Protagonista è la Germania... e poi Hitler, anche se il titolo può trarre in inganno. La storia del Reich dalla seconda metà dell'Ottocento fino alla disgrazia del nazismo è posta sotto analisi da Davidson in tutti i suoi aspetti politici, economici, culturali. Ne viene fuori un ritratto a tutto tondo della Germania guglielmina, potenza economica e faro di scienza, arte, cultura che uscirà sconfitta dalla prima guerra mondiale. I semi del male, o le "uova del drago" sono lì, nella catastrofe economica e sociale che seguirà al grande macello della guerra, nella durezza, intransigenza, miopia e testardaggine delle potenze vincitrici, in primo luogo della Francia, nei riguardi della repubblica democratica che tenterà di riaggiustare i cocci ereditati. Interessanti sono i ritratti dei politici di Weimar, tratteggiati dall'autore con simpatia e dovizia di particolari, come nel caso di Rathenau e Stresemann, che sembrano riempire di più la scena che il caporale austriaco.
