5 Stars: Truth to Power

This memoir and journey to find solace first chapter is a nightmarish roller coaster ride; it is not an easy admission for anyone to talk about a parent attempting to murder their children. I would also add that is not easy for a child to understand the psychosis of a deranged mother and uncaring father, "Suffering Ends When Awakening Begins" by Robert Crown is a testament that many of us would prefer to keep secret and suffer in silence.

As for Robert, events of his life kept pushing him to edge, his parents' makeup is that of selfish people who shouldn't have children and being a bounce around from mother to father and back to his mother, he did what many kids do runaway. Where he ends up hungry and being taken in by pedophile drug dealers, something that Robert said struck a chord with me, that he was a target for pedophiles, Robert spoke the truth, kids that come from broken homes and trying to survive their childhood are prey for the generally agreed lowest human beings that walk amongst us. Robert is sharing his most profound pain from childhood for those who still suffer, there is a light, I agree with Robert, but sometimes the unforgiving rock bottom has to smack us on the side of the face to save ourselves. Fate can be cruel and even though being passed around by rapist scarred him I believe him losing his friends in a car crash crippled Robert with survivor's guilt which some of us carry until it kills us. I wasn't sure where Robert would be in the next chapter but what I find best about Robert is that his inner voice was his saving grace. A good man with a bad hand who starts his awakening.

In "Suffering Ends When Awakening Begins" you will find a lot of darkness, but Robert's journey is inspiring and well written, some details he does not get into too deeply, but this book strikes the right balance because you can get hung up on reading shocking things and not wanting to finish the book.

If you have read my blog, you know I always check out the description. So I dove into the description and then I tiptoed into this read, because I expected some dramatic, aching in my stomach, emotionally heart wrenching, type of reaction to this read, and that is exactly what I got.

Honestly, early on, I found myself strumming my fingers in a feeble attempt to dispel some of the anxiety I felt. Due to the horrifying occurrences, I downed my coffee and was gripping my Ipad until the very last page.

This read is it is not sugar coated. It's straightforward about the message of what was occurring, and any details left out, we can pretty much imagine. In the first chapter we see that a sickly young boy and his sisters are being manipulated and physically and emotionally harmed. Some of Robert's recollections, are amusing, like the section referencing Orwell's 1984, and when he tells readers, "I was able to do a "Neo" like in the Matrix."

What interested me the most in this book was the way Robert handles himself. I'm not saying readers will agree with all of the decisions, some early behaviors were self-sabotaging, but others were wise. The recognition that something was wrong and making his way to the door.... the sitting on the other side in the vehicle... both turned out to be life-preserving decisions.

This is a pretty quick read. We do see Robert struggle to fit in and witness his heartbreak. We see a transformation from him being betrayed to being loyal and from experiencing failure to achieving his own ambition. This story really speaks to the importance of putting thoughts in perspective, and to help others that have experienced trauma, Robert wrote this inspirational book.

I received this book from the author for an honest review.

This book was a true story about the author's life and all the hardships he endured while growing up. The first chapter had me captivated from the very first line as it starts off with his mom almost killing him as a child. The worst part was that she was trying to do it intentionally! I felt like I was reading a script from CSI where they examined a crime scene and kind of put together what happened before the victims became the victims. I honestly feel like I would be very messed up for the rest of my life if this happened to me. So kudos to the author for turning out ok after that.

I kept reading and thinking, "wow this guy can't catch a break". There were so many circumstances in his life that just didn't work out for him. The pros were that this author had me reading constantly. I was so intrigued and captivated by his life that I didn't want to put the book down. He has a good message at the end of the book that is worth reading it for.

The cons were that there were some small spelling mistakes. Not a crazy amount, but just enough to bug me. Luckily they were spread out so it was easy to pass off.

*Update: Apparently I had an earlier version of the book before the revisions so these little spelling mistakes have been corrected.*

Overall, I would recommend this book if you want an inspiring story about a guy that managed to turn his life around after hitting rock bottom.

Am inspired by this book.

It’s a moving account, especially at the first chapters of the sad reality behind boarder line personality behaviour. Taught me to be happy l have lived to tell my own story.
