Meeting Lori Bakker today-a young woman with a bright, outgoing personality, you could hardly imagine her as a teenager living a life of flagrant sexual promiscuity and drug abuse. Nor would you picture her as having had five abortions before she was twenty-one. More Than I Could Ever Ask tugs at the heartstrings of women and men. Lori's story is one of forgiveness-finding forgiveness from God, learning to forgive the men who hurt her, and most of all, discovering inner peace. Her story also shows the power of love and faithfulness. After she was single and celibate for nearly nine years, Lori met and fell in love with a man she had known only by reputation-Jim Bakker. Today Lori and Jim-two broken lives brought together by God as one-have been restored and are busy helping restore others to spiritual and emotional wholeness.
I picked this book up cheap, after watching the Tammy Faye movie on Disney+. I did not know much about Jim Bakker or Tammy before that movie but, since then, I have looked it up and read about their past. I had Lori's book saved on my amazon list, just because I was curious about the next wife of Jim Bakker. This book is quite long but, one thing you will realize very fast is that it does not have to be that long. A lot of it was kind of not needed in the book, in my opinion.
Much of the book is talking about Lori meeting Jim, their fast courtship, and then their marriage. Lori would talk about being with Jim, then the next chapter would be a flash back to her earlier life, whether it be her childhood, first marriage, or her younger adult years. I will say here, that method of telling your story is not my favorite kind. I want to read about things in order; not in a flashback about a specific topic. For example, when talking about having children, Lori goes into her past and discusses her five abortions with her first husband. In the end, those abortions led to a medical complication that has left her unable to have her own children. That is fine, it happens. But, I would have preferred to read that during her time with that husband, not as a flashback while she is dating Jim. She also goes into graphic details about watching an abortion, and how it has affected her ever since. I am not completely sure that description is accurate, or was written to be more graphic for the purpose of the book. I have never seen an abortion so, I am not sure but, I feel like it had no place in this book. She could have stopped with her five abortion, and what it did to her body afterwards.
I also felt that this book was very slow moving, which is the reason for my three star review. It was well written, very informative but, it was one chapter about meeting Jim, then a chapter about their first kiss, then another one about him asking her to go "steady". I was flipping through pages going, get on with it. You do not need ten pages to talk about going on a date, and having your first kiss. It was too drug out. It felt like the intention was to make the book longer than it was.
Overall, three stars. I will not be keeping it; right in the donation pile.
I have read this book before about Lori Bakker. She did not have it easy with her early drug usage and abortions. She is still with Mr. Bakker and preaching God's word
