I was never fully invested in this one. The writing seemed fine, but the romance was not starting in a convincing way. The suspense was OK. This just may not be the sort of story for me, because it’s possible I could understand the character’s motivation with further background revelations. BUT I cannot forgive the heroine who didn’t want to go to the police when a child was poisoned (resulting in sickness, not death) and her first instinct was “no, they might start asking questions abou

For my first historical romance, The Pursuit of Mrs. Pennyworth gave me all I wanted and more. The thriller aspect was creepy and kept me guessing up to the reveal. The romance was sexy with just enough push and pull between the characters to stay interesting and fun. Mrs. Pennyworth was so relatable which I absolutely loved. She wasn't a damsel in distress and wasn't afraid to stand up for what she believed in. I love the descriptions of historical London and their way of life. I felt transport ...more

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The main characters, Charlotte and Elliot were very likeable, even if Elliot held some hard fast principles. They meet when Charlotte had a problem that she needs solving and asked Elliot in his role of an investigator to assist her. There was an attraction between Charlotte and Elliot but he isn’t sure he wants a wife and she is undecided about loses the freedom that she has now. The mystery held my interest until the end and I kept changing my mind on who was th ...more

I do love a Victorian suspense novel. It is not Jack the Ripper inspired but a parallel story in the same world. Elliott is a private investigator who is a manly guy, not flirtatious, and has a way of seeing things as right or wrong. No in between for Elliott. Charlotte is also a very nice person but has a secret. Seeing Elliott and Charlotte navigate their way through the suspense of the stalker and finding love in the interim was wonderful to read (even through the major bump at the end). The ...more

Charlotte Pennyworth just out of mourning for her husband and start to get back into society, someone is leaving her some very macabre gifts on her front steps. Scotland Yard has very little time for such things with Jack the Ripper running the streets of London and send her away with a recommendation to seek out Elliot Baker investigator.

Widowed Mrs Charlotte Pennyworth has been receiving strange gifts left on her doorstep. Some of them rather nasty. The police in Scotland Yard are extremely busy with the murders of several prostitutes in London, so advised her to hire an investigator.
Our heroine has a secret she doesn't want uncovered, but that can't have anything to do with what is happening. Can it???

Interesting little novel, a Victorian romance/mystery with a bit of sexy passion. The h is a lady’s companion, accused of theft by the son of her employer, in order to force her to be his mistress. She escapes and restarts her life in London, eventually marrying and then being widowed. She seeks the help of an investigator when she begins receiving threatening gifts on her doorstep. Mystery, romance, betrayal, intrigue all wrapped up in a fantastic read! Charlotte is such a great character, strong, smart, independent and ready to face the world... Elliot on the other hand has a huge flaw, he holds on to his past, one betrayal, with both hands. So tightly it makes him look at all pretty women the same, and that's what causes all his problems.
The mystery is built up fantastically, little by little, bit by bit, until it is solved, and this couple falls in love while they try

She employs ex-police inspector Elliott Baker to investigate who now works as a private investigator and solicitor. The case becomes complicated by their growing attachment to each other.
The mystery in this story was quite good though I did have my suspicions. I enjoyed the story and found the characters likeable and wait to see if there will be more

This took me a little longer to become engaged in the story than Callie’s books usually do. However, I did love the story. In fact, I always enjoy Callie Hutton’s books. I especially liked the mystery she wove, which kept me rather entertained. And the characters are winners. More of them, please!

And — I’m looking forward to more of her stories.

Received in exchange for honest review.

this was fun. We have two people in charlotte and Elliott trying to forget their pasts and move on. For Charlotte she is enjoying freedom and not feeling like she has to account herself to someone. She is also hoping her past has been left behind. She is generous with her time and sweet as well. Very prim and proper. When she comes out of mourning she starts to go to small social gatherings and suddenly she has someone leaving strange items at her door. So

I haven't read a historical romantic suspense book for a while, so I was really intrigued by the possibilities The Pursuit of Mrs. Pennyworth offered. A young widow being stalked by a jealous lover (or are they?) who falls for the PI she hires to help her? Yes, please!

Ms. Hutton did a decent job of providing us with red herrings here--I'll admit I did suspect the perpetrator earlyish on, but I was far from convinced of their guilt until the person

This is my first Callie Hutton book and I loved it! It had the right amount of romance and sex along with a very intriguing mystery. Kept me engaged through the whole book.

The Pursuit of Mrs. Pennyworth is a Victorian historical romance suspense novel. I don't read a lot of this genre, so I didn't know what to expect. The writing was pleasant, the characters as well. But it wasn't an addictive read. I wasn't really hooked by the story even if the plot was quite interesting. However, it was a good experience to change my reading habits!

Charlotte is a young widow with a past. Married only for a few weeks, her husband dies in a reckless carriage accident leaving her comfortably off and independent. Coming out of mourning, she suddenly finds herself receiving anonymous gifts that turn sinister. The police turn her away but recommend her to a private investigator.

A rather flat story. There is very little on who Charlotte is really other than a few sentences on her “meager beginnings” & being orphaned. But after her marriage a

I received an ARC of this wonderful new book and I encourage you to check out! I share a love of historical romance equally with mysteries. I love a good whodunit story that keeps me guessing throughout. Callie Hutton has written a captivating, couldn’t put it down, whodunit story with Mrs. Pennyworth and Mr. Baker. I really enjoyed Charlotte. She came from modest means, but that didn't stop her from making her way in the world. After getting married, her life seemed to be on the right track. Even though her husband died a month after the marriage, he had left her well suited. She was finally secure in her life, until some unwanted packages started arriving for her.
