He’s hunting me, and there’s nowhere to run.

East Berlin, 1963. I thought I understood the consequences of trying to flee to the West. Death. Imprisonment without trial. Instead I’m being hunted by the most dangerous man in the city, secret police officer Reinhardt Volker.

Now I’m his prize, no longer a traitorous factory girl but his elegant and pampered secretary. He wants

I just read this amazing book called THE LAST INNOCENT HOUR, which I've been trying to get all my friends to read. It's this amazing historical epic that takes place in Nazi Germany, which also has a love story in it - it's one of the darkest books I've ever read, b

The general plot of the book is that the heroine is set to escape to West Germany, but he foils her escape and keeps her for his own. Review contains spoilers and strong personal opinion.

It’s not me bashing the book, it’s me dwelling on the questionable moral of the story.

Fabulous writing. Excellent German language. The author did her research.

I was absolutely blown away by this book. Hale throws the readers into a suspenseful, historical, enemies-to-lovers (or is it enemies-to-lovers-to-enemies

➳A romance filled with historical aspects that will have you drawn to the history behind the romance of the two characters...

➳Personally, I am not the biggest fan of historical romance... I used to be, however, my love for it stopped after reading OUTLANDER and after watching the show as well, my love for it decided to diminish all together. But let me tell you something, my admiration for historical romance has returned again after reading this masterpiece of a novel. One really cannot fall i

Reinhardt Volker was known as der Mitternachtsjäger - the Midnight Hunter. As a high ranking Stasi officer, his job was to hunt down defectors and traitors. When he first saw
Updated on 02/17/18 after reading the whole book. My 1-star rating stands. Would that I could give it fewer stars.

This is a historical romance, set in 1963 East Berlin. Evony is captured by Reinhardt Volker, the "Midnight Hunter" of the title, when she, her father, and friends and coworkers try to escape to West Berlin through a tunnel they've dug under the wall. Her father disappears, her friend Ana is shot and killed by Volker, and Evony escapes but is soon picked up by Volker and taken to hi

Such a gentlemanly monster.

This is a book that is very polarized right now, and because of that I am a bit uncomfortable reviewing it. There are a lot of “If you like this book you are a Nazi lover” comments being thrown around like confetti. And once upon a time I may have been one of such people, if I’m being entirely honest with myself. It’s probably that confession which makes me the most uncomfortable, to be honest.

Wow! I was not expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did. Recommended to me, I was excited until I realized it wasn’t a typical historical nor your standard contemporary. I’ve never been a fan of anything set in the 1900’s. Until now.

Evony along with a group of other residents of East Berlin are thwarted when they try to escape. Expecting to be sent to a prison for traitors where she will be tortured and tormented, she is shaken, scared and unsure when her captor, Reinhardt Volker – the Mid

The only Nazis I want are dead ones.
I was in my 20s when the Berlin Wall came down. Like practically every other political science major in the 1980s, I read The Marx-Engels Reader. The Berlin Wall was in existence my entire life until it came down in 1989. I followed events about The Wall with mild interest since some of my family was from Germany and my grandfather was posted there directly after the end of World War II. I lived through the hard-line posturing by political leaders and witnessed the Olympics boycotts. A good frie ...more

Yeah no. With everything going on in the world, a book romanticizing a fucking Nazi is not what we need.

Shame on you all for promoting this trash as "dark romance".

There is nothing romantic about a Nazi hero. NOTHING.
Holy shit this was so good!!!!!
Thank you Fre06 Begum for the second great recommendation in a row!!! Seriously girl, maybe you should just pick out what I read from now on.

This book has given me something that I've given up on finding for awhile now: real suspense. Edge-of-my-seat suspense that had me second guessing everything. For the first time in a long ass time, I was worried the MC's weren't going to get a HEA even though I already knew they were.

The time setting and the location made me

"On these cold, unfriendly streets I found a flower, and I plucked it. I will have this one pleasure, this girl whose final surrender was that of a queen in battle."

I love historical romance especially ones that are about forbidden romances. I haven't read any books that are set in Germany when the Berlin wall was up, so this was a very interesting read to me. I wanted to see how Evony could fall in love with the 'enemy'. Secret police officer Reinhardt Volker is an anti-hero and the author did

Loved it!! I loved the characters and their story. It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. This was my first book by Brianna Hale and I'm very impressed. It certainly will not be my last!

My only tiny disappointment was that this story was said to be a dark romance, and as a dark romance reader, I did not really see any of that in this book. But despite that, the story was still really good, just don't go in expecting anything dark.
A beautiful and unique romance story, I loved it.
This quote from the book : I have no regrets, Liebling. They can't take my love for you, even if they take my life.

Nazis. This book is trying to convince you that there are Nazis who can be redeemed. Sorry. Nope.

I expected more because I actually do like Hale's writing. NOPE. That line, once crossed, puts you on my no-way-not-ever-reading-you-again-list.

Once again, for the people in the back. NAZIS ARE BAD. DO NOT MAKE A NAZI YOUR HERO. NAZIS. NO.
*Updated review*

Upon further reflection, I'm retracting my previous review. The male character does a great job of saying he wasn't a Nazi, and for whatever reason his "explanation" passed my initial reading inspection (and perhaps I was simply hoping that the book wasn't trying to romanticize him) but as some others have pointed out...he STILL would have worn the uniform of the Nazi. He WAS a Nazi. I'm issuing an apology on a review that didn't pass muster, that didn't do right by readers and o

Finally, I read Midnight Hunter too. WW1, WW2 and post-war era is not exactly period of time I usually read. It's depressing and even if the books are great 5 stars reads, they always leave a bitter taste. But with all the fuss about this book, I simply needed to know what the scandal is.

I shelved Midnight Hunter as a historical romance, so I rated it as a historical romance. I've read my fair share of historical romances in which heroes are often some kind of soldiers - Roman

I don't want what she knows, I want what she is. I want to own that look of fear and hatred in her eyes.
Oh man, Midnight Hunter started off so well!

Reinhardt Volker is an East German Stasi officer with a reputation of the worst kind in East Berlin; he's known as the Mitternachtsjager or the Midnight Hunter, a brutal and cunning man who can sniff out a traitor like no one else.

4.5 stars!

I... feel like I shouldn't like this book. But, I do.
It was very well-written, and I admire the author for trying something different.
Volker was a true anti-hero, and I just love villains.

There were some things that bothered me (towards the ending), that's why it's not 5 stars, but overall, I enjoyed this a lot.

Buddy-read with the amazing Karlypants!

I ended up enjoying this despite all odds. I don't usually do well with dark or taboo romances. And maybe the fact that I didn't feel this really fit well into either category had something to do with that. Despite the romance that has elicited much controversy, the story didn't have a dark feel, and since I have seen this type of pairing several times before, it didn't strike me as taboo.

This was well-written (even with the first-person present tense I dis

Adding to this review because I went back and read the entire book. I felt it was the right thing to do as I don't normally give many one-star reviews.

The book was well written and well edited. The author clearly has immense writing talent. Had the ending been different - say, the heroine had escaped and later explored her complicated feelings to the hero - this could have easily been a literary fiction novel.

I get why readers enjoyed this, especially if they don't read much historical fiction.

There's nothing Brianna Hale likes more than a large, stern alpha male with a super-protective and caring streak, and when she's not writing about them she can usually be found with a book, a cocktail, planning her next trip to a beautiful location or attending the theatre. She believes that pink and empowerment aren’t mutually exclusive, and everyday adventures are possible. Brianna lives in Lond ...more

“A silky, self-satisfied voice murmurs, “Guten Abend, Fräulein Daumler. You are out very late.” I recognize the aquiline nose and clean-shaven jaw of der Mitternachtsjäger and fear threads me like a needle.
