off-the-wall. It makes you feel as if Long John has stopped by to tell you some of his many strange tales, with his wry and sometimes irreverent approach adding to the fun.

The book I read about spookshow king Bill Neff led me to this amusing little paperback. I never heard Nebel on the radio but I’m pretty sure if I’d ever lived anywhere his show was broadcast, my mother would’ve been a fan. I don’t think she ever missed an Art Bell broadcast if she had the choice.

Nebel tells tales of the unlikely in the voice of a carnie barker. His show covered 5 hours of darkest night in the 60s, midnight to dawn talk sessions with Dero-believers, saucerians, clairvoyants, conmen, and mad folk of all sorts. This book captures some of the wildest on- and off-air moments with a sense of humor. Although Nebel’s motto is “I don’t buy it,” he consistently teases with accounts of psychic feats that have no explanation, a trick that I suspect kept his audience coming back.

He would make a great character in a period weird tale.
