Awesome, entertaining, rhyming book that goes through the alphabet and gives a description of a vehicle for each letter. I really liked that the book included well-known vehicles (car, fire truck, airplane) as well as lesser known ones (iceboat, dog sled, zeppelin). Very creative.
I also like that the rhymes are set up kind of like riddles so that if you weren't looking at the picture, you could guess what was described. Great way to make the book more engaging.
The pictures are also amazing. Each picture has the letter hidden somewhere in it. And there are multiple other items in the picture that start with that letter (L- library, locksmith, lion, lamb, leopard, lamp, etc.). There is so much to look at and explore in this book. It's one of those books you can read again and again and still find new things in.
Great read, especially for kids learning the alphabet or learning letter sounds. The perfect balance of educational and entertaining.

Contemporary A B C picture book that dedicates a page to each letter along with accompanying verse and the most eye-stunning illustrations. Transportation has never been portrayed with such enthusiasm or detail. Animals from around the world ride, skate, vroom, sail, drag and float their way through the alphabet with non-stop vigor. I never even knew there were 26 modes of transport. Greene manages to transport us by water, air, through ice and snow, by track and wheels with ease and plane-loads of interest. Top marks.

Who knew there were so many different forms of transportation? Some of them are somewhat of a stretch and I doubt young children have any idea what some actually are. This is all in the spirit of reiterating those ABC's in a different way. What is truly inventive is for each letter there is also at least one alternative word using that letter so there is a second look at how that letter could be used. Some of this flows better than others. Having a young child say the words while an adult is reading this to them will also help to reiterate the use of that letter.

This book was great! It would be wonderful in a storytime, because the kids could "guess" what the vehicle is going to be at the end of the rhyme. (The "EMS" for "ambulance" is weird, though.)
And as a one-on-one, or small group read, in addition to the guessing game, there's also naming the animals (like a Kangaroo and a King Koala kayaking, and Queen Quail on the Quadbike) and finding the hidden-ish letter on each page (like the seat of the limo, or the submarine's periscope).

My 4yo loves this book! Each page is devoted to a letter of the alphabet and a mode of transportation that begins with that same letter. The writer uses a lot of repetition in letter sounds and the illustration even includes letter, but not always in an obvious way. My 5yo even had fun trying to find the letters that were hidden more than some others. Great book to introduce letters and their sounds.

I love finding fun and different alphabet books to read to Cassie. I like to expose her to lots of words that start with each letter. So it helps her know that the letters mean something. This book is so fun with all the different type of transportation. Some of them makes me giggle and learn about as well as Cassie. The illustrations are fun and colorful that are full of fun characters. I highly recommend you add this to your alphabet type books.

Cute and included a lot of different types of transportation that I never would have even thought of. My only issue is that they use and Ambulance for E (as EMS) which I think might confuse some little ones.

The alphabet is explored using rhyme once again in this book from A to Z with things that assist in transportation. The illustrations also challenge the reader to "I spy" other items on each page that contains the letter of each alphabet used. An example: "Foxes drive and ride on the Firetruck".

February 24, 2020Gowler Greene's ABC book is a great book to read aloud to help young kindergarteners learn the alphabet. The fact that it shows both the letter and words that start with that letter make it a fun read for students. I think I would use this book in my kindergarten classroom to help students learn all about the letters.

This book looks at different kinds of transportation to fit every letter of the alphabet. The illustrations are colorful and have the letter with the vehicle on each page. This book would be great to read aloud with kindergarteners to learn about the alphabet and think about what words and vehicles start with each letter.

Purest mediocrity. The rhymes ... well, they rhyme (somewhat), but they're not memorable:

The illustrations are a match for the text. Could be better, could be worse. My five-year-old son loves this book, though. From his perspective, you can't go wrong with cars, trucks, and trains.

Alphabet book with different vehicles. A couple a tiny bit of a stretch (I've never heard an ambulance called an EMS truck, for example), but the pictures are lively and colorful with a couple extras for each letter in the illustrations.

Some of these vehicles stretched a bit--a "narrowboat"? a "vehicle carrier"?--hmm? Otherwise, the illustrations were fun and for anyone looking for a new book about things that go or for an abc book, here you go! (No pun intended.)

Masterfully clever. Not only are there 26 modes of transportation beginning with each letter of the alphabet, if you look closely at the illustrations you'll see other little surprises alphabet-related.

Fairly standard ABC book, but one thing I like is how the letters are sometimes hidden in the illustration. I could see how parents and kids could have fun hunting for the letters while they're learning about them. Too bad it's not consistently applied. Some letters are not hidden at all.

My boys would have loved this book! Enjoyed this rhyming alphabet book that manages to find a vehicle for every letter! Fun illustrations. Be sure to look for that "letter" hidden in the illustrations as well. Fun for a preschool or transportation storytime or lapsit.

All alphabet books have to stretch a little bit this one did a pretty good job. “EMS truck,” “narrowboat,” “iceboat,” and “vehicle carrier” were a bit of a reach. But the illustrations are delightful and I love how they worked in the letters and other things that started with the letter.

Very cute! Like the little plays on the letters that aren't spelled out (the quail driving the quad bike is dressed like a queen, on the X page one of the animals has a xylophone on its back.)

I wish the author had put a key in the back. There were quite a few of the animals that stumped me and my husband.

Some of the words were a bit of a stretch but a decent rhyming story. Each page has the letter used in the illustration.
