This was a well-written, tragic, short but brilliant story of a family of women doing what they can to keep their kingdom alive. It's a prequel story, and while the first book doesn't seem to have the same main characters, it definitely convinced me to put When Rains Fall on my TBR.

I read this first before When Rains Fall. It's a super quick read—it probably took me twenty minutes to finish. It's a quick story from Jamisen Malstrom's point of view. I really liked this choice.

As for whether or not it's helpful, the full novel is written in a way that whether you read the prequel, and regardless of when you read it, it won't tamper with the experience. Since I read the prequel first (as was probably intended), I had a better handle of the story's history and how certain cha

I first read this story as part of an anthology and it was by far one of the strongest stories. The character are well developed and the world they live in vivid. As far as genre, this is low fantasy. No elves or mystical monsters, but there is magic. As for connection to the story that follows, the best part about this prequel is that is is mostly self contained. You don't need to read this one to enjoy the other. However, the implications of the events in this story have big impacts on shaping ...more

This was just a short novel, a sort of prequel to the series the Lost Fields but it gave a real taste for the story to come and it made me want to read on. Jamieson the eldest of three sisters was willing to risk everything to keep her country safe, she was daring and very courageous but also loyal to a fault. She should have been chosen to be the queen after her father's death but instead her young sister was and now she was dying from a deadly illness and the country risked being overtaken by ...more

Absolutely loved this little prequel, Jamison is such a strong character and my heart physically hurt for her, the position she's been forced into and the responsibilities she had to shoulder.
Taylor does a fantastic job of setting the scene for the coming series, introducing you to a whole new world, it's courts and their characters- plus, I love a book with a map!
I really hope to see the Malstrom sisters again in the first book of the series When Rains Fall!

(Bit of a short review, but it is

I always want more with short stories! I will say since I read when Rains Fall I understood the characters and the storyline. This gave insight to the events that were referenced in the book so it was a nice to have some of the details.

Who will rule? Interesting beginning to a series. Kingdoms on the edge of war.

What a beautiful introduction to this new series! If I had one complaint it would be that I need more, and right now. I cannot wait to continue the Malstrom story in When Fain Falls
